Is GENAMİN PA-SH D (BTMS) dangerous or harmful to our hair? This cosmetic active ingredient is often found in the formulations of care products (definition cream, styling, hair milk, mask or even conditioner) for curly or frizzy hair or dry and damaged hair in general. On the web, as usual, there is a lot of misinformation / confusion about this with many articles recommending it be avoided on the grounds that it would not be "healthy" for the hair. As early as 2011, I wrote an article on the function of quats (amonium uaternaries) which were not yet discussed at the time and on their use instead of or in combination with silicones. My article has since been copied / plagiarized a lot on the web but distorted. So let's clarify the role of GENAMİN PA-SH D and its mode of action on our hair.

Who are you O you GENAMİN PA-SH D? Nature and Properties
GENAMİN PA-SH D belongs to the category of cationic surfactants (also called sulfates) whose end (head) belongs to the family of quaternary ammonium salts (often abbreviated as quat). It is a semi-compound ingredient since it contains a mixture of 25% GENAMİN PA-SH D quat and a cetearyl alcohol fatty acid and sometimes a glycol.

Benefits for the hair: Due to their electric charge opposite to that of the hair (negative), they have the particularity of attaching (adsorption) to the hair fiber in a humid environment, like magnets (the opposite charges attracting = attraction electrostatic) and adhere well to it. They are therefore film-forming active ingredients because they form a protective and sheathing film around the hair which smooths / flattens the scales on its surface and thus reduces friction causing tangling of the hair (lubricating action which promotes the gliding of the comb / brush without a hitch and without breakage of the hair) as well as a "rough" aspect. Finally, it reduces static electricity (an antistatic agent) which causes hair to rebound and become electric. The sheathing and lubricating action of BTMS is similar to that of oils, butters or fatty acids, that is to say a nourishing and moisturizing action (in the sense that it allows the control of the flow of humidity that enters and leaves of hair and limit hygral fatigue). However, the advantage of BTMS is that it is deposited in a targeted manner so it will tend to grease my hair, stick to my hair and it also adheres better to the fiber thanks to its electrical charge in affinity with that of hair keratin.

The word "sulphate" is often scary because it is associated by ignorance with detergent sulphates (= cleansers by removing impurities but also sebum and any fatty substance in general) or irritants typical of shampoos (Sodium lauryl sulphate -SLS- and sodium laureth sulfate -SLES-) which contain a negative charge, for example. However, there are different types of sulphates with different functions. GENAMİN PA-SH D contains a positive charge, which means that it has no stripping action but on the contrary a beautifying action ("conditioning agent") as well as detangling the hair.

 Genamin PA-SH D is considered one of the softest detangling active ingredients, which explains why it is tolerated by certain organic labels such as Cosmébio and can also be used in baby care. Genamin PA-SH D is also preferable to its cousins ​​Behentrimonium chloride or Cetrimonium chloride for example, which are more irritating to the skin, in particular in products intended for the scalp such as shampoos and co-washings (cream / balm / washing oil) than I personally advise against. The latter two indeed have a slight washing power and therefore detergent as well as biocide (destroys microorganisms), which personally dries my hair especially since I passed the 40 years mark with the arrival of the first White hair. However, BTMS does not have a washing power to my knowledge due to the fatty alcohol it contains.

Finally, Genamin PA-SH D acts as an emulsifying wax (component allowing the mixing of two immiscible substances, in particular oil and fatty substances in general and water).

Is GENAMİN PA-SH D a silicone?
If GENAMİN PA-SH D and silicones are two of the synthetic hair active ingredients aiming to beautify the hair by smoothing and lubricating its surface among other things by the formation of a film around its fiber, they do not belong to the same category ingredient at the molecular level. In fact, silicones are similar to lubricating oils whereas GENAMİN PA-SH D is a quaternary ammonium salt which is deposited in a nanometric layer on the cuticle, in particular in areas with a high negative charge (ie areas of the the most damaged hair), which is why we are talking about intelligent targeted action of its components unlike silicones or other natural fatty substances which coat the hair uniformly without distinction (which can turn out to be fatter and more sticky in particular for thin hair).
GENAMİN PA-SH D can be compared to quaternary ammonium salts (cationic surfactant) generally ending with the suffix "monium" and / or completed with the term "chloride" such as:
