Glucopon 650 EC is a BASF alkyl polyglucoside (APG) surfactant, an aqueous solution of C8–C14 alkyl polyglucosides (CAS No 110615-47-9 and 68515-73-1) with approx. 52 % active content, based on plant-derived fatty alcohols and glucose and used in hand dishwashing liquids, liquid laundry detergents, all-purpose and hard surface cleaners, institutional cleaning and vehicle care products.
The C8–C14 alkyl polyglucoside is chosen when formulators want the dishwashing and detergent performance of a long-chain APG together with easier handling, because its blend of short and long alkyl chains gives a much lower pour point (approx. -7 °C), very easy dilution with water and better low-temperature behaviour than pure C12–C14 grades such as Glucopon 600 CSUP.
The APG blend works by combining two kinds of APG molecules: the C12–C14 fraction provides fat emulsification and foam, while the C8–C10 fraction acts as a wetting agent and hydrotrope, so Glucopon 650 EC cleans, wets and helps keep concentrated formulations homogeneous.

Glucopon is BASF's brand for alkyl polyglucosides used in home care, industrial and institutional cleaning. In Glucopon 650 EC two APG types are combined, which is why two CAS numbers are used: 110615-47-9 for the C10–C16 alkyl glycosides and 68515-73-1 for the C8–C10 (decyl octyl) glycosides. "MB" in Glucopon 650 EC/MB refers to a mass-balance supply variant offered by BASF.
Because the chain distribution covers caprylyl (C8), decyl (C10), lauryl (C12) and longer chains, Glucopon 650 EC is described as coco-glucoside or as a combination of caprylyl, decyl and lauryl glucoside. Some suppliers also list CAS 141464-42-8 for C8–C14 APG products, this number is not used in the manufacturer's identification of Glucopon 650 EC and should not be copied into specifications without confirmation.
WHAT IS GLUCOPON 650 EC?
The nonionic sugar surfactant can be seen as an "all-rounder" in the Glucopon range. Long-chain APGs are excellent degreasers but are hard to handle: they become cloudy, sediment and thicken strongly in cold storage and on dilution. Short-chain APGs are clear, easy to dissolve and good wetting agents, but they clean fat poorly and foam little. The aqueous APG solution blends both, and BASF positions it as performing on the same level as Glucopon 600 CSUP in manual dishwashing, particularly together with anionic surfactants, while offering improved low-temperature behaviour.
This matters in practice. Producers without heated tanks, warehouses that are cold in winter and customers who make concentrated liquids all benefit from a surfactant that stays pourable at lower temperatures and becomes thin as soon as it is diluted. The C8–C14 alkyl polyglucoside is therefore used both in standard and in concentrated dishwashing liquids.
The APG blend is made entirely from renewable raw materials. BASF classifies it as a wholly bio-based surfactant (bio-based content of at least 95 %), lists it as readily biodegradable according to OECD 301, and offers RSPO-certified supply on request. Like other APGs, Glucopon 650 EC is known for good skin compatibility, and BASF promotes it for dermatologically tested and sensitive-skin dish and laundry products.
In finished products, Glucopon 650 EC is found in:
- manual and concentrated manual dishwashing liquids
- liquid laundry detergents, including products for sensitive skin
- all-purpose and hard surface cleaners
- toilet rim blocks
- commercial and institutional cleaning products
- vehicle and transport care products
- food service and kitchen hygiene products
The nonionic sugar surfactant is a sugar-based nonionic surfactant. According to the manufacturer, Glucopon 650 EC is an aqueous solution of alkyl polyglucosides based on natural, plant-origin C8–C14 fatty alcohol, free of preservatives. Alkyl polyglucosides are produced by acid-catalysed reaction of glucose with fatty alcohols (Fischer glycosidation). The fatty chain is bound to the glucose unit through a glycosidic bond, and because glucose units can also join to each other, the product contains mono-, di- and oligoglucosides. The average number of glucose units per fatty chain is called the degree of polymerisation (DP).
In Glucopon 650 EC the fatty alcohol side contains a broad range of chain lengths, from C8 to C14. The short chains lower the pour point and the dilution viscosity of Glucopon 650 EC and act as a built-in hydrotrope, the long chains give surface activity, emulsification and foam. The resulting surfactant is uncharged, so Glucopon 650 EC is insensitive to water hardness and combines well with anionic, amphoteric and other nonionic surfactants.
