EDTA TETRASODIUM

EDTA Tetrasodium, known as Tetrasodium EDTA or Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid Tetrasodium Salt in Turkish, is a strong chelating agent with high solubility in water, in which the four carboxylic acid protons of EDTA are neutralized by sodium ions. CAS No 64-02-8 is used for the anhydrate form, and the basic chemical formula is C₁₀H₁₂N₂Na₄O₈.
The main technical function of EDTA Tetrasodium is to bind polyvalent metal ions such as calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, manganese and zinc in coordination complexes. Thus, free metal ions can be limited from causing hardness, color change, precipitation, oxidation, loss of surfactant performance or other undesirable reactions in the formulation.
EDTA Tetrasodium is used as a chelating agent in cosmetics and personal care products, especially in shampoo, liquid soap, shower gel, facial cleansing product, conditioner and different water-based formulations. In European cosmetic ingredient sources, the name INCI is defined as TETRASODIUM EDTA and its main function is to support product stability by complexing metal ions.
EDTA Tetrasodium is also an important auxiliary raw material in the cleaning and detergent industry. By binding calcium and magnesium ions in hard water, it can support the performance of surfactant systems, reduce the formation of mineral residues, and help control metal ions in alkaline cleaners.
EDTA Tetrasodium's high water solubility makes it particularly practical in liquid formulations. A water solubility of about 500 g/L at 20 °C has been reported for the anhydrate tetrasodium EDTA in GESTIS data; commercial liquid products, on the other hand, can also be sold as ready-made solutions containing about 38–40% active ingredients.
EDTA Tetrasodium is more alkaline than EDTA's disodium salt. For example, in Nouryon's Dissolvine 100-S tetrasodium EDTA solution, which contains approximately 38% actives, the pH of 1% w/v aqueous dilution is given as 11.0–11.8. For this reason, it can be used especially in alkaline or near-neutral cleaning and personal care systems.
EDTA Tetrasodium should not be considered as an antimicrobial preservative alone. Its binding of metal ions may support the performance of some preservative systems and reduce metal-catalyzed degradation; however, the appropriate preservative system for microbiological preservation of the formulation should be designed separately.
An important technical distinction of EDTA Tetrasodium is between the anhydrate and hydrated forms. The anhydrate tetrasodium EDTA CAS 64-02-8 has a molecular weight of approximately 380.17 g/mol, while tetrasodium EDTA tetrahydrate CAS 13235-36-4 has a molecular weight of approximately 452.23 g/mol.
For this reason, no two products provide the same active EDTA equivalent in the same gram amount. It is important that a formulation or purchase specification clearly states the anhydrate, tetrahydrate, or commercial aqueous solution rather than just writing "Tetrasodium EDTA".
When purchasing EDTA Tetrasodium, assay, chelating capacity, hydrate form, pH, color, NTA content, heavy metal and trace metal impurities, physical form, and current COA information should be evaluated together according to the target application.

WHAT IS EDTA TETRASODIUM?

EDTA Tetrasodium is the tetrasodium salt of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid, i.e. EDTA. EDTA has four carboxylic acid groups in its molecule. In tetrasodium form, these four acidic protons have been replaced by sodium ions. Thus, the highly negatively charged ethylenediaminetetraacetate ion and four sodium counter-ions are formed. The molecular formula of the anhydrate tetrasodium EDTA is C₁₀H₁₂N₂Na₄O₈. Its molecular weight is approximately 380.17 g/mol, CAS No is 64-02-8, EC/EINECS No is 200-573-9, PubChem CID is 6144.
In the tetrahydrate form, the same chelating ion exists with four crystalline water molecules.
Tetrasodium EDTA tetrahydrate formula is C₁₀H₂₀N₂Na₄O₁₂, Molecular weight is about 452.23 g/mol, CAS No is 13235-36-4.
The basic type of EDTA chelating that the anhydrate and tetrahydrate forms provide in solution is the same.
However, the active substance equivalent of the commercial product is different on the basis of weight.
100 g of anhydrate product and 100 g of tetrahydrate product do not provide the same mole number of EDTA. This difference is important in formulation calculation.

