General Information

It is a chemical in the form of a powder and clear hygroscopic liquid with a chemical formula of C9H11NaO3S.

Production and Reactions

Commercial production of cumene is produced in accordance with Friedel-Crafts alkylation in benzene with propylene. Cumene generates approximately 20% of global demand for benzene. It can be formed by the interaction and reaction of sodium sulphonates with cumene under suitable conditions.

Usage areas

Detergent
It is used as an intermediate phase solvent in detergent production at the rate of 0.5-5%, as a solvent and viscosity regulator in dishwasher detergents and liquid detergents.
It is used as a solvent and viscosity regulator.

Sodium cumene sulphonate is used in liquid detergent formulations as a solubilizer, coupling agent and
cloud point depressant. The hydrotropic or solubilizing property of sodium cumene sulphonate allows
materials to be incorporated in formulations that normally are incompatible. sodium cumene sulphonate is
also useful in lowering the cloud point or crystallization temperature of complex blends.
sodium cumene sulphonate contains no alcohol so it will not decrease the flash point of your formulation.
sodium cumene sulphonate is commonly used as a coupling agent for surfactants in phosphate and silicate
solutions. The coupling ability of sodium cumene sulphonate makes it possible to formulate detergents
containing high percentages of inorganic builders. Heavy duty cleaners, wax strippers and
complex dishwashing detergents can also be prepared without the use of organic solvents. It is
also used as a non-caking agent in spray dried detergents.

Used as a coupling agent to solubilize water insoluble, incompatible, and/or complex components of household and institutional cleaning products and personal care products; [Reference #1] Used in the textile processing and personal-domestic use industries, as a cleaning/washing agent, disinfectant, surface-active agent, and impregnating agent; [IUCLID] Permitted for use as an inert ingredient in non-food pesticide products; [EPA]

Hydrotropes are mild eye irritants; Significant absorption occurs after ingestion but not after skin application; Not skin sensitizers in animal testing; Acute toxicity in animals includes decreased activity, prostration, increased salivation, diarrhea, and congestion of the liver; Negative carcinogenic data in dermal exposure studies; No developmental toxicity to calcium xylene sulfonate in rats; [Reference #1] See "Sodium p-tolyl sulfonate."

Hand Dishwashing, Heavy Duty Cleaning, Laundry House, Light Duty Cleaning, Metalworking Cleaning , sodium cumene sulphonate is a solvent, coupling agent and anti-clouding agent used in heavy-duty cleaners, wax scrapers and dishwashing detergents, oilfield and metalworking applications.

ELTESOL ® SC 93 is a sodium cumene sulphonate powder. This product acts as a hydrotrope and may be used to increase the solubility of other compounds. In conjunction with non-ionic surfactants it will raise the cloud point of the solution allowing clear liquids to be obtained at higher temperatures, enabling additional control of the foaming characteristics and performance. It may also be used to reduce the viscosity of concentrated surfactants and formulations.
Category:
hydrotrope, surfactant agents
Recommendation for sodium cumene sulfonate usage levels up to:
     not for fragrance use.

Functions (INCI)
Hydrotrope: Increases the solubility of a substance that is slightly soluble in water.
