Ethylhexoic Acid is one of the synonyms used for 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid (2-EHA). It is called 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid in Turkish. It is an eight-carbon, branched organic acid with a single carboxylic acid function. It has CAS No 149-57-5, EC/EINECS No 205-743-6, molecular formula C₈H₁₆O₂ and molecular weight approximately 144.21 g/mol.
The primary industrial function of the product is not to be an end-ready additive alone; it is to be a raw material in the production of metal 2-ethylhexanoate salts, synthetic esters, specialty resin additives, and various chemical intermediates. Metal salts can function as desiccants in oxidative curing coatings. Its different esters can be evaluated in synthetic lubricant and plasticizer systems. The properties of these products are not the same as those of free 2-ethylhexanoic acid.
Manufacturers such as Eastman, Perstorp, and OXEA offer 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid as a high-purity industrial fluid. Perstorp and OXEA sample specifications have a minimum purity of 99.5%, a maximum of 0.10% water, and a maximum color values of 10 Hazen. Eastman's typical technical data report a boiling point of about 223 °C, a relative density of 0.908 around 20 °C, and a viscosity of about 7 cP at 25 °C. These values depend on the manufacturer and the conditions of analysis.
The water solubility of 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid is limited. Values of approximately 1.4–2.5 g/L can be encountered in PubChem and other technical sources; therefore, it should not be assumed that it mixes with water in all proportions. As a result of neutralization with bases, carboxylate salts are obtained and the dispersion/dissolution behavior of the system in water may change.
The product requires particular attention in terms of occupational health and safety. The current hazard classification may include concerns about skin irritation and reproductive/developmental toxicity. Therefore, the handling of the concentrated product should be based on technically controlled systems, appropriate personal protection, exposure assessment and the current SDS of the purchased grade.
When purchasing Ethylhexoic Acid, CAS identity, actual purity, water, color, acid value, odor, density, suitability for ester/metal salt production and manufacturer TDS, SDS and COA documents should be examined together.
WHAT IS ETHYLHEXOIC ACID?
2-Ethylhexanoic Acid is a monocarboxylic acid that carries the ethyl branch at the 2-position of hexanoic acid. The fact that the ethyl group is attached to the carbon atom that comes after the carboxyl carbon causes the molecule to behave differently from straight-chain octanoic acid.
The name Ethylhexoic Acid appears directly as the 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid equivalent name in chemical sources. However, the commercial contract should use the entire chemical name and CAS number instead of the ambiguous equivalent name. 2-Ethylhexanol, 2-Ethylhexyl Acetate and other C8 derivatives are not the same substance as this acid.
Ethylhexoic Acid is a saturated carboxylic acid. The carboxylic acid group can donate protons; it can form salts with alkaline hydroxides, amines, or suitable metal bases. It can esterify with alcohols under appropriate process conditions. These reactions are important from the point of view of industrial chemistry, but process conditions and reaction safety require separate engineering consideration.

The names "metal octoate" in industrial trade language can be chemically misleading: many commercial metal octate desiccants actually contain metal salts of 2-ethylhexanoate. The exact identification must be determined along with the metal type, active metal ratio, counterion, and solvent content.
CHEMICAL STRUCTURE AND MOLECULAR PROPERTIES OF ETHYLHEXOIC ACID
The 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid molecule has a polar –COOH group at one end and a branched C7 hydrocarbon skeleton at the remaining end. This dual structure allows interaction with both polar surfaces and organic phases.
The carboxyl group can lose the –COOH proton to form –COO⁻ carboxylate. Metal cations can show coordination or ionic interaction with carboxylate oxygens. Metal 2-ethylhexanoates differ in solubility, viscosity, catalytic performance, and storage stability according to the type of metal.
The branched structure of the molecule creates different packing and physical property than octanoic acid, which is a linear C8 fatty acid. Therefore, alternatives based solely on the same carbon number should not be considered equivalent.
2-EHA exhibits poor organic acid behavior; the qualification "weak" does not mean that it is safe for skin or reproductive toxicity. The rate of neutralization and heat release depends on the type and concentration of the base used.