Tetrasodium EDTA is in the strong chelating agent class.
Chelation refers to the simultaneous retention of a single metal ion by multiple donor atoms of a ligand.
EDTA has the ideal molecular geometry for this function. The molecule has two amine nitrogen and four carboxylate oxygen donor regions. Thus, it can form stable complex surrounding a metal ion from multiple points.
For this reason, EDTA is defined as a "hexadentate ligand".
Because the metal ion is held at more than one coordination point, the complex formed is generally more stable than simple single-bonded ligand complexes.
The metal binding strength of EDTA varies with the metal type and pH.
The tetrasodium form dissolves more easily, especially at higher pH, and can provide quick access to the chelating ion form.
For this reason, it is the common technical choice in cleaning, detergent, pulp & paper, textile, metal treatment and personal care formulations.
EDTA Tetrasodium is commercially available in solid powder/granule or aqueous solution form.
For example, Nouryon Dissolvine 100-S is a clear liquid tetrasodium EDTA solution with a minimum chelating assay of approximately 38.2%.
Powder grades may show anhydrate or hydrated structure.
Therefore, liquid and powder grades should not be used directly interchangeably with the same percentage.
EDTA Tetrasodium can bind calcium and magnesium ions, which make up water hardness.
It can also form strong complexes with transition metals such as iron and copper.
This property is particularly important in oxidation-sensitive formulations.
Even if iron or copper is present at trace levels, peroxide can accelerate the oxidation of oils, perfumes, dyes, and some actives.
EDTA can help formulation stability by reducing the free catalytic form of these metal ions. However, EDTA is not an antioxidant.
It does not work like a direct free radical trapping antioxidant.
It is the chelator that helps in reducing the metal-catalyzed oxidation pathway.

CHEMICAL STRUCTURE AND MOLECULAR PROPERTIES OF EDTA TETRASODIUM

In the basic skeleton of the EDTA molecule is the ethylene group that connects two nitrogen atoms.
Each nitrogen carries two acetate arms.
In the free EDTA form, these arms are -CH₂-COOH.
In tetrasodium form, four carboxylic acid groups -COO⁻ convert into Na⁺.
The simplified structure can be illustrated as follows: (NaOOC-CH₂)₂N-CH₂-CH₂-N(CH₂-COONa)₂ molecule carries a total of six potential donor atoms to bind metal.
There are two nitrogen donor sites. There are four carboxylate oxygen coordination centers.
Therefore, EDTA can keep the metal ion in a molecular lattice.
When a divalent or trivalent metal ion binds to EDTA, a 1:1 molar complex is mostly formed.
For example, one mole of EDTA can bind one mole of calcium ions.
The same general stoichiometry applies to magnesium, copper, zinc and many other metals.
However, complex stability constant is different for each metal.
This difference determines the selective chelation behavior.
The theoretical approximate sequestering values given by Nouryon for the commercial tetrasodium EDTA solution practically illustrate this difference.

For Calcium, approximately 40 mg metal/g active product equivalent is indicated.

About 65 mg/g for copper.

For ferric iron, about 60 mg/g.

For magnesium, about 25 mg/g.

For manganese, about 60 mg/g.

About 70 mg/g for zinc.

These values are the technical reference values of the specific product and are not the universal assay specification for all grades.
Also, the chelation pH range varies with the metal.
Calcium complexation in the Nouryon Dissolvine 100-S data is strong in the pH range of 5–14.
Copper can bind in the pH range of about 2–14.
The effective range for ferric iron is given as pH 1–10.
Magnesium may require a more alkaline pH.
This is because the protonation state of EDTA varies with pH.
At low pH, some of the carboxylate and nitrogen regions of the ligand are protonated.
This protonation can reduce the electron-donor capacity that can be used for metal bonding.
As the pH rises, EDTA becomes more deprotonated.
Tetrasodium EDTA therefore shows strong chelation performance in high pH formulations.

