Glucopon 600 CSUP is a BASF alkyl polyglucoside (APG) surfactant, an aqueous solution of C12–C14 alkyl polyglucosides (CAS No 110615-47-9) with approx. 53 % active matter, made from plant-based fatty alcohol and glucose and used as a mild nonionic surfactant in manual dishwashing liquids, laundry detergents, hard surface cleaners and industrial and institutional cleaning products.
The APG surfactant is preferred by formulators who want strong grease removal, good wetting and a stable, creamy foam together with a renewable raw material base, good skin compatibility and a preservative-free product, and it often lets them reduce the amount of harsher anionic or ethoxylated surfactants.
The aqueous alkyl polyglucoside solution works through its amphiphilic molecule: the C12–C14 alkyl chain binds to oily and fatty soil, while the hydrophilic glucose head group stays in water, so Glucopon 600 CSUP lowers surface tension to approx. 28 mN/m, wets surfaces quickly, emulsifies fat and builds synergistic micelles with anionic surfactants.

Glucopon is BASF's trade name family for alkyl polyglucosides in home care, industrial and technical applications, the number 600 identifies the C12–C14 chain length type, and "CSUP" is the designation of this specific aqueous, preservative-free supply form. Chemically, Glucopon 600 CSUP belongs to the alkyl polyglucosides, also called alkyl polyglycosides or simply APG. Because the fatty alcohol is mainly lauryl (C12) and myristyl (C14) alcohol, the product is commonly described as lauryl glucoside or lauryl/myristyl glucoside.
The CAS number 110615-47-9 is registered as "D-Glucopyranose, oligomeric, C10-16-alkyl glycosides", a broad entry that covers several APG grades with chain lengths inside this range. For this reason the same CAS number can appear on products with different chain distributions and properties. The nonionic sugar surfactant should not be confused with short-chain APGs such as decyl glucoside or C8–C10 grades (for example Glucopon 215 or 225 types), which are better hydrotropes and low foamers but weaker degreasers, nor with coco glucoside grades of broader chain distribution.
WHAT IS GLUCOPON 600 CSUP?
The C12–C14 alkyl polyglucoside is a high-foaming, degreasing APG. Its C12–C14 chain makes it the most "detergent-like" member of the APG family: compared with short-chain glucosides, Glucopon 600 CSUP gives much better fat emulsification and foam, while it remains milder than many anionic surfactants. That is why Glucopon 600 CSUP is a common building block of hand dishwashing liquids, where grease removal, foam and skin feel are judged at the same time.
In combination with anionic surfactants such as LAS, SLES or alkyl sulphates, Glucopon 600 CSUP increases and stabilises foam, improves fat removal and helps reduce the skin irritation potential of the anionic part. The APG surfactant also supports the thickening of anionic surfactant systems with electrolyte, in a similar way to alkanolamides, which makes it useful when amide-free formulations are wanted.
From a sustainability point of view, Glucopon 600 CSUP is based entirely on renewable raw materials: fatty alcohol from vegetable oils and glucose from starch. It is supplied without preservatives. The high pH of the delivery form keeps the concentrate stable in storage.
Products that may contain Glucopon 600 CSUP include hand dishwashing liquids, liquid laundry detergents and laundry pre-treaters, all-purpose and kitchen cleaners, bathroom and glass cleaners, alkaline degreasers and vehicle cleaners, I&I cleaning concentrates, mild hand cleaners and agricultural adjuvant formulations.
The aqueous alkyl polyglucoside solution is an aqueous solution of alkyl polyglucosides. Alkyl polyglucosides are made by reacting glucose (or starch-derived glucose syrup) with fatty alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst. The reaction, known as Fischer glycosidation, attaches the fatty chain to the sugar by an acetal (glycosidic) bond. Because glucose can also react with itself, the product is a mixture of mono-, di- and oligoglucosides, and the average number of glucose units per fatty chain is called the degree of polymerisation (DP). Excess fatty alcohol is removed, the product is neutralised and bleached, and the APG is adjusted with water to the supply concentration.
In Glucopon 600 CSUP, the fatty alcohol is a plant-derived C12–C14 cut, typically from coconut or palm kernel oil. The result is a surfactant with a long enough hydrophobic chain for strong surface activity and a sugar head group that is uncharged, highly hydrated and well tolerated by skin.
The exact DP and chain distribution of Glucopon 600 CSUP are manufacturer data and are available on request from Ataman Kimya.

The solubility data show an important practical point: Glucopon 600 CSUP alone does not give a clear solution in water at 10 %. In real formulations it is combined with anionic surfactants, amphoterics or hydrotropes, and together with these Glucopon 600 CSUP is incorporated into clear liquids.
