ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid Disodium Salt, or Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid Disodium Salt in Turkish, is a powerful chelating agent used to bind polyvalent metal ions. In water-containing formulations, it binds metal ions such as iron, copper, calcium, magnesium, manganese and zinc in stable complexes, helping to reduce color change, oxidation, precipitation, hardness effect and formulation instability that these ions can cause.
Two forms are particularly important in the commercial use of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt. Anhydrous Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt has CAS No 139-33-3, molecular formula C₁₀H₁₄N₂Na₂O₈, and molecular weight of approximately 336.21 g/mol. The dihydrate form is CAS No 6381-92-6, molecular formula C₁₀H₁₄N₂Na₂O₈·2H₂O, and molecular weight approximately 372.24 g/mol.
A significant proportion of commercial products are offered in dihydrate form. Nouryon Dissolvine® NA2 is an example of this, and the product is defined as Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid Disodium Salt Dihydrate. A minimum purity of 99%, pH 4.0–5.0 in 1% aqueous solution, and a water solubility of approximately 100 g/L at 20 °C are reported for this commercial grade.
The main function of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is to chelate metal ions. The EDTA molecule can surround the metal ion through two amine nitrogen and four carboxylate sites, and bind at multiple points, forming stable metal-EDTA complex.
Because of this mechanism, Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt should not be considered as a "water softener" only. By reducing the chemical reactivity of metal ions, the product can help control oxidation reactions, discoloration, odor change, negative impact of surfactants from hard water, and some precipitation problems.
The theoretical chelating capacity for Nouryon Dissolvine® NA2 varies depending on the metal ion and pH. The manufacturer gives values of approximately 105 mg metal/g for calcium, 170 mg/g for copper, 150 mg/g for iron(III), 65 mg/g for magnesium, 145 mg/g for manganese, and 175 mg/g for zinc.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt can be used as a stabilizer and chelator in cosmetic and personal care formulations. BASF defines Edeta® BD as an organic chelator for cosmetic formulations, with the INCI name Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt.
It can be used in home care and industrial cleaning formulations to bind metal ions that cause water hardness, support detergent performance, and reduce metal-induced deposits.
In the chemical industry, it can be used for the controlled transport of metal ions in redox reactions, the control of water hardness in printing processes, and the inactivation of metal ions in various technical formulations.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt and Tetrasodium EDTA are not the same product. While the aqueous solution of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt may show a slightly acidic character, Tetrasodium EDTA is more alkaline. In Nouryon's EDTA product family, 1% solution of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate is approximately pH 4.5, while Tetrasodium EDTA products are approximately pH 11.5.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt should also not be confused with Calcium Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt. Calcium Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is a separate metal complex and separate chemical product. E385 in the European food additive system is Calcium Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt; it is not correct to define standard Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt as E385.
When purchasing ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt, anhydrous or dihydrate form, CAS number, assay, pH, water amount, solubility, color, NTA level, pharmacopoeia or cosmetic quality requirement, and TDS, SDS, and COA documents should be evaluated together.

WHAT IS ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT?

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid Disodium Salt is the salt of EDTA that contains two sodium ions.
Its common name is Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt. Its Turkish name is Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid Disodium Salt.
In pharmaceutical terminology, the name Edetate Disodium or Disodium Edetate may also be encountered.
The CAS number of the anhydrous form of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is 139-33-3. EC/EINECS No is 205-358-3.
The molecular formula of the anhydrous form is C₁₀H₁₄N₂Na₂O₈. Its molecular weight is approximately 336.21 g/mol.
The CAS number of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate is 6381-92-6.
The molecular formula of the dihydrate form is: C₁₀H₁₄N₂Na₂O₈·2H₂O.
Its molecular weight is approximately 372.24 g/mol.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is a disodium salt formed by converting two of the four carboxylic acid groups in the EDTA molecule into sodium salts.
Therefore, the structure still carries two acidic protons.
This is one of the main reasons why Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt shows a lower pH than Tetrasodium EDTA.
The main function of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is to chelate metal ions.
Chelating means that an organic molecule attaches to a metal ion through more than one binding point.
EDTA is a powerful ligand in this respect.
In molecule: Two amine nitrogen and four carboxylate oxygen groups can participate in coordination with metal ions.
For this reason, EDTA is classically described as having six binding points, i.e., a hexadentate chelator.
It can form highly stable complexes by surrounding the metal ion like a clamp.
This mechanism reduces the reaction of metal ions in the formulation in the free state.
For example, iron or copper ions can accelerate oxidation in some formulations.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt can bind these ions, helping to reduce their catalytic activity.
Calcium and magnesium ions are responsible for hard water behavior.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt can bind these ions so that the surfactant and other formulation ingredients are less affected by hard water.
The metal-binding ability of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt depends on the pH of the medium.
Different metal ions form stable complex at different pH ranges.
According to Nouryon Dissolvine NA2 data, the theoretical effective pH ranges are wide depending on the metal ion.

