FINNTALC M15

CAS Number: 14807-96-6

Finntalc M15 is a hydrated magnesium silicate.

Finntalc M15 is a hydrated magnesium silicate with chemical formula of Mg3Si4O10(OH)2.
Finntalc grades are purified in a cascade of multiple flotation cells.

This process results in a tight definition of the talc composition, making this natural product similar to a synthetic chemical.
In combination with a precisely controlled particle size distribution, this ensures exact reproducibility in formulations.

Finntalc M15 is a part of the most tightly defined talc product lines worldwide, with the highest consistency and reproducibility, and has 18% of the particle size <2 µm.
Finntalc M15 has applications in interior flat emulsion paints, exterior flat emulsion paints, multi-purpose interior/exterior paints, flexible exterior wall paints, semi-gloss emulsion paints, outdoor wood paints, elastomeric coatings, silk and eggshell paints, general industrial protective coatings, heavy duty maintenance coatings, high solids-low VOC coatings, alkyd, epoxy, RU primers - solvent based, water based epoxies, ballast coatings, marine coatings, offshore/onshore coatings, automotive OEM-intermediate coatings, commercial vehicles, freight container, yacht paints, and gel coats.

Finntalc M15 by Elementis is floated, medium sized, laminar talc (Mg-silicate).
Finntalc M15 is recommended for paints & coatings.

Finntalc is the second most popular filler, after calcium carbonate, used in the production of LFM.
The hydrophobic surface and lamellar shape of talc particles give decorative lacquers many useful properties:

Improves abrasion resistance according to ISO 11998 and cracking, weather resistance, increases protection against external influences, water-repellent properties, easy to clean.
Promotes pseudoplasticity, improves rheological and thixotropic properties, prevents sedimentation, increases shelf life, improves coverage.

Provides better adhesion to the surface, irreplaceable in the composition of corrosion-resistant coatings.
Has an extremely stable quality, ideal for paint tinting systems.

Finntalc M15 is an ideal solution for exterior and interior paints - matte, semi-glossy, silky, and materials for exterior finishing of wooden and stone (concrete, brick) surfaces.

First Aid Measures of Finntalc M15:

Description of first aid measures of Finntalc M15:
Eye contact: Rinse with copious quantities of water and seek medical attention if irritation persists.

Inhalation: No special first aid measures.
Remove to fresh air and get medical attention in case of serious respiratory problems.

Ingestion: No first-aid measure required.

Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed:
Symptoms of acute accidental exposure would be non-specific and similar to those of a massive inhalation of any dust without toxic effects.
These symptoms may include coughing, expectoration, sneezing, and difficulty in breathing due to upper respiratory tract irritation.

Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed:
No specific actions are required.

Firefighting Measures of Finntalc M15:

Extinguishing media:
All extinguishing media can be used.

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture
The product is not flammable, combustible or explosive.
No hazardous thermal decomposition.

Advice for firefighters of Finntalc M15:
No specific fire-fighting protection is required.
Use an extinguishing agent suitable for the surrounding fire.

Accidental Release Measures of Finntalc M15:

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures:
Avoid airborne dust generation.
If the generation of dust is likely, personal protective equipment should be worn in compliance with national legislation.

Environmental precautions:
No special requirements.
Contain spillage and clean up as indicated below.

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up:
Dry product should be cleaned with a shovel or vacuum cleaner while wearing personal protective equipment in compliance with national legislation.

Washing the floor with water is not recommended since Finntalc M15 may cause the floor to become slippery.
However, if talc is already wet, and only in this case, the floor should be thoroughly flushed with water to remove all slipperiness.

Handling and Storage of Finntalc M15:

Precautions for safe handling of Finntalc M15:
Avoid airborne dust generation.
Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where airborne dust is generated.

In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory protective equipment.
Handle packaged products carefully to prevent accidental bursting.

Conditions for safe storage, including any imcompatibilities:
Technical measures/Precautions: Keep the product dry and in closed containers.

Specific end use(s):
If you require advice on specific uses, please contact your supplier.

Exposure Controls/Personal Protection of Finntalc M15:

Control parameters:
Follow workplace regulatory exposure limits for all types of airborne dust (e.g. total dust, respirable dust).

Exposure controls of Finntalc M15:

Appropriate engineering controls:
Minimise airborne dust generation.

Use process enclosures, local exhaust ventilation or other engineering controls to keep airborne levels below specified exposure limits.
If user operations generate dust, fumes or mist, use ventilation to keep exposure to airborne particles below the exposure limit.

Apply organisational measures, e.g. by isolating personnel from dusty areas.
Remove and wash soiled clothing.

Individual protection measures, such as personal protective equipment:
Eye/face protection: Wear safety glasses with side-shields in circumstances where there is a risk of dust generation which could lead to mechanical irritation of the eye.

Skin protection: No specific requirement.
For hands, see below.

Hand protection: Protective gloves are not necessary but recommended for those prone to skin irritation or dryness.

Respiratory protection: In case of prolonged exposure to airborne dust concentrations, wear a respiratory protective equipment that complies with the requirements of European or national legislation.
The use of half or full face masks with filters against particles of category 2 or 3 (FP2 - FP3) is recommended.
Particle filters.

Environmental exposure controls:
Avoid wind dispersal.