Major molecular qualities:
Carrying a single carboxylic acid group
Showing eight-carbon and branched structure
Forming 2-ethylhexanoate salts with bases
To be able to form esters with alcohols
Showing high compatibility with organic phases
Limited dissolution in water
To be able to interact with metal oxides and hydroxides under suitable conditions
Used as a building block in the production of coatings and lubricant additives

HOW DOES ETHYLHEXOIC ACID WORK AT THE MOLECULAR LEVEL?
The basic reaction center of 2-EHA is the carboxylic acid group. This group reacts with metal ions to form salts, opening the door to the chemistry of "metal 2-ethylhexanoate". For example, certain metal carboxylates can be a component of catalytic desiccant packages in the oxidative curing of alkyd paints and varnishes.
The catalytic effect belongs to the metal salt. Free 2-EHA does not exert the same effect directly as a cobalt or manganese desiccant. The mechanism of catalysis depends on the amount of active metal, the ligand medium, and the chemistry of the resin curing with oxygen.
Esters formed with alcohols, on the other hand, change the polarity of the acid group and can exhibit different viscosity, volatility, low-temperature performance, or plasticizer behavior. Therefore, 2-EHA can be a starting raw material in synthetic ester production.
Partial or complete neutralization of the acid in an aqueous system changes the ratio of free acid to carboxylate salt. Thus, pH, appearance, and phase distribution can change. Precipitation or complex formation can also be seen in metal ion-containing environments. The theoretical occurrence of neutralization does not automatically mean that the final product is stable.
IN WHICH SECTORS IS ETHYLHEXOIC ACID USED?
Production of paints, inks, varnishes and coatings dryers; synthetic esters and lubricant additives; polymer and plasticizer intermediates; PVC stabilizer chemistry; automotive refrigerant additives; chemical catalyst and metal soap production; industrial metal processing and some special solvent extraction systems are the main areas of application. Each of these uses may refer to the use of specific derivatives or special processes. Free acid is not used directly as a final additive in all applications.
PAINT, VARNISH AND METAL DESICCANT APPLICATIONS OF ETHYLHEXOIC ACID
Manufacturers indicate that 2-EHA is used to produce carboxylate salts of cobalt, manganese and other metals. These metal salts can act as desiccant in the oxidative curing of alkyd resins. In desiccant production, the type of metal, the percentage of metal by mass, the amount of free acid and the carrier solvent determine the technical performance. The presence of 2-EHA in a certain amount in the resin alone does not prove that the drying rate will increase. Excess free acid odor may adversely affect compatibility or storage behavior.
SYNTHETIC ESTER, LUBRICANT AND PLASTICIZER APPLICATIONS OF ETHYLHEXOIC ACID
2-EHA can be esterified with different alcohols and used in the production of special synthetic esters. The properties of the ester depend not only on the acid chain but also on the molecular size, branching and functionality of the alcohol used. Viscosity, oxidation stability, low temperature flux and elastomer compatibility in synthetic lubricant; migration, mechanical properties and legislation should be evaluated in plasticizer application. Free acid and ester should not be seen as the same toxicological or regulatory profile.
REFRIGERANT, PVC AND POLYURETHANE APPLICATIONS OF ETHYLHEXOIC ACID
Some organic acid technology automotive coolants may use 2-EHA or associated carboxylate chemistry. However, it should not be added directly to the coolant without vehicle manufacturer approval, metal and elastomer compatibility, and inhibitor package. Metal 2-ethylhexanoates may be intermediates or components in certain PVC stabilizer and polyurethane catalyst systems. Each metal salt has a different hazard profile and permitting status.
IS ETHYLHEXOIC ACID USED IN FOOD, COSMETICS AND PHARMACEUTICAL APPLICATIONS?
Industrial 2-EHA should not be assumed as a direct food additive, raw material for cosmetic formulations, or drug ingredient. The mention of a cosmetic or pharmaceutical intermediate on some manufacturer pages is not authorization or evidence of safety for the use of the free acid in the end product. Current regulations and toxicological evaluation on the basis of ingredient/derivative are required in areas involving end-user exposure, especially due to reproduction/developmental toxicity concerns. Migration and regulatory compliance should also be verified on the final material for special esters, plastics or coatings for food contact.
INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS OF ETHYLHEXOIC ACID
In the industrial use plan, acid purity, acid value, free water, traces of heavy metals, color, metal type, reaction equivalent for salt or ester production, solvent type, process temperature, oxidative stability of the product, and workplace exposure should be considered together. The actual active metal percentage in the metal desiccant application, the reaction conversion and by-product control in the ester application are decisive. The specifications of these two applications should not be confused with each other.
WHAT PROBLEMS CAN ETHYLHEXOIC ACID HELP SOLVE?
When suitable branched fatty acid is required for metal carboxylate production, 2-ROM is a raw material candidate. If alternative carboxylic acid is sought in synthetic esters, the chain structure of 2-ROM can be evaluated. If the paint dryer performance is insufficient, the amount of active metal, metal desiccant type, and resin chemistry should be examined instead of directly increasing the amount of 2-EHA. If there is refrigerant corrosion, adding only free acid is not a safe solution; the entire inhibitor system should be analyzed. If phase separation is seen in the aqueous formulation, solubility and degree of neutralization should be checked.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN USING ETHYLHEXOIC ACID
CAS 149-57-5 identification, product grade, current SDS, exposure limitations, product purity, water and acid value, compatible storage material, processing temperature, and waste management should be checked. Occupational health practices should be based on risk assessment, especially due to classifications associated with pregnancy, fertility, and developmental toxicity. The product should not be tested in direct mixtures intended for the consumer; it should be evaluated under controlled industrial laboratory conditions.
INITIAL FORMULATION APPROACHES FOR ETHYLHEXOIC ACID
The following examples have been prepared to illustrate how 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid can be screened for formulation compatibility and neutralization behavior in the laboratory. Verified commercial recipes are not final product manufacturing instructions or regulatory approvals. Percentages are by weight, totaling 100% in each sample.
The prescriptions were specifically selected for low acid load and controlled analytical evaluation. It should not be applied without a suitable facility, technical personnel, risk assessment, ventilation and up-to-date SDS in terms of occupational health.

Isopropyl alcohol: 2.00%
Total: 100.00%
Sample B – 0.25% Ethylhexoic Acid
Alkyd resin solution: 20.00%
Butyl acetate: 77.75%
2-Ethylhexanoic Acid: 0.25%
Isopropyl alcohol: 2.00%
Total: 100.00%
Sample C – 0.50% Ethylhexoic Acid
Alkyd resin solution: 20.00%
Butyl acetate: 77.50%
2-Ethylhexanoic Acid: 0.50%

Butyl acetate: 77.00%
2-Ethylhexanoic Acid: 1.00%
Isopropyl alcohol: 2.00%
Total: 100.00%
Note: The solids ratio of the alkyd resin solution should be kept the same in all samples. Here, the value of 20.00% refers to the weight share of the resin solution added to the total mixture. Since these formulations do not contain active metal desiccant or metal salt, there is no claim regarding drying performance.
Application approach:
2-A control sample without ROM is prepared.
The same resin grade and the same solvent quality are used in all samples.
2-ROM is evaluated at different low levels.
Initial clarity, color, and viscosity are measured.
Physical stability is monitored at low and high temperature.
Phase separation, sediment, and post-dwell color change are recorded.
If proper metal surface or coating performance is required, separate test protocol is used.
The lowest dose range that is best compatible with the resin is determined.
EXAMPLE 2: ETHYLHEXOIC ACID PARTIAL NEUTRALIZATION / AQUEOUS ENVIRONMENT SCREENING
Purpose: To evaluate the effect of controlled base addition at the same concentration of 2-EHA on pH, clarity, and phase separation.