For example:

Calcium: pH 5–14

Copper: pH 2–14

Iron(III): pH 1–10

Magnesium: pH 6–11

Manganese: pH 3–13

Zinc: pH 2–13

metal bonding performance is specified in the ranges.
These values are theoretical references for the Nouryon Dissolvine NA2 product.
It should not be assumed that the same practical performance will be achieved with every formulation.

CHEMICAL STRUCTURE AND MOLECULAR PROPERTIES OF ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT

The basic structure of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt consists of four acetate groups attached to the ethylenediamine backbone.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt molecule has two nitrogen atoms and four carboxylic acid groups.
In ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt salt, two of these carboxylic acid groups are present as sodium salts.
The molecule's power to bind metal ions is due to the fact that many coordination regions can bind to the same metal ion.
When a metal ion is bound by the molecule Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt, a 1:1 molar complex is usually formed.
So an Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt molecule can chelate a metal ion.
This is generally the case even if the valence of the metal ion is two or three.
Therefore, the chelating capacity looks different per gram depending on the atomic weight of the metal.

Theoretical metal bonding values of Nouryon Dissolvine NA2:

Calcium: about 105 mg metal/g

Copper: about 170 mg metal/g

Iron(III): about 150 mg metal/g

Magnesium: about 65 mg metal/g

Manganese: about 145 mg metal/g

Zinc: about 175 mg metal/g

It is given as.

These values are approximate values calculated based on the 100% theoretical metal bonding capacity of the product and molecular stoichiometry.
Practical formulation performance can be affected by pH, metal ion competition, temperature, and the presence of other ligands.
One of the important properties of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is that it has different stability constants for different metal ions.
In particular, it can form highly stable complexes with iron, copper and some heavy metal ions.
Therefore, in cosmetic or chemical systems where even very small amounts of metal ions impair product stability, Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium can be purely effective.
It can also bind hardness ions such as calcium and magnesium.
However, in intensive cleaning systems with very high water hardness, the required amount of EDTA should be determined by formulation calculation.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium does not physically "destroy" the metal ion at the mere molecular level.
It keeps the metal ion in a soluble and less reactive complex.
This distinction is important.
For example, when iron binds with EDTA, it does not move away from the system; its chemical reactivity and precipitation behavior change.

The main properties of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt at the molecular level are:

Multi-point metal clamping structure

Hexadentate chelating character

Mostly 1:1 complexing with metal ions

Ability to bind various metal ions over a wide pH range

Ability to form soluble metal complexes in water

Able to help reduce iron and copper oxidation

Ability to control calcium and magnesium hardness

Supporting formulation stability

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt HOW DOES IT WORK AT THE MOLECULAR LEVEL?

The basic working mechanism of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is to chelate metal ions.
Water and formulation raw materials can contain metal ions even in very small amounts.

These are in particular:

Iron

Copper

Calcium

Magnesium

Manganese

Zinc

There may be ions such as.

Free metal ions can cause various problems in formulation.
Iron and copper ions can accelerate oxidation reactions.
These reactions can lead to the degradation of oils, perfumes, colorants, or active ingredients.
As a result, the product may darken in color, change odor, or reduce effectiveness.
When ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium surrounds the pure metal ion with coordination bonds, the metal's ability to react with other components decreases.
Therefore, Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is not directly the classic antioxidant but can help slow down metal-induced oxidation.
In cleaning systems, calcium and magnesium ions can reduce the performance of surfactants or form insoluble salts.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt helps reduce the hard water effect by binding these ions.

This is particularly the case:

In systems containing soap

In anionic surfactants

cleaners working under hard water

is important.

In cosmetic formulations, metal ions can impair color and odor stability.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt can support the storage stability of the formulation by binding these ions.
It can also provide indirect support in protective systems.
Some microorganisms require trace metal ions to grow.
Furthermore, the binding of metal ions can improve the overall formulation environment of the preservative system.
However, Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium is not purely protective and should not be used alone instead of a microbiological protection system.