VISCOSITY BEHAVIOUR OF GLUCOPON 600 CSUP
Viscosity is the property that matters most when Glucopon 600 CSUP is pumped, stored or shipped. The viscosity of Glucopon 600 CSUP falls steeply with temperature. According to the manufacturer's viscosity curve (EN 12092, Brookfield), it is roughly:
approx. 20 °C: around 25,000 mPa·s
approx. 30 °C: around 7,500 mPa·s
approx. 40 °C: around 3,000 mPa·s
approx. 50–60 °C: below about 1,500 mPa·s
Dilution with water does not reduce viscosity in a straight line. Typical values at 23 °C after water addition:
+10 % water: approx. 15,000 mPa·s
+20 %: approx. 13,000 mPa·s
+30 %: approx. 12,000 mPa·s
+40 %: approx. 10,000 mPa·s
+50 %: approx. 8,500 mPa·s
+60 %: approx. 5,000 mPa·s
+70 %: approx. 3,500 mPa·s
+80 %: approx. 1,500 mPa·s
+90 %: approx. 250 mPa·s
Pre-diluted Glucopon 600 CSUP therefore remains thick until a large amount of water has been added. In production it is usually easier to add Glucopon 600 CSUP to the water phase (or to the dissolved anionic surfactants) than to add water to Glucopon 600 CSUP, and warming to about 40 °C makes dosing much easier.
HOW GLUCOPON 600 CSUP WORKS IN CLEANING
Wetting: Glucopon 600 CSUP lowers the surface tension of water to about 28 mN/m at only 1 g/L, so cleaning solutions spread over plates, glass and hard surfaces and penetrate textile fibres faster. The EN 1772 data show that wetting improves strongly with concentration.
Emulsification of fat: The C12–C14 chain dissolves in oily soil, and the glucose head keeps the emulsified droplets dispersed, which helps remove kitchen grease and fatty residues.
Foam: Glucopon 600 CSUP produces foam by itself and, more importantly, stabilises foam in the presence of fatty soil, which is the main foam killer in dishwashing.
Synergy: Mixed micelles of Glucopon 600 CSUP with anionic surfactants have a lower critical micelle concentration and better performance than either surfactant alone, and the nonionic sugar head reduces the binding of the anionic surfactant to skin proteins, which contributes to milder products.
Alkali tolerance: Glucopon 600 CSUP is compatible with caustic soda solutions (5 % NaOH in the solubility table), so it can be used in alkaline cleaners where many other nonionics are less suitable.
GLUCOPON 600 CSUP IN HAND DISHWASHING LIQUIDS
Hand dishwashing is the classic home of Glucopon 600 CSUP. A typical modern dishwashing liquid combines an anionic surfactant (LAS, SLES or a mixture), an amphoteric or amine oxide, and an APG such as Glucopon 600 CSUP. In this combination Glucopon 600 CSUP:
- increases the number of plates washed before the foam collapses
- improves removal of fat and baked-on food soil
- gives a richer, creamier foam
- supports viscosity build-up with salt
- improves the skin feel of the product
BASF also uses Glucopon 600 CSUP in its own test formulations, for example in combination with LAS, a fatty alcohol ethoxylate and soap, and in fat-residue dishwashing tests.
GLUCOPON 600 CSUP IN LAUNDRY AND SURFACE CARE
In liquid and powder laundry detergents, Glucopon 600 CSUP adds wetting and oily soil removal, and its tolerance of water hardness helps keep performance in hard water. In pre-treaters and stain sprays it acts on collar and cuff soils.
In all-purpose cleaners, kitchen cleaners and alkaline degreasers, Glucopon 600 CSUP gives good wetting and grease removal. Where streak-free drying is critical, for example on glass, it is usually combined with short-chain APGs or other low-residue surfactants, because long-chain APGs produce more foam and can leave more film.
INDUSTRIAL, INSTITUTIONAL AND TECHNICAL APPLICATIONS OF GLUCOPON 600 CSUP
- I&I cleaning concentrates for kitchens, food service and building care
- alkaline cleaners and degreasers for metal surfaces and workshops
- vehicle and transport cleaners
- bottle and food plant cleaning formulations where caustic tolerance is required
- agrochemical formulations and tank-mix adjuvants, where APGs improve wetting and spreading of spray solutions on leaves
- technical formulations needing a mild, renewable-based wetting agent and emulsifier
For personal care use, BASF offers comparable lauryl glucoside grades in its cosmetic range. The C12–C14 alkyl polyglucoside itself is positioned for detergents and cleaners, for cosmetic projects the appropriate cosmetic grade should be selected, and Ataman Kimya can advise on this.
WHICH PROBLEMS DOES GLUCOPON 600 CSUP SOLVE?
The dishwashing liquid loses foam quickly with greasy dishes → Glucopon 600 CSUP stabilises foam under fat load.