Starting ingredients (wt%):
Control A – Non-neutralized system
Deionized water: 97.00%
2-Ethylhexanoic Acid: 1.00%
Sodium hydroxide (100% active base): 0.00%
Propylene glycol: 2.00%
Total: 100.00%
Sample B – System with 0.07% NaOH
Deionized water: 96.93%
2-Ethylhexanoic Acid: 1.00%
Sodium hydroxide (100% active base): 0.07%
Propylene glycol: 2.00%
Total: 100.00%
Sample C – System with 0.14% NaOH
Deionized water: 96.86%
2-Ethylhexanoic Acid: 1.00%
Sodium hydroxide (100% active base): 0.14%
Propylene glycol: 2.00%
Total: 100.00%
Sample D – system with 0.28% NaOH
Deionized water: 96.72%
2-Ethylhexanoic Acid: 1.00%
Sodium hydroxide (100% active base): 0.28%
Propylene glycol: 2.00%
Total: 100.00%
Neutralization calculation:
The molecular weight of 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid is approximately 144.21 g/mol, while the molecular weight of sodium hydroxide is 40.00 g/mol.
Approximately 0.277 g of pure NaOH is required for theoretical complete neutralization of 1.00 g of 2-EHA.
Accordingly, the approximate theoretical neutralization degrees in the samples are:
Control A: 0%
Sample B: 25%
Sample C: 50%
Sample D: 100%
These calculations were made on 100% pure active NaOH. When using a commercial NaOH solution with a lower concentration, the amount of solution added and the water ratio should be recalculated.
The theoretical degree of neutralization is not a guarantee of the actual pH or clarity value. These properties must be experimentally verified.
Application approach:
A control sample containing 2-ROMH but without added NaOH is prepared.
The concentration of 2-ROM is maintained at 1.00% in all samples.
The amount of NaOH is gradually increased.
The amount of deionized water in each sample is adjusted so that the total formulation is 100%.
The neutralization process is carried out in a controlled manner.
The pH values of the samples are measured.
Clarity, turbidity and phase separation are evaluated.
Storage stability at low and high temperatures is examined.
The optimal neutralization level is determined based on pH and physical stability results.
ALTERNATIVES AND COMPARISON OF ETHYLHEXOIC ACID
Carbon number alone is not sufficient in alternative selection. Branching, acid value, metal salt forming behavior, ester properties, toxicological classification, odor, cost, pH, process conditions and legislation should be evaluated together.
ETHYLHEXOIC ACID AND N-OCTANOIC ACID
Octanoic Acid (Caprylic Acid) is a straight-chain C8 monocarboxylic acid. 2-EHA, on the other hand, is branched, although it shares the same C8 formula. The melting/freezing behavior, odor, solubility, and properties derived from the ester may differ. The same molecular weight does not imply direct substitution.
ETHYLHEXOIC ACID AND NEODECANOIC ACID
Neodecanoic Acid can be a commercial mixture of branched C10 carboxylic acid isomers. Metal carboxylate and coating can be alternative in desiccant chemistry, but the acid equivalent, metal salt solubility and processing performance are different. The same weight should not be changed.
ETHYLHEXOIC ACID AND 3,5,5-TRIMETHYLHEXANOIC ACID
3,5,5-Trimethylhexanoic Acid is a nine-carbon branched monocarboxylic acid. It can be evaluated for special esters and metal carboxylate derivatives. It requires separate prescription and compatibility screening as the branching and carbon number of the molecule alter physical and thermal performance.
ETHYLHEXOIC ACID AND 2-ETHYLHEXANOL
2-Ethylhexanol is an alcohol with a hydroxyl group; CAS No is 104-76-7. 2-EHA is a carboxylic acid; CAS No is 149-57-5. Despite the similarity in name, their functions in acid-base reactions and ester synthesis are different. It is not a one-to-one chemical alternative.
ETHYLHEXOIC ACID AND SODIUM 2-ETHYLHEXANOATE
Sodium 2-Ethylhexanoate is the sodium salt of 2-EHA. It is not expected to exhibit the same pH, solubility, and corrosive behavior as the free acid. In a refrigerant or aqueous inhibitor formulation, equivalence must be verified through active carboxylate equivalent, pH, metal compatibility, and final legislation.

OXEA's 2025 sales specifications also include a minimum product purity of 99.50%, a maximum of 0.10% water, and a maximum of 10 APHA/Hazen colors. These belong to specific manufacturer grades and should not be applied to the entire market as a mandatory general limit.