The main functions of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt at the formulation level are:

Chelating metal ions

Helping to control water hardness

Reducing metal-induced oxidation

Supporting color stability

Supporting fragrance stability

Reducing the risk of precipitation

Supporting surfactant performance

Indirectly contribute to protective system performance

Limiting metal-catalyzed degradation

IN WHICH SECTORS IS ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT USED?

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt can be used as a chelator and stabilizer in many water-based formulations.

Main areas of use:

Cosmetics and personal care products

Shampoos

Shower gels

Liquid soaps

Facial cleansers

Creams

Lotions

Serums

Hair care products

Makeup products

Home care products

Hard surface cleaners

Hand dishwashing products

Laundry products

Industrial cleaners

Laboratory and analytical applications

For Nouryon Dissolvine NA2, the use of stabilizer in the detergent industry, metal carrier in redox systems in the chemical industry, preparation stabilizer in cosmetics and hardness control/stabilizer in the printing industry is clearly indicated.

COSMETIC AND PERSONAL CARE APPLICATIONS OF Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is one of the most widely used chelators in cosmetic formulations.
Ethylenediamine offers tetraacetic acid disodium salt as an organic chelator for direct cosmetic formulations.
In cosmetic products, trace metal ions can lead to many unwanted reactions.
Iron and copper ions can accelerate the oxidation of fats.

This situation:

Bad smell

Color change

Active ingredient degradation

Change of perfume profile

It can contribute to problems such as.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt can improve formulation stability by binding these metal ions.
In shampoo and cleansing products, it can bind hard water ions, supporting the surfactant performance of the formulation.
It can help reduce insoluble residues that can be formed by calcium and magnesium ions in soap-based products.
It can reduce the undesirable effects of metal ions on emulsion and active ingredients in creams and lotions.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt can also be included in the formulation to support the preservative system.
However, this function should not be confused with the "protective" function.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is not the main preservative against microorganisms.
If a protective system is required, appropriate protective materials should be used separately.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt level to be used in cosmetic formulation:

Water Quality

Metal ion charge

formulation pH

Product Type

Other raw materials

and target stability

should be determined through.

CLEANING, WATER HARDNESS & INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS OF ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT

One of the primary functions of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt in cleaning systems is to bind hardness ions such as calcium and magnesium.

These ions, present in hard water, can reduce the effectiveness of certain surfactants.

In particular, soap-like anionic substances can form salts that are insoluble with calcium and magnesium.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt helps reduce these effects by keeping metal ions in a soluble complex.

As a result:

The cleaning performance can be maintained.

The formation of mineral residues on the surface can be reduced.

Formulation clarity can be improved.

The effect of surfactants on hard water can be reduced.

Nouryon Dissolvine NA2 is used as a stabilizer in the detergent industry.

In the printing industry, it can be used for hardness control and stabilization.

In the chemical industry, it can be used for transporting and controlling metal ions in redox systems.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is not a strong acid that quickly dissolves high amounts of existing mineral deposits under all conditions.

It binds dissolved metal ions through chelation.

If the dense layer of scale or minerals needs to be removed, the appropriate cleaning system with acid, surfactant and chelator together may be required.

The effect of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt in the cleaning system depends on the pH.

In particular, the calcium and magnesium binding performance may be stronger in certain pH ranges.

Therefore, formulation pH should be considered in the selection of chelator.

IS ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT USED IN FOOD, COSMETIC AND PHARMACEUTICAL APPLICATIONS?

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is a widely used chelator in cosmetics and personal care products.

The INCI name is Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt.

The European Commission's CosIng database is one of the sources of information used to evaluate cosmetic ingredient names and functions. However, the presence of an INCI name in CosIng does not in itself mean that a particular use is legally approved; the final assessment should be made through the Cosmetics Regulation.

BASF Edeta® BD is positioned as Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt directly for cosmetic formulations.

In the pharmaceutical field, there are pharmacopoeia and medical use registries under the name Edetate Disodium.

There is an official pharmacopoeia reference for Edetate Disodium in USP-NF.

PubChem also identifies anhydrous Edetate Disodium as a polyvalent chelator and records historical/clinical uses.

However, this does not mean that standard technical or cosmetic grade Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is automatically suitable for pharmaceutical use.