The formula feels harsh on hands → partial replacement of anionic surfactant by Glucopon 600 CSUP improves mildness.
An ethoxylate-free or amide-free formula is required → Glucopon 600 CSUP replaces part of the alcohol ethoxylate or alkanolamide.
The product should be based on renewable raw materials → Glucopon 600 CSUP is made from plant fatty alcohol and glucose.
Nonionic surfactant separates in strongly alkaline cleaners → Glucopon 600 CSUP tolerates caustic soda solutions.
Slow wetting of hydrophobic surfaces → Glucopon 600 CSUP lowers surface tension to approx. 28 mN/m.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN USING GLUCOPON 600 CSUP
- pH: Glucopon 600 CSUP is supplied strongly alkaline (approx. pH 12). The final formulation must be adjusted to its target pH with acid, usually citric acid. Allow for this in the buffer design.
- Acid stability: the glycosidic bond of APGs can slowly hydrolyse in strongly acidic products at elevated temperature. For acidic cleaners, test long-term stability.
- Electrolytes: Glucopon 600 CSUP alone separates in 5 % salt solution. In combination with anionics, salt is used for thickening, but salt levels should be optimised step by step.
- Low temperature: below 30 °C Glucopon 600 CSUP can sediment, homogenise before use.
- Preservation: Glucopon 600 CSUP contains no preservative. The finished formulation, especially after pH reduction, usually needs a suitable preservation system.
- Foam: Glucopon 600 CSUP is a medium-to-high foamer and is not suitable as the main surfactant in low-foam applications such as automatic dishwashing or CIP systems.
- Clarity: Glucopon 600 CSUP alone gives an opaque emulsion in water, clear products need co-surfactants or hydrotropes.
INITIAL FORMULATION APPROACHES WITH GLUCOPON 600 CSUP
The component percentages below are illustrative laboratory starting points, not validated commercial recipes or BASF formulations. Percentages refer to raw materials as supplied and total 100.00 % for each example. Final pH adjustment, preservation, viscosity and component levels must be established by laboratory testing, any adjustment must be balanced against the water fraction.
1. HAND DISHWASHING LIQUID (MILD, HIGH FOAM)
Illustrative initial components (% w/w):
Water: 64.29 %
SLES solution (70 % active): 18.00 %
Cocamidopropyl betaine solution (30 % active): 10.00 %
Glucopon 600 CSUP (as supplied): 5.00 %
Sodium chloride: 1.50 %
Citric acid solution (50 %): 0.50 %
Suitable preservative system (as supplied): 0.20 %
Fragrance: 0.50 %
Water-soluble colour preparation: 0.01 %
Total: 100.00 %
The SLES and betaine levels correspond to 12.60 % and 3.00 % active matter, respectively. The preservative, fragrance and colour levels are illustrative allowances, compatibility, legal limits and the preservative supplier's recommended use level must be confirmed. Adjust the acid and salt to the measured target pH and viscosity.
Start with water, dissolve LAS or SLES (for example about 10–15 % active), add an amphoteric such as cocamidopropyl betaine or an amine oxide (about 2–4 % active), then add Glucopon 600 CSUP at about 3–8 % (as supplied). Adjust pH to about 6–8 with citric acid, thicken with sodium chloride, add fragrance, colour and preservative. Test the plate count and viscosity, then optimise the anionic to Glucopon 600 CSUP ratio.
2. ALL-PURPOSE CLEANER CONCENTRATE
Illustrative initial components (% w/w):
Water: 90.50 %
Glucopon 600 CSUP (as supplied): 4.00 %
Sodium cumene sulphonate solution (40 % active): 3.00 %
Sodium citrate: 2.00 %
Citric acid solution (50 %), initial pH-adjustment allowance: 0.50 %
Total: 100.00 %
Adjust the acid allowance to reach the intended pH, balancing any change with water. Determine preservation requirements through testing, if a preservative is needed, replace the corresponding water fraction with the validated preservative system.
Combine about 3–6 % Glucopon 600 CSUP with a small amount of a short-chain APG or hydrotrope for clarity, add sodium citrate or another builder, and adjust to mildly alkaline pH (about 9–10). The APG surfactant provides grease removal and foam, the short-chain component improves streak-free drying.
3. ALKALINE DEGREASER
Illustrative initial components (% w/w):
Water: 88.00 %
Glucopon 600 CSUP (as supplied): 3.00 %
Sodium hydroxide solution (50 %): 4.00 %
Sodium cumene sulphonate solution (40 % active): 5.00 %
Total: 100.00 %
The sodium hydroxide solution contributes 2.00 % NaOH to the complete formulation. Add the alkaline solution slowly to water with suitable cooling and chemical-resistant protective equipment, verify heat generation, material compatibility and final-product hazard classification.