The main properties of EDTA Tetrasodium at the molecular level are:

Moving six coordination centers

Being a hexadentate ligand

Forming 1:1 complexes with metal ions

Calcium bind

Connect Magnesium

Iron binding

Copper Binding

Zinc bind

Binding to manganese

Helping to reduce metal-catalyzed oxidation

Checking water hardness

Helping to reduce mineral precipitation

Supporting formulation stability

These commercial liquid grade values are not universal physical properties of pure anhydrate Tetrasodium EDTA.
It is the specification of the ready-made aqueous solution.
When purchasing Powder EDTA Tetrasodium, assay, moisture and molecular-weight basis should be evaluated separately.
The same assay percentage of tetrahydrate grade may not mean the same active EDTA content as anhydrate grade.
Therefore, formulation conversion should be done on the basis of active chelating equivalent.

HOW DOES EDTA TETRASODIUM WORK AT THE MOLECULAR LEVEL?

At the core of EDTA Tetrasodium's working mechanism is metal chelation.
When introduced into water or formulation, tetrasodium is simply soluble.
Sodium ions are separated in solution.
The negatively charged regions of the EDTA ligand can coordinate with metal ions.
For example, if the calcium ion is free in the formulation, it approaches the EDTA ligand.
Carboxylate oxygen atoms and nitrogen donor atoms are arranged around the metal ion.
Stable EDTA-calcium complex is formed.
The metal ion can no longer react with the same ease as surfactant, soap, pigment or other formulation ingredients.
This mechanism is important in cleaning systems.
Calcium and magnesium can form anionic surfactant or insoluble salts with soap.
This may reduce cleaning power and foam performance.
When EDTA binds the metal ion, this unwanted precipitation can be reduced.
Iron and copper control is particularly important in cosmetic formulations.
These metals can catalyze oxidative reactions even at very low concentrations.

The oil phase can be oxidized.

Perfume can vary.

The color may be distorted.

Some actives can be broken down.

EDTA indirectly supports the oxidative stability of the formulation by reducing free metal ion activity.
EDTA can also be considered as a preservative booster.
Divalent metal ions play a role in the external structure of some microorganisms for stability.
Combined with metal sequestration preservative system, it can promote antimicrobial performance.
However, this effect does not mean that EDTA alone is a broad-spectrum preservative.
The final formulation requires a microbial challenge test.
In metal treatment applications, EDTA can retain metal ions on the surface or in solution in a soluble complex.
In textile and pulp & paper systems, undesirable reactions of iron, manganese and hardness ions can be controlled in this way.

The main functions of EDTA Tetrasodium at the formulation level are:

Binding water hardness

Complexing calcium

Complexing Magnesium

Reducing iron catalysis

Reducing copper catalysis

Reducing metal-induced discoloration

Reducing mineral precipitation

Helping to reduce soap scum formation

Supporting surfactant performance

Helping to protect peroxide systems from metal catalysis

Supporting the preservative system

Helping to maintain formulation clarity

Keeping metal ions complex in solution

Nouryon directly recommends tetrasodium EDTA for cleaning, detergents & soaps, disinfectants, personal care, metal treatment, oil industry, polymer processing, pulp & paper and textile industry.
The main reason for this wide application area is that the same metal-sequestration mechanism provides value in many different processes.

COSMETIC, SHAMPOO AND PERSONAL CARE APPLICATIONS OF EDTA TETRASODIUM

EDTA Tetrasodium is mainly used as a chelating agent in personal care formulations.
In European cosmetic sources, the main function of TETRASODIUM EDTA is defined as binding metal ions.

Here are the possible functions of EDTA Tetrasodium in cosmetic applications:

Binding calcium in hard water

Connecting Magnesium

Connecting Iron

Connecting Copper

Supporting shampoo clarity

Reducing metal-induced discoloration

Supporting perfume stability

Helping to reduce metal-catalyzed oxidation of oils

Supporting Preservative Performance

Helping to reduce mineral buildup

Helping to maintain surfactant performance

Supporting the shelf life of the formulation

In shampoo formulation, hard-water ions can affect surfactant behavior.
By binding these ions, EDTA Tetrasodium can help the product perform more consistently across different water qualities.
Controlling metal ions on the hair surface or in the production water is especially important in clarifying and cleansing systems.
However, it should not be assumed that EDTA will completely remove all mineral deposits from the hair strand in a single use.
Performance depends on pH, level of use and contact time.
Traces of iron or copper in creams and lotions can increase the rate of lipid oxidation.
The addition of chelator can help reduce the formation of discoloration and rancid odour by binding these metal ions.
The alkaline character of EDTA Tetrasodium can raise the formulation pH.
For this reason, Disodium EDTA may be more suitable for formulation in serum, conditioner or acidic cleanser system with low pH target.
The tetrasodium form can be particularly practical in more alkaline cleanser and soap systems.
However, the formulator should not choose only by looking at the type of salt.
Solubility, pH and target metal ions should be evaluated together.

USE OF EDTA TETRASODIUM IN CLEANING, DETERGENT AND INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES

The cleaning industry is one of the most important uses of EDTA Tetrasodium.

Hard water can have a negative effect on cleaning chemistry due to the calcium and magnesium it contains.

It can produce calcium insoluble calcium soap in soap systems.

This condition can be seen as gray-white mineral residue or soap scum.

EDTA can reduce this mechanism by complexing Tetrasodium calcium.

It can serve as a builder/sequestrant auxiliary in detergent systems.

It can support the surfactant to remain active.

It can reduce the formation of mineral residue on the surface.

Alkaline cleaners can keep metal ions in solution.

Iron and copper control is also important in bleaching systems.

These metals can accelerate hydrogen peroxide decomposition.

EDTA can contribute to peroxide stability by limiting metal catalysis.

However, the exact suitability of EDTA in the peroxide formulation should be verified against pH and process conditions.

Metal ion control in textile bleaching can help reduce the risk of fabric damage and uneven bleaching.

In pulp & paper processes, transition metal ions can affect peroxide bleaching efficiency.

EDTA or other chelators can be used to bind these ions.

In metal treatment processes, EDTA can keep metal ions in a soluble complex form.

This advantage also requires attention in environmental wastewater management.

EDTA-bound metals may not be easily removed by precipitation.

For this reason, although strong chelation is advantageous in terms of process performance, it should be evaluated separately in terms of wastewater treatment.

IS EDTA TETRASODIUM USED IN FOOD, COSMETICS AND PHARMACEUTICAL APPLICATIONS?

EDTA Tetrasodium is common chelating agent in cosmetic and personal care formulations.

The INCI name is TETRASODIUM EDTA.

Cosmetic function is mainly defined as chelating.

However, cosmetic suitability should be verified with the cosmetic documentation and impurity profile of the exact commercial grade.

There is significant name confusion in food applications.

E385, known as a food additive, is not Tetrasodium EDTA.

E385 Calcium Disodium EDTA.

Therefore, the phrase "EDTA is used as E385 in food" cannot be used directly for Tetrasodium EDTA.

The general industrial or cosmetic grade of Tetrasodium EDTA should not be assumed to be a food raw material.

If food application is considered, the legislation of the target country and the exact permitted EDTA salt should be checked.

In the pharmaceutical field, "edetate" or EDTA salts can be found in different applications.

However, Edetate Disodium, Calcium Disodium Edetate and Tetrasodium EDTA are different chemical salts.

The presence of an EDTA derivative in a pharmacopoeia or drug preparation does not mean that the technical grade of Tetrasodium EDTA is suitable for pharmaceutical use.

In pharmaceutical practice, exact pure identity, pharmacopeial status, purity, GMP and preparation requirements should be further verified.

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS OF EDTA TETRASODIUM

EDTA Tetrasodium has extensive use in industry in water-based and alkaline formulations where free metal ions must be controlled.

The following functions may be prominent in industrial EDTA Tetrasodium applications:

Water hardness control

Calcium sequestration

Magnesium sequestration

Iron sequestration

Copper sequestration

Manganese sequestration

Zinc complexation

Cleaning performance enhancement

Detergent formulation

Soap scum control

Metal precipitation control

Peroxide stabilization support

Textile processing

Pulp bleaching

Paper production

Metal treatment

Electroplating bath control

Polymer processing

Oilfield formulation

Personal care stabilization

Disinfectant formulation support

EDTA Tetrasodium dosage may not be determined solely on total water hardness.