In pharmaceutical application:

USP/NF

Ph. Eur.

GMP

Impurity profile

Endotoxin or microbiological requirements

and manufacturer quality certificates

It should also be evaluated.

An important distinction must be made in food application.

Standard Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is not E385.

E385 is Calcium Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt.

Calcium Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is a metal-EDTA complex with a separate chemical structure and a separate CAS number.
Therefore, the statement "Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium pure food additive is E385" is incorrect.
If food or food contact application is considered, the exact chemical form and the legislation of the target country should be verified separately.

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS OF ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is evaluated in industry as a chelator, metal ion control agent, and formulation stabilizer.

Its main technical functions are:

Binding calcium ions

Binding magnesium ions

Binding iron ions

Binding copper ions

Binding metal ions such as manganese and zinc

Checking water hardness

Reducing metal-catalyzed oxidation

Helping to prevent precipitation

Supporting formulation clarity

Supporting the hard water performance of surfactants

Stabilizing cosmetic formulations

Controlling metal ions in printing and chemical processes

The following parameters should be evaluated together in the Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt formulation:

Anhydrous or dihydrate form

CAS number

Purity

pH

Water solubility

Metal ion type

Total amount of metal ions

Water hardness

Formulation pH

Temperature

Presence of other chelators

Surfactant system

Electrolyte level

Protective system

Oxidation-sensitive components

TDS

SDS

COA

The amount of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt should not be selected only on an overall percentage.
Processes with high metal ion loads may require more chelators.
In cosmetic formulations, much lower levels may be sufficient.
The correct level of use should be determined through the formulation and metal ion charge.

WHAT PROBLEMS CAN ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT HELP SOLVE?

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt may be particularly useful in cases where metal ions adversely affect formulation performance.

The product changes color over time

If trace metal ions, such as iron or copper, catalyze oxidation, Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt can support color stability by binding these ions.

Cosmetic product develops bad odor over time

If metal-catalyzed oxidation is part of the problem, Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt can help.

Cleaner loses performance in hard water

Binding calcium and magnesium ions can help maintain surfactant performance.

Lime-like residue occurs in soap-based formulation

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt can help bind hardness ions, reducing the formation of insoluble soap salts.

Shampoo doesn't work well enough in hard water

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium can promote the cleaning performance of the formulation by reducing the effect of salt hardness ions.

Metal-induced precipitation occurs in aqueous formulation

Chelating metal ions can reduce the risk of precipitation.

The protective system remains at the limit

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium can support the overall performance of the preservative system by binding trace metal ions alone, but it is not a substitute for the preservative.

Water hardness creates problems in the printing system

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium can be used for the control of salt hardness ions.

In the formulation, the iron ion accelerates the redox reaction uncontrollably

Free metal ion concentration can be controlled by chelation.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt has difficulty dissolving

The formulation pH, water temperature, and the form of EDTA used should be checked. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt has higher water solubility than free EDTA acid, but does not exhibit the same solubility and pH behavior as Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt.

Not every stability problem is caused by metal ions.

Therefore, before adding Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt, the cause of the problem should be determined by formulation testing.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN USING ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT

When using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt, it should first be verified whether the product is anhydrous or dihydrate.

The following points should be checked during use:

The CAS number must be verified.

The anhydrous and dihydrate form should be separated.

Purity must be checked.

pH should be checked.

Water solubility should be considered.

Bulk density should be checked if necessary.

NTA content must be validated if required.

The type of metal ion to be used should be evaluated.

The formulation pH should be taken into account.

Water hardness should be measured.

The required chelating capacity must be calculated.

Compatibility with other electrolytes should be evaluated.

Compatibility with the protective system should be tested.

Pharmacopoeia compliance for pharmaceutical use must be verified.

The suitability of the exact grade should be checked for cosmetic use.

In food application, Calcium Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid should not be confused with disodium salt.

TDS should be examined.

SDS should be examined.

Party results must be verified via COA.

The dissolution of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt depends on pH and temperature.
For Nouryon Dissolvine NA2, a resolution of approximately 100 g/L at 20 °C and approximately 135 g/L at 40 °C is reported.
Therefore, if a highly concentrated stock solution is to be prepared, temperature and target concentration should be considered.
The metal-binding strength of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is affected by ambient pH.
For example, magnesium may require a higher pH for binding, while iron(III) and copper can also bind strongly at lower pH values.
For this reason, not only the amount of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt but also the formulation pH should be optimized.

