General Manufacturing Information
Industry Processing Sectors
-Services

Ethyl proxitol and their esters are colourless, stable liquids of medium to high boiling point and mild odour.
They are often used in reformulation to compensate for the absence of aromatics for controlling viscosity, and for their ability to ‘couple’ aqueous and organic phases.
They mix with both water and other solvents, and combine powerful dissolving characteristics with medium to low volatility.

This gives them some key performance characteristics for solvent-based systems including:

-Miscibility with water
-Compatibility with a wide range of polar and non-polar solvents
-High solvent power
-Medium-Low volatility
-Coalescence

Ethyl proxitol has a slightly higher boiling point and slower evaporation rate than its Methyl PROXITOL counterpart.
Ethyl proxitol is completely water-soluble and is also compatible with many greases, oils and waxes.
This polar/nonpolar bi-functionality makes it an excellent coupling agent in aqueous-organic systems.
Their versatility means Ethyl proxitol have multiple industrial and consumer uses, the most common ones being paints and coatings, cleaners, inks, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
In coatings Ethyl proxitol provide good solvency for a wide variety of resins including acrylic, epoxies, polyesters, nitrocellulose and polyurethanes.
For cleaners they offer low toxicity, surface tension reduction, good coupling, wetting and penetration, and high solvency for polar and nonpolar materials.

Other significant applications are agricultural, cosmetic, ink, textile and adhesive products.
Ethyl proxitol can be used in combination with other glycol ethers or solvents to custom tailor properties to meet formulation requirements.
They also have regulatory advantages, including higher workplace exposure limits, than equivalent ethylene oxide-based glycol ethers.

Ethyl Proxitol by Shell Chemicals is a colorless, hygroscopic propylene glycol ether.
Used in the surface coatings industry and printing inks and to regulate flow, leveling and coalescence.
Possesses good volatility, viscosity and solvent power.
Ethyl Proxitol can be used as a coupling agent.
Used in adhesives.

Ethyl proxitol (also known as propylene glycol ether; Arcosolv PE; ethyl proxitol; and propylene glycol monoethyl ether) is a clear liquid that has a characteristic ether-like odour.
Ethyl proxitol has the formula C5H12O2 and it is miscible with water, is hygroscopic, and it also provides good solvency for a wide variety of substances, including resins, inks, and adhesives.
Ethyl proxitol is a member of the Propylene Glycol Ether family.
These Propylene glycol ethers are formed from the base catalysed reaction of propylene oxide with alcohols.

Ethyl proxitol has a specific gravity of 0.895 and a flash point of 40.5oC (Closed cup).
This low flash point means Ethoxy Propanol is regarded as Flammable and is classified as Dangerous goods class 3 and in pack group III.
Ethyl proxitol is transported by marine, rail, and road, primarily in bulk, but can also be transported as a packed product.
When being transported it should be in carbon steel or stainless steel vessels which should be tightly closed and properly vented.
The vessels should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area that is away from all ignition sources.

Ethyl proxitol  is used in a range of industrial, professional, and consumer applications as it provides good solvency  due to its’ bi-functional nature.
Ethyl proxitol is miscible with both polar and non-polar substances and is an effective solvent for a wide variety of resins, which include epoxies, acrylic, alkyds, polyesters, nitrocellulose, and polyurethanes.
Ethyl proxitol also provides low toxicity and this is another property which is valued by the users.

Ethyl proxitol  is employed mainly in the surface coating and printing industries as it can regulate the flow, levelling, and coalescence of both surface coatings (including water-based paints), and of flexographic printing inks.
Ethyl proxitol is also utilised as a chemical intermediate in the production of agro-chemicals and in the production of de-icing/anti-icing formulations.
Ethyl proxitol is also utilised in the cleaning industry where it provides cleaning formulations with surface tension reduction, a fast evaporation rate, and low toxicity.

New markets may open up for Ethyl proxitol as it can provide a solvent power, viscosity, and volatility that is similar to the ethylene oxide-based glycol ethers which are now facing some pressure from air and workplace regulations around the world.
Ethyl proxitol can provide higher workplace exposure limits and, at present, is not listed as a HAP (Hazardous Air Pollutant) by the US Federal Government Clean Air Act.
