DTPMP is normally delivered as salts, because the acid form has very limited solubility in water and tends to crystallize in concentrated aqueous solutions. It is a nitrogenous organic polyphosphonic acid. It shows very good inhibition of the precipitation of barium sulfate (BaSO4). At high alkali and high temperature (above 210 °C) environments DTPMPA has better scale and corrosion inhibition effect than other phosphonates.

DTPMPA can be used as scale and corrosion inhibitor in circulating cool water system and boiler water, especially in alkali circulating cool water without additional pH regulation. It can also be used in oilfield refill water, cool water and boiler water with high concentration of barium carbonate.
Abstract
A method for preparing a stabilised alkaline hydrogen peroxide containing bleaching bath is disclosed. Alkalimetal salts of diethylene triaminepentamethylenephosphonic acid (DTPMA) act as stabilising and bleach protecting agents. The DTPMA is added to the bath together with the hydrogen peroxide. Ready-to-use hydrogen peroxide bleaching bath solutions containing from 0,5% to 5% of DTPMA and having a pH within the 4-7 range are also described.