Target metal concentration should be calculated.

Theoretically, EDTA-metal complexes are mostly formed with a 1:1 molar ratio.

Therefore, stoichiometric EDTA requirement can be calculated based on known metal concentration.

Excess chelator can be used in real formulation.

This can be due to the presence of multiple types of metals at the same time, unknown contamination, or process safety margin.

However, excessive use of EDTA does not always provide advantages.

The cost increases.

Wastewater metal mobility may be affected.

The formulation of ionic strength may vary.

Therefore, the optimum sequestering level should be determined by laboratory testing.

If commercial liquid EDTA grade of around 40% is used, active concentration should be taken into account.

For example, 10 kg of approximately 40% active solution does not provide 10 kg of pure EDTA.

It provides approximately 4 kg of active tetrasodium EDTA equivalent.

This conversion must be done when changing powder grade to liquid grade.

The following issues should be evaluated in the use of EDTA Tetrasodium in industrial systems:

Anhydrous or hydrate form

Active assay

Chelating value

Fe-sequestering capacity

Calcium sequestration

pH

Density

Colour / APHA

NTA content

Moisture

Water insolubles

Iron contamination

Heavy metals

Product form

Powder or liquid

Solubility

Crystallization temperature

Water hardness

Target metal ion concentration

Final formulation pH

WHAT PROBLEMS CAN EDTA TETRASODIUM HELP SOLVE?

EDTA Tetrasodium can help solve technical problems, especially those related to water hardness, mineral precipitation, metal-catalyzed oxidation, and formulation stability.

Reduced cleaning performance due to hard water

Calcium and magnesium can be bound by EDTA, helping the surfactant system to be less affected by hard water.

Mineral precipitation in liquid soap

Tetrasodium EDTA can reduce the formation of insoluble soap salt by complexing hardness ions.

Clouding of shampoo

Turbidity caused by metal ion or mineral precipitation can be reduced with EDTA.

However, not every turbidity problem is caused by metal.

Color change of cosmetic product over time

Iron and copper catalyzed oxidation can be limited by metal chelation.

Oxidative odor in oil-containing cream

EDTA can indirectly support the antioxidant system by binding metal catalysts.

Weak preservative system

Chelator may support preservative efficacy in some formulations.

However, it cannot be used as a substitute for preservatives.

White mineral residue on detergent surface

Calcium and magnesium sequestration can help reduce the risk of mineral residue.

Rapid degradation of the peroxide system

Complexation of trace iron and copper ions can reduce the decomposition rate.

Metal precipitation in a metal treatment bath

EDTA can keep metal ions in a soluble complex state.

Difficulty in removing metal in wastewater

In this case, adding more EDTA is not the solution.

On the contrary, strong EDTA complexes can complicate conventional precipitation treatment.

Therefore, the wastewater treatment plan should be taken into account in the selection of chelators.

Insufficient EDTA solubility in low pH formulation

Although tetrasodium EDTA provides high solubility, it can raise the formulation pH.

Disodium EDTA or other chelator may be more appropriate.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN USING EDTA TETRASODIUM

Hydrate form, active assay, formulation pH and metal-binding requirement are the basic technical parameters in the use of EDTA Tetrasodium.

The following issues should be considered when using EDTA Tetrasodium:

The CAS number must be verified.

The anhydrate or tetrahydrate form must be determined.

Molecular weight basis should be checked.

Assay should be checked.

The liquid or powder form must be verified.

Active chelator concentration should be calculated.

pH must be taken into account.

It should be noted that the tetrasodium form is alkaline.

The target metal type must be determined.

Metal concentration should be calculated.

Water hardness should be measured.

Chelating capacity should be checked.

Iron contamination should be evaluated.

NTA impurity should be checked if necessary.

Color/APHA should be checked.

Product solubility should be considered.

It should not be used instead of preservatives.

Wastewater impact should be evaluated.

It should not be assumed that it is E385 directly for food.

It should not be mixed with pharmaceutical EDTA salts.

TDS should be examined.