The aqueous APG solution is supplied as an aqueous concentrate. The delivery form is alkaline (pH approx. 12, measured 20 % in 15 % IPA), as is common for APG concentrates, and supplier listings name a small amount of sodium hydroxide (CAS 1310-73-2) among the components. Exact chain distribution and DP of Glucopon 650 EC are available on request from Ataman Kimya.

VISCOSITY AND DILUTION BEHAVIOUR OF GLUCOPON 650 EC
The viscosity of Glucopon 650 EC drops strongly as temperature rises, which should be taken into account during storage, pumping and shipping. Unlike long-chain APG concentrates, Glucopon 650 EC becomes thin quickly when water is added. Typical values at 23 °C (Brookfield LVT):
+10 % water: approx. 650 mPa·s
+20 % water: approx. 250 mPa·s
+30 % water: approx. 110 mPa·s
+40 % water: approx. 60 mPa·s
+50 % water: approx. 30 mPa·s
+60 % water: approx. 20 mPa·s
For comparison, Glucopon 600 CSUP still has a viscosity of approx. 15,000 mPa·s after the addition of 10 % water. This easy dilution is one of the main processing advantages of Glucopon 650 EC: premixes can be prepared and pumped without passing through thick gel phases. The full viscosity–temperature curve of the undiluted product is given in the manufacturer's TDS, available on request from Ataman Kimya.
GLUCOPON 650 EC AND GLUCOPON 600 CSUP: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
Both products are BASF APGs for detergents and cleaners with about 52–53 % active content, and both are used mainly in dishwashing. The difference is the chain distribution:
Glucopon 600 CSUP: C12–C14 APG. Pour point approx. 5 °C, sediments below about 30 °C, very viscous on dilution (approx. 15,000 mPa·s after +10 % water), faster wetting (EN 1772, 2 g/L: approx. 45 s), foam volume approx. 250 cm³ (EN 12728). Maximum storage temperature 50 °C.
Glucopon 650 EC: C8–C14 APG. Pour point approx. -7 °C, thin on dilution (approx. 650 mPa·s after +10 % water), wetting at 2 g/L approx. 55 s, foam volume approx. 500 cm³ in the same EN 12728 test, clear in 5 % hydrochloric acid. Maximum storage temperature 40 °C.
In other words, Glucopon 650 EC gives up a little wetting speed but gains much easier handling at low temperature and on dilution, higher foam in the standard foam test and a broader functional profile. When the formulation is concentrated, when the plant has no heated storage, or when the product must stay homogeneous over a wide temperature range, Glucopon 650 EC is usually the more practical choice.
HOW GLUCOPON 650 EC PERFORMS IN FORMULATIONS
Dishwashing: Glucopon 650 EC improves emulsification of food fat, builds high foam and helps achieve a good shine on dishes and glasses. With anionic surfactants such as LAS or SLES it creates synergistic mixed micelles.
Thickening: Glucopon 650 EC thickens together with anionic surfactants and electrolyte, which helps formulators reach the desired viscosity of dishwashing liquids without alkanolamides.
Wetting and penetration: the C8–C10 fraction of Glucopon 650 EC gives fast wetting of hard surfaces and fabrics.
Solubilising: Glucopon 650 EC acts as a hydrotrope and can help incorporate other ingredients, such as fragrances or less soluble surfactants, into clear liquids.
Dispersing: Glucopon 650 EC disperses particulate soil and helps prevent redeposition.
Mildness: as a nonionic sugar surfactant, Glucopon 650 EC reduces the irritation potential of anionic-rich formulas, which supports labelling advantages in concentrated products.
Streak-free cleaning: in institutional and vehicle cleaning, Glucopon 650 EC is used for streak-free results and good compatibility with plastics.

WHICH PROBLEMS DOES GLUCOPON 650 EC SOLVE?
- APG concentrate becomes cloudy or sediments in a cold warehouse: Glucopon 650 EC has better low-temperature behaviour than pure long-chain APG.
- Concentrated dishwashing liquid is hard to keep clear and homogeneous: the short-chain fraction of Glucopon 650 EC acts as a hydrotrope.
- Need for both degreasing and fast wetting in one surfactant: Glucopon 650 EC covers C8 to C14 chains.
- Formula should be milder and better for labelling: Glucopon 650 EC replaces part of the anionic surfactant.
- Wish for 100 % renewable surfactant base: Glucopon 650 EC is wholly bio-based and readily biodegradable.
