E 142 is a green synthetic coal tar triarylmethane dye with the molecular formula C27H25N2O7S2Na.
As a food dye, it has E number E142.
E 142 can be used in mint sauce, desserts, gravy granules, sweets, ice creams, and tinned peas.
E 142 is prohibited as a food additive in Canada, United States, Japan, and Norway.
E 142 is approved for use as a food additive in the EU and Australia and New Zealand.

E 142 is a vital dye, meaning it can be used to stain living cells.
E 142 is used in ophthalmology, along with fluorescein and rose bengal, to diagnose various disorders of the eye's surface, dry eyes for example.

E 142 tend to be brightly coloured.
Many produce reactions in response to acids or bases.
As a result, they are ofter used as pH indicators.
E 142 is artificial organic compounds.
They are all based on the compound E 142 which has the chemical formula (C6H5)3CH.

E 142 is blue-green powder.
Soluble in cold water, easily soluble in hot water (green blue), soluble in ethanol (turquoise blue).
Meet strong sulfuric acid as orange, a green light amber after diluted.
Mainly used for wool, polyamide, silk dyeing.
Also used in leather, food, medicine and cosmetics of shading.

Uses
E 142 is a food coloring in drinks and candles.
Also used on living cells as protein stains for chemical and molecular analyses.

E 142 typical applications include beverages, confectionery, bakery, dairy fats and oil, meat, seafood, snacks, dry mixes and seasonings, fruit preparation, and convenient foods.

E 142is an anionic dye often used in textiles.
Research studies investigating the removal of E 142 by anodic oxidation and electrocoagulation have reported that these two methods may be useful for the removal of E 142 in wastewater treatment studies.

Preparation
(a)4-(Dichloro(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)methyl)-N,N-dimethylbenzenamine and Naphthalen-2-ol condensation, with hair smoke sulphonated sulfuric acid, and translated into sodium salt; (b) Bis (4 – (dimethylamino) phenyl) methanoland 3-Hydroxynaphthalene-2,7-disulfonic acid (or 7-Hydroxynaphthalene-1,3-disulfonic acid) condensation, product oxidation, and translated into sodium salt.
