Formic acid ( systematic name : methanoic acid) HCOOH is an organic compound , the first representative in the series of saturated monobasic acids. Registered as a food additive under
the designation E236 . Formic acid got its name because it was first isolated in 1670 by the English naturalist John Ray from red forest ants . It is also found in nature in bees ,
in nettles , and needles.
The salts and anions of formic acid are called formates.

Basically, formic acid is used as a preservative and antibacterial agent in feed preparation. Formic acid slows down the processes of decay and decay, so that hay and silage treated
with it last longer. Formic acid is also used in mordant dyeing of wool, to fight parasites in beekeeping, as a solvent in some chemical reactions.

Laboratories use the decomposition of liquid formic acid by hot concentrated sulfuric acid , or by passing formic acid over phosphorus oxide P 2 O 5 to produce carbon monoxide .

In medicine it is used for the preparation of solutions of performic acid ("permur", or the "C-4" recipe (a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and formic acid)). Pervomur is used in surgery
as a preoperative antiseptic, in the pharmaceutical industry for disinfection of equipment