- Streaks on glossy or plastic surfaces in I&I cleaning: Glucopon 650 EC is used for streak-free cleaning.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN USING GLUCOPON 650 EC
- Glucopon 650 EC is supplied as an alkaline concentrate. Adjust the pH of the finished product with an acid such as citric acid.
- Under strongly acidic conditions and high temperature, the glycosidic bond of APGs can slowly hydrolyse, test acidic cleaners for long-term stability.
- Glucopon 650 EC is insoluble in solvent naphtha, ethanol/isopropanol and aromatic hydrocarbons at 10 %, solvent-containing cleaners need suitable co-surfactants or hydrotropes.
- Optimise salt additions in small steps when thickening with electrolyte.
- After pH adjustment and dilution, the finished product usually needs a preservative system.
- Glucopon 650 EC is a foaming surfactant and is not intended as the main surfactant in low-foam uses such as automatic dishwashing or CIP cleaning.
- Glucopon 650 EC tends to form sediment and must not be stored above 40 °C, homogenise before use.
INITIAL FORMULATION APPROACHES WITH GLUCOPON 650 EC
The component percentages below are illustrative laboratory starting points, not validated commercial recipes or BASF formulations. Percentages refer to raw materials as supplied and total 100.00 % in each example. Final component levels, pH, viscosity and preservation must be established through laboratory testing, balance any adjustments against the water fraction.
1. CONCENTRATED HAND DISHWASHING LIQUID
Illustrative initial components (% w/w):
Water: 53.99 %
SLES solution (70 % active): 25.00 %
Cocamidopropyl betaine solution (30 % active): 12.00 %
Glucopon 650 EC (as supplied): 7.00 %
Sodium chloride: 1.00 %
Citric acid solution (50 %), initial pH-adjustment allowance: 0.50 %
Suitable preservative system (as supplied): 0.20 %
Fragrance: 0.30 %
Water-soluble colour preparation: 0.01 %
Total: 100.00 %
The SLES and betaine levels contribute 17.50 % and 3.60 % active matter, respectively. Preservative, fragrance and colour levels are illustrative allowances, confirm supplier recommendations, compatibility and legal limits. Adjust acid and salt to the measured pH and viscosity targets.
Water, an anionic surfactant blend (for example SLES and LAS, about 15–20 % active in total), an amine oxide or betaine (about 3–5 % active) and Glucopon 650 EC at about 5–10 % as supplied. Adjust pH to about 6–8, thicken with sodium chloride, add fragrance, colour and preservative. Compare plate count, viscosity and low-temperature stability with the current formula.
2. LIQUID LAUNDRY DETERGENT FOR SENSITIVE SKIN
Illustrative initial components (% w/w):
Water: 74.80 %
Fatty alcohol ethoxylate (100 % active): 7.00 %
SLES solution (70 % active): 10.00 %
Glucopon 650 EC (as supplied): 5.00 %
Sodium citrate: 2.00 %
Liquid enzyme preparation (as supplied): 0.50 %
Suitable preservative system (as supplied): 0.20 %
Citric acid solution (50 %), initial pH-adjustment allowance: 0.50 %
Total: 100.00 %
The enzyme and preservative quantities are illustrative, select compatible preparations and confirm their suppliers' recommended use levels. Adjust acid against water to achieve the intended mildly alkaline pH. Suitability for sensitive skin must be demonstrated for the finished detergent and is not established by this example.
Combine a nonionic/anionic base (for example fatty alcohol ethoxylate and a mild anionic) with Glucopon 650 EC at about 3–8 %, add builder, enzymes and a preservative as required, and adjust to mildly alkaline pH. The APG blend supports wetting and oily soil removal and improves the mildness profile.
3. STREAK-FREE ALL-PURPOSE OR VEHICLE CLEANER
Illustrative initial components (% w/w):
Water: 93.00 %
Glucopon 650 EC (as supplied): 3.00 %
Suitable glycol ether solvent: 2.00 %
Sodium citrate: 2.00 %
Total: 100.00 %
Select a glycol ether compatible with the intended surfaces and applicable requirements. Assess pH and preservation during testing, any required pH adjuster or preservative must replace the corresponding water fraction. A streak-free claim must be verified on the target surfaces.
Use Glucopon 650 EC at about 1–5 % together with a small amount of solvent (for example a glycol ether) and a builder such as sodium citrate. Check drying behaviour on glass, painted surfaces and plastics, and adjust the Glucopon 650 EC level to balance foam and residue.
These levels are only starting points. Each formulation with Glucopon 650 EC must be optimised and tested for performance, stability, preservation and labelling.
HOW DOES GLUCOPON 650 EC WORK AT THE MOLECULAR LEVEL?
Glucopon 650 EC is a preservative-free aqueous solution of alkyl polyglucosides based on natural C8–C14 fatty alcohols. Its behaviour is shaped by two features working together: the glucose head group, which is non-ionic and strongly hydrated, and the relatively broad alkyl chain distribution, which mixes shorter and longer hydrophobic tails in one product.
Role of the glucose head group: The sugar unit carries several hydroxyl groups that bind water through hydrogen bonding. Because the head group has no charge, the surfactant is largely insensitive to water hardness and to electrolytes, and it can be combined with anionic, cationic and other non-ionic surfactants. The bulky, hydrated head also limits how strongly the molecule binds to skin proteins, which is the basis of the mild character associated with alkyl polyglucosides.
Role of the mixed chain length: The shorter C8–C10 chains diffuse quickly to newly formed surfaces and reduce surface tension within a short time, which supports fast wetting in spray and wipe applications. The longer C12–C14 chains pack more tightly at interfaces and inside micelles, contributing to oil uptake, foam stability and detergency. Combining both fractions gives a C8–C14 alkyl glucoside that balances rapid wetting with cleaning power.
Soil removal: At oily surfaces, molecules of the alkyl polyglucoside adsorb with their tails toward the soil and their glucose heads toward the water. This lowers oil–water interfacial tension, helps lift greasy deposits from the surface, and allows the detached oil to be taken up into micelles and held in the wash liquor instead of redepositing.
Hydrotropic effect: Alkyl polyglucosides with shorter chains act as hydrotropes. They insert between other surfactant molecules and disturb the formation of ordered liquid-crystalline phases, which helps keep concentrated, high-electrolyte or strongly alkaline formulations clear and pourable. For this reason, Glucopon 650 EC can support the solubility of other surfactants in heavy-duty and industrial cleaners.
Stability in alkaline media: The glycosidic linkage between the glucose unit and the fatty chain is stable at high pH. This chemical stability allows the C8–C14 alkyl glucoside to function in caustic cleaners and degreasers where many other surfactants lose solubility. Unlike ethoxylated non-ionics, alkyl polyglucosides do not show a typical cloud point under normal conditions, so heating the wash solution does not cause sudden phase separation.
Foam and interaction with anionics: Hydrogen bonding between neighbouring glucose heads creates a cohesive, hydrated film at bubble surfaces, which slows drainage and stabilises foam. In blends with anionic surfactants, the alkyl polyglucoside forms mixed micelles; these reduce the concentration of free anionic monomers, which lowers irritation potential, and can change micelle shape in a way that raises viscosity.
Low-temperature behaviour of the concentrate: Concentrated solutions of alkyl polyglucosides can thicken, turn hazy or partly crystallise when stored cold. This is a reversible physical rearrangement of the surfactant molecules; warming and stirring restore a homogeneous product.
Biodegradation: Microorganisms hydrolyse the glycosidic bond and then metabolise both the glucose unit and the fatty alcohol chain. Since both building blocks are common natural substances, alkyl polyglucosides of this type are regarded as readily biodegradable.
Wetting speed, foam, viscosity and cleaning performance in a finished product depend on the surfactant blend, electrolyte content, pH, temperature and the type of soil. Glucopon 650 EC dosage and formulation conditions should therefore be confirmed through laboratory trials.

- Shelf life: at least two years in the original packaging when stored properly and kept tightly sealed.
SAFETY OF GLUCOPON 650 EC
The nonionic sugar surfactant is a mild surfactant in diluted use, and BASF promotes it for dermatologically tested and sensitive-skin products. The concentrate, however, is an alkaline surfactant solution and must be handled with normal chemical precautions. Concentrated alkyl polyglucoside solutions of this type are typically classified as causing serious eye damage (Eye Dam. 1, H318).
Wear safety goggles, gloves and protective clothing when handling the concentrate. In case of eye contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water for several minutes, remove contact lenses and seek medical advice. After skin contact, wash off with water. If swallowed, rinse the mouth and drink water, do not induce vomiting. Spills are slippery and should be absorbed with inert material.
The aqueous APG solution is readily biodegradable (OECD 301), but the undiluted concentrate should not be released into drains or surface water.
The exact hazard classification and labelling of Glucopon 650 EC are given in the SDS, available on request from Ataman Kimya.