INITIAL FORMULATION APPROACHES FOR ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT

The following examples are initial approaches prepared to show how Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt can be evaluated during formulation development. These are not validated commercial recipes.
The actual level of use should be determined by water hardness, metal ion load, formulation pH, and target stability performance.

The test water is first prepared separately; in a comparison series, the water hardness of all samples is kept equal (e.g. 300 mg/L CaCO₃ equivalent). If different hardnesses are to be examined, separate series should be set up at levels of 100, 300 and 500 mg/L CaCO₃ equivalent. The water body is included in the formulation; the dirt model and test surface are not product components.

Application approach:

EDTA-free control formulation is prepared.

Different levels of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt are compared.

The same amount of hard water is used.

Clarity is observed.

Foam or surface active performance is measured if required.

Cleaning test is performed on the standard surface.

After rinsing, the mineral residue is evaluated.

The lowest adequate Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt level is determined.

ALTERNATIVES AND COMPARISON OF ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT

When choosing the ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt alternative, not only the metal binding power; pH, solubility, biodegradation, cost and the metal ion profile of the application should be evaluated together.

ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT AND TETRASODIUM EDTA

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is the more completely neutralized form of EDTA that carries four sodium ions.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt shows a lower pH.
1% solution of Nouryon Dissolvine Na2 product has a pH of approximately 4.5, while Tetrasodium EDTA products have a pH of approximately 11.5.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt generally provides higher solubility and more alkaline character in water.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt, on the other hand, may be more suitable in slightly acidic or near-neutral formulations.
When two products are replaced one-to-one with the same weight, the formulation pH and the amount of active EDTA may change.
Therefore, direct substitution should not be made.

ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT AND EDTA ACID

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt acid is CAS No 60-00-4.
Its molecular formula is C₁₀H₁₆N₂O₈ and its molecular weight is approximately 292.24 g/mol.
Free Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt acid shows lower solubility in water than Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt.
The salt form of Disodium provides ease of use in water-based formulations.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt acid provides a lower pH and may require neutralization with the base within the formulation.
The two products should not be used at the same weight.

ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT AND CALCIUM ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT

Calcium Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is a separate chemical in which the calcium ion is pre-complexed with EDTA.
Ethylenediamine is not the same product as tetraacetic acid disodium salt.
Calcium Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is known as E385 in food legislation.
Standard Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is not E385.
The metal binding and biological behavior of Calcium Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt is different from Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt.
Therefore, the two chemicals should never be used interchangeably in food or medical practice.

ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT AND DTPA

Ethylenediamine is a higher functioning aminopolycarboxylate chelator belonging to the tetraacetic acid disodium salt family.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt carries four acetate groups and two amine nitrogen, while DTPA has more coordination sites.
DTPA can form very strong complexes with some metal ions.
It can be advantageous for metal control, especially in paper, textiles, and oxidative bleaching systems.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt, on the other hand, can be used more widely in cosmetics, cleaning, and multi-purpose formulations.
Depending on the application, the two chelators can be alternatives to each other, but direct weight substitution should not be made.

ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRAACETIC ACID DISODIUM SALT AND GLDA/MGDA

GLDA and MGDA are newer generation aminocarboxylate chelators.
Nouryon positions GLDA and MGDA products as alternatives to EDTA in terms of rapid biodegradation and environmental profile.
GLDA and MGDA can be used especially in home care and industrial cleaning formulations.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt, on the other hand, is still very common due to its strong metal-binding capacity and long history of use.
If the requirement for an environmental profile or Ecolabel is important, GLDA or MGDA can be considered as an alternative.
However, one-to-one substitution should not be performed because the metal selectivity, pH range, and required dosage are different.

Nouryon Dissolvine gives a minimum assay of 99% and a pH of 4.0–5.0 for NA2 dihydrate.
High-purity products from the same manufacturer, such as Dissolvine Na2-P and Na2-S, are offered with a low NTA level.
Specific quality information is also provided in the Nouryon product catalogue that meets USP/FCC/EP and related legacy EU food purity testing requirements for Na2-P.
For this reason, general industrial grade should not be considered the same as high purity or grade that meets pharmacopoeia requirements.
BASF Trilon BD is another commercial example of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt with a minimum concentration of 89% and a pH of about 4.5.
These differences indicate that the exact grade, COA and TDS information must be checked at the time of purchase.
