GLUTARAL

CAS:    111-30-8
MF:    C5H8O2
MW:    100.12
EINECS:    203-856-5

Glutaral, C5H8O2 or OCH(CH₂)₃CHO, is a transparent oily, liquid with a pungent odor. Exposure to Glutaral may cause the following symptoms: throat and lung irritation, asthma and difficulty breathing, dermatitis, nasal irritation, sneezing, wheezing, burning eyes, and conjunctivitis.
Workers may be harmed from exposure to Glutaral.
Workers can be exposed to Glutaral through inhalation or skin contact.
The level of exposure depends upon the dose, duration, and work being done.
In material science Glutaral application areas range from polymers to metals and biomaterials.
Glutaral is commonly used as fixing agent before characterization of biomaterials for microscopy.
Glutaral is a powerful crosslinking agent for many polymers contain primer amine groups.
Glutaral also can be used for an interlinking agent to improve the adhesion force between two polymeric coatings.
Glutaral is also used to protect against corrosion of undersea pipes.
Glutaral solution, 50% w/w, may be used as a fixative for electron microscopy.
In the laboratory, Glutaral solution is commonly used as an amine-reactive homobifunctional crosslinker and as a disinfectant for medical equipment.
Glutaral may effectively crosslink amine and hydrazine derivatives to proteins and other amine-containing polymers; biotin hydrazides have been directly coupled to nucleic acids with Glutaral in a reaction that is potentially useful for conjugating fluorescent hydrazides and hydroxylamines to DNA.

Glutaral is used for a number of applications:

Disinfectant for surgical instruments that cannot be heat sterilized
A cross-linking and tanning agent
A biocide in metalworking fluids and in oil and gas pipelines
An antimicrobial in water-treatment systems
A slimicide in paper manufacturing
A preservative in cosmetics
A disinfectant in animal housing
A tissue fixative in histology and pathology labs
A hardening agent in the development of X-rays
In embalming solutions
In the preparation of grafts and bioprostheses
In various clinical applications

Glutaral is used as a cold sterilizingdisinfectant, as fixatives for tissues, in tanning, and in cross-linking proteins.
In oilfield chemicals, Glutaral can be used as a bactericide for water-based oil well fracturing fluid, a crosslinking agent for cellulose, etc.
Glutaral as a water treatment bactericide can be widely used in the circulating water system sterilization, can effectively control the number of microorganisms in various water systems, can effectively strip the biological slime and biofilm, the input amount is generally 50 to lOOmg/L.
Glutaral has the advantages of quaternary ammonium salt series bactericide, no foaming, easy to use, good compatibility with corrosion inhibitor.
In actual use, Glutaral is often used in combination with other drugs such as quaternary ammonium salts.
As a medication Glutaral is used to treat plantar warts.
For this purpose, a 10% w/v solution is used.
Glutaral dries the skin, facilitating physical removal of the wart.

Glutaral is also used in the treatment of hyperhidrosis under the control of dermatologists.
In people who have frequent sweating but do not respond to aluminum chloride.
Glutaral solution is an effective agent to treat palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis as an alternative to tannic acid and formaldehyde.