Use Glucopon 600 CSUP at about 2–5 % in a caustic soda or silicate-based cleaner together with a hydrotrope (for example sodium cumene sulphonate or a short-chain APG). The caustic tolerance of Glucopon 600 CSUP allows a stable alkaline product, check stability at low and high storage temperatures.
These levels are starting points only. Every formulation containing Glucopon 600 CSUP must be tested for stability, performance, preservation and labelling requirements.
HOW DOES GLUCOPON 600 CSUP WORK AT THE MOLECULAR LEVEL?
Glucopon 600 CSUP is an aqueous solution of lauryl glucoside, a non-ionic alkyl polyglucoside surfactant built from fatty alcohols and glucose. Each molecule combines a sugar head group that binds water through many hydroxyl groups with a C12–C14 alkyl chain that avoids water. Nearly all of its functions in cleaning and personal care products come from how this two-part structure behaves at surfaces and in solution.
Surface activity and wetting: In water, lauryl glucoside molecules move to the air–water and oil–water interfaces, where the alkyl chains point away from the water and the glucose heads stay hydrated. This orientation lowers surface and interfacial tension, so the solution spreads more easily on skin, hair, textiles and hard surfaces and penetrates soil layers faster.
Micelle formation and solubilisation: Above a certain concentration, the alkyl polyglucoside molecules assemble into micelles. The hydrophobic chains gather in the core, where oils, greasy soil and fragrance components can be taken up and carried in the water phase. The same micellar behaviour explains the product’s solubilising and hydrotropic effect, which helps keep other formulation ingredients dissolved.
Foam formation: The glucose head groups form hydrogen bonds with each other and with surrounding water, building a tightly packed, well-hydrated film at the bubble surface. This film slows drainage and bubble collapse, giving Glucopon 600 CSUP a foam profile closer to anionic surfactants than to most other non-ionics.
Mildness: As a non-ionic surfactant with a large, strongly hydrated head group, the alkyl polyglucoside interacts less aggressively with skin proteins and the lipid barrier than charged surfactants. When combined with anionic surfactants, lauryl glucoside forms mixed micelles that reduce the amount of free anionic surfactant available to bind to skin, which lowers the overall irritation potential of the formulation.
Synergy and viscosity building: Mixed micelles of lauryl glucoside and anionic surfactants pack differently from either surfactant alone. Depending on the ratio and the electrolyte content, the micelles can grow into elongated structures, which raises viscosity and improves foam quality in shampoos, shower gels and dishwashing liquids.
Behaviour in alkaline and hot systems: The glycosidic bond linking the sugar to the fatty chain is stable under alkaline conditions, so Glucopon 600 CSUP keeps working in strongly alkaline cleaners. Unlike ethoxylated non-ionics, alkyl polyglucosides do not show a typical cloud point in normal use, their solubility does not drop sharply as temperature rises, which supports performance in hot cleaning processes.
Temperature behaviour of the concentrate: The concentrated solution thickens to a paste at lower temperatures and may become cloudy or partly crystallise in the cold. These changes reflect a physical rearrangement of the surfactant molecules rather than a chemical change, and the material returns to a homogeneous state on warming and mixing.
Biodegradation: In the environment, microorganisms cleave the glycosidic bond and break down both the glucose unit and the fatty alcohol chain. Because both building blocks are common natural substances, lauryl glucoside is regarded as readily biodegradable.
Foam, viscosity and mildness in the final product depend not only on the alkyl polyglucoside itself but also on surfactant ratios, electrolyte level, pH and the other ingredients in the formulation. Glucopon 600 CSUP dosage and formulation conditions should therefore be confirmed through laboratory trials.
ALTERNATIVES TO GLUCOPON 600 CSUP

SAFETY OF GLUCOPON 600 CSUP
According to the manufacturer, no ill effects are known from using Glucopon 600 CSUP for its intended purpose when the usual precautions for handling chemicals and the safety data sheet are followed. As a concentrated surfactant with a pH of about 12, Glucopon 600 CSUP must nevertheless be handled with care: concentrated alkyl polyglucoside solutions of this type are typically classified as causing serious eye damage (Eye Dam. 1, H318), and some suppliers also list skin irritation.
Wear tight-fitting safety goggles, chemical-resistant gloves and protective clothing when handling the concentrate. In case of eye contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water for several minutes, remove contact lenses and seek medical advice. After skin contact, wash with water. If swallowed, rinse the mouth and drink water, do not induce vomiting. Spills are slippery, absorb with inert material and do not allow the concentrate to enter drains or surface water undiluted.
Alkyl polyglucosides are known as readily biodegradable surfactants with low aquatic toxicity in diluted form, product-specific ecological data and the exact hazard classification of Glucopon 600 CSUP are given in the SDS, available on request from Ataman Kimya.
