Emulan OP 25
Emulan OP 25 acts as a high-performance oil in water type of emulsifier.
Emulan OP 25 offers stabilization of emulsions, dispersions and latices against thermal, mechanical and chemical effects.
Emulan OP 25 can be used alone or in combination with anionic emulifiers such as Emulphor OPS 25 or with cationic emulsifiers in emulsion polymerization processes.
Emulan OP 25 used in emulsion polymerization processes for many different types of monomer such as acrylic esters, styrene and vinyl compounds (with 1-5% addition level).
Also, Emulan OP 25 used for emulsifying ester waxes and fatty acids (with 5-15% addition level) and disperse systems (with 0.5-5% addition level).

Uses of Emulan OP 25
Special emulsifier for the manufacture of emulsion polymers, especially for vinylacetate or acrylic homopolymers and copolymers.
On account of its chemical composition, EXOSEL OPS 25 combines the advantages of non-ionic and anionic emulsifiers, and can therefore be used as the sole emulsifier for emulsion polymerization.
Composition Alkyl aryl polyglycol ether sulphate, sodium salt
Specification Anionic surfactant 29 - 31 %
Sodium chlorid < 0.5 %
Sodium sulphate < 1.0 %
pH-value (5 %) 7.0 - 8.0
Solid content Min 29%

Chemical nature of Emulan OP 25
Emulan OP 25 types are nonionic surfactants.
Emulan OP 25 are made from a saturated iso-C13 alcohol.
Emulan OP 25 conform to the following structural formula.
RO(CH2CH2O)xH
R = iso-C13 H27
x = 3, 5, 6, 6.5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 15 or 20
The numeric code in the product name indicates the degree of ethoxylation.

Emulan OP 25 is a special mixture of Lutensol TO 3 and Lutensol TO 8
with an active content of ca. 90 % and a water content of ca. 10 %.
Emulan OP 25 is a mixture of Lutensol TO 5 and Lutensol TO 65.
Classification according to German chemicals legislation based on EU.
Directive 67/548/EEC
(8) = Harmful
(10) = Irritant

Emulan OP 25 types are manufactured by causing the iso-C13 oxo alcohol to react with ethylene oxide in stoichiometric proportions.
The ethoxylation temperature is kept as low as possible.
This, combined with the high purity of the feedstocks, ensures that high-performance products with low toxicity are obtained.

Properties of Emulan OP 25
Emulan OP 25 is cloudy liquids at 23 °C, which tend to form a sediment.
They become clear at 50 °C.
Emulan OP 25 is clear liquids at 23 °C.
Emulan OP 25 is soft, slightly yellowish pastes.

Applications of Emulan OP 25
The Emulan types can be used to prepare oil-in-water and water-in-oilemulsions.
Individual products can usually be classified as being oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsifiers, but it is often difficult to allocate combina-tions of different emulsifiers to either of these categories.
Emulan OP 25 is also difficultto categorize emulsions that deviate from the norm in that, for instance, they consist of more than two phases.
Some of the products in the Emulan range can also be used to dispersesolids such as waxes, polymers or rubber latex in water, and to stabilizeaqueous dispersions.
Dispersions of this type are employed as impregnat-ing resins, lubricants, polishes and protective coatings, and they can beused to dedust powders.
The choice of emulsifier plays a large part in determining the stability ofemulsions.
The nature of the hydrophilic and lipophilic components of theemulsifier molecule and the proportions of hydrophilic and lipophilicgroups determine their performance and the applications open to them.
Oil-in-water emulsions are usually obtained if the emulsifier molecule ispredominantly hydrophilic, and water-in-oil emulsions are obtained if theemulsifier molecule is predominantly hydrophobic

The ratio between the two parts of the molecule is expressed by thehydrophilic lipophilic balance (HLB).
The hydrophilic lipophilicbalance is a useful practical guide to the applications open to differentemulsifiers, but the final choice of emulsifier always depends on the resultsof practical tests in the laboratory.
The usual method is to use a combination of two or more emulsifiers, because this approach offers greater scope.
The Emulan types have theadvantage that they are compatible with each other, with cationic andanionic emulsifiers, and with many other substances.
Emulsions preparedwith emulsifiers from the Emulan range are largely insensitive to variationsin temperature.
They are largely unaffected by the presence of soil and, toa lesser extent, electrolytes.
As with all other nonionic emulsifiers, the performance of the Emulan typescan be affected by tannins, other substances of a phenolic nature, andcomplex acids such as phosphotungstic acid and its salts.