STORAGE AND HANDLING OF ETHYLHEXOIC ACID
The product should be stored in suitable, chemical-resistant, tightly closed packaging. Uncontrolled contact with strong bases, oxidizers, and other incompatible raw materials should be avoided. It should be kept away from high temperature and ignition sources. Even if the product's flash point is above 100 °C, there is a risk of high-temperature burning. The storage area should have a spill containment system, proper ventilation, and fire protection arrangements. Metal tank, gasket, hose, and coating compatibility should be verified with grade's SDS and manufacturer recommendations.
The dangerous goods transport classification should not be given by fabricating a single general UN number for all packaging and shipment conditions. For actual shipment, the current SDS Part 14 and the carrier's relevant ADR/IMDG/IATA assessment should be used. Waste should not be discharged directly into sewers or the environment.
ETHYLHEXOIC ACID SAFETY INFORMATION
2-Ethylhexanoic Acid is a hazardous industrial chemical. The Safework Australia chemical classification register includes Category 2 for skin irritation and Category 2 for reproductive toxicity (H315, H361fd). Since the classification may vary between countries and updated European registrations, the current SDS and local legislation of the raw material received should be taken as basis.
H315: Causes skin irritation.
H361fd: Suspected of harm to reproductive ability and unborn child.
Exposure should be prevented; the risk of skin contact, splashing, vapor/mist inhalation and ingestion should be controlled. Appropriate eye-face protection and chemical-resistant gloves should be selected according to the workplace risk analysis. Special exposure restrictions in terms of pregnancy and reproductive health should be addressed separately in the enterprise. There is a special warning in the Perstorp product document that pregnant, newly born or breastfeeding employees should not work with this chemical. First aid, spill and fire procedures specified in the SDS should be applied.
A history of old listing and subsequent delisting of this substance in the California Proposition 65 records does not eliminate the current EU or other country classification. Current market and product-specific assessment is essential.
WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING ETHYLHEXOIC ACID?
First of all, it should be defined whether the product sought is free 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid, sodium salt, metal octate desiccant or ester derivative. Then, CAS number, purity, water, acid value, color, contaminant limits, process used, packaging and safety classification should be matched.
Two manufacturer grades with the same CAS number may differ in acid value, water, trace impurities, color and batch consistency. Acid equivalent and water in metal salt synthesis; active ratio of metal and solvent in paint dryer application; acid purity and side reaction possibilities in ester production determine the cost. Price evaluation should not be made only on the purchase price per kilogram.

ETHYLHEXOIC ACID – TECHNICAL SUMMARY
Ethylhexoic Acid is the alternative name used for 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid (2-EHA). Its chemical identity is defined by the formula CAS 149-57-5, EC 205-743-6, and C₈H₁₆O₂. It is a branched aliphatic C8 acid containing a single carboxylic acid group, with a molecular weight of approximately 144.21 g/mol.
Its most important commercial applications are metal 2-ethylhexanoate desiccant salts, synthetic esters, coating and dye chemistry, certain PVC and industrial additive intermediates. Free acid and metal desiccant, ester or sodium salt are not the same product. Product characteristics and toxicological status should be evaluated separately.
The technical data from Eastman, Perstorp and OXEA show that the parameters of high purity, controlled water, color and acid value are important. Commercial high purity grades can have a minimum purity of 99.5%, a maximum of 0.10% water and a maximum of 10 APHA/Hazen color values. Depending on the source and measurement condition, the product shows a boiling point of approximately 223–228 °C, a flash point of 114–118 °C and limited water solubility.
Skin irritation, suspicion of reproductive/developmental toxicity and workplace exposure are primary issues in product safety assessment. The safety of the end product or process cannot be accepted solely by looking at the theoretical use of this chemical. Current SDS and local legislation are essential.
The initial formulation section of this dossier includes an organic phase compatibility scan and a partial neutralization sweep. Eight model recipes are complete to 100 wt%. These are experimental evaluation recommendations; they are not commercial product warranties or safe manufacturing approvals.
Product identity, commercial grade, purity, acid value, water, color, packaging, quantity and up-to-date TDS/SDS/COA documents should be requested from Ataman Kimya in the supply evaluation.