SDS should be examined.

The COA should be checked.

REACH/CLP information must be verified.

Although solid EDTA Tetrasodium has a high water solubility, dust exposure can occur during powder handling.
Powder inhalation and eye contact should be avoided.
Classifications related to severe eye injury and oral acute toxicity can be found in the European harmonized classification for tetrasodium EDTA.
For this reason, the risks of cosmetic final-use concentration and concentrated raw-material handling should be distinguished from each other.

ALTERNATIVES AND COMPARISON OF EDTA TETRASODIUM

When selecting an alternative to EDTA Tetrasodium, the label "chelating agent" alone should be considered.
pH range, biodegradability, metal selectivity, regulatory requirement and formulation compatibility should be evaluated together.

EDTA TETRASODIUM AND DISODIUM EDTA

Disodium EDTA is the partially neutralized salt of EDTA containing two sodium.
Tetrasodium EDTA contains four sodium.
Therefore the aqueous pH of the two products is markedly different.
Disodium EDTA can generally be preferred in more acidic/near-neutral formulations.
Tetrasodium EDTA shows a more alkaline character.
The active EDTA equivalent of the two products should be calculated according to molecular weight and hydrate status.
It should not be substituted directly by the same percentage.

EDTA TETRASODIUM AND EDTA ACID

EDTA Acid is the free form of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid.
CAS No is 60-00-4.
Its solubility in water is much lower than tetrasodium salt.
Tetrasodium EDTA is more practical in formulations that require high water solubility.
EDTA Acid can be evaluated in systems where in-situ neutralization can be performed with alkali during the process.
Molecular weight and neutralization requirement are different on the basis of the same weight.

EDTA TETRASODIUM AND CALCIUM DISODIUM EDTA

Calcium Disodium EDTA is different EDTA salt that contains calcium.
It is not the same as Tetrasodium EDTA.
Calcium Disodium EDTA food additive is known as E385.
E385 should not be used for tetrasodium EDTA.
The metal-binding behavior and regulatory status of the two products are different.
It should not be considered directly equivalent.

EDTA TETRASODIUM AND GLDA

GLDA is a family of biodegradable chelating agents based on Glutamic Acid Diacetate.
Similar to EDTA, it can be used for hardness and transition-metal control.
GLDA can be preferred according to environmental profile and biodegradability targets.
EDTA is the classic reference chelator with its extensive metal-binding experience and strong complex stability.
The metal binding constant and optimum pH range of the two products are not the same.
Dosage should be redetermined by laboratory tests.

EDTA TETRASODIUM AND MGDA

MGDA is an aminopolycarboxylate chelator based on Methylglycine Diacetate.
It is one of the modern EDTA alternatives in the cleaning sector, especially for hardness control.
The complex behavior of MGDA and EDTA for calcium, iron and other metals is different.
MGDA can be preferred in detergent systems with biodegradability targets.
However, one-to-one weight substitution is not recommended.

EDTA TETRASODIUM AND SODIUM CITRATE

Sodium Citrate can have metal binding and buffer functions.
However, its chelating strength is lower than EDTA for many metals.
The citric acid/citrate system can provide the advantage of easier biodegradability.
In light hardness-control systems, citrate may be sufficient.
EDTA may be more effective in formulations where strong trace-metal control is required.
The two products are not directly equivalent.

EDTA TETRASODIUM SAFETY INFORMATION

EDTA Tetrasodium is an alkaline aminopolycarboxylate salt with high water solubility.
The concentrated raw material has a different safety profile than the final cosmetic product usage level.
There are harmonized or registered classifications for Tetrasodium EDTA in European sources associated with severe eye damage and harmful oral exposure.
Solid product dust should be prevented from coming into contact with the eyes.
Unnecessary inhalation of dust should be limited.
Appropriate eye protection and chemical gloves should be used.
The high pH of liquid concentrated grade can increase the risk of eye and skin irritation.
For safe use, the current SDS of the exact commercial product should be taken as basis.
EDTA is also a chelator to consider from an environmental point of view.
It can affect the mobility of some heavy metals in wastewater because it forms strong metal complexes.
