Glycerol monooleate is commonly known as monoolein (MO).
Glycerol monooleate is an amphiphilic molecule that is made up of a glycerol backbone and a hydrocarbon chain.
Glycerol monooleate shows both inhibition and anti-inhibition action on the lipoprotein lipase mediated triglyceride hydrolysis.

Glycerol monooleate is a multi-functional, oil soluble emulsifier.
Glyceryl monooleate is prepared by esterification of commercial oleic acid that is derived either from edible sources or from tall oil fatty acids.
Glycerol monooleate is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) as a direct human food ingredient.

Glycerol monooleate does not dissolve in water, it has the characteristics of emulsification, thickening and anti foaming.
Glycerol monooleate is prepared by esterification of commercial oleic acid that is derived either from edible sources or fatty acids.
Glycerol monooleate is a synthetic, biodegradable amphiphilic, lipid compound with many applications.

Glycerol monooleate is a nonionic surfactant .
Glycerol monooleate is a very useful low HLB co-emulsifier for forming either oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions.

Glycerol monooleate (GMO) is a friction modifier that is used extensively in the lubricant industry.
Glycerol monooleate lubricates metal surfaces by being hydrolysed to oleic acid (OlH) which then adsorbs on to the surfaces.
Glycerol monooleate is reminiscent of an old model of steel surfaces being lubricated by fatty acids produced through hydrolysis of esters by small amounts of water.

Diamond-like carbon surfaces are lubricated by interaction with Glycerol monooleate in Glycerol monooleate's original form.
Glycerol monooleate is a non-ionic surfactant, and when dissolved in nonaqueous media, Glycerol monooleate is known to self-assemble into reverse micelles (RMs), with the polar head groups in the interior of the RM.

Recently, MD simulations have been used to examine the role of Glycerol monooleate RMs in modifying the frictional forces between sheared parallel mica surfaces.
With n-heptane as the base oil, preformed Glycerol monooleate RMs remain intact under both static and shear conditions, and lead to a slightly lower friction coefficient than if the Glycerol monooleate  molecules are adsorbed equally on both surfaces.

Glycerol monooleate may be hydrolysed at engine temperatures to form oleic acid and glycerol, and if oleic acid is not as good a friction modifier as Glycerol monooleate, then this could lead to a reduction in performance.
The hydrolysis of Glycerol monooleate was found that the product composition depends strongly on the water content and external conditions.

Aqueous potassium permanganate oxidises Glycerol monooleate to glycerol-1- o-nonanoic acid and nonanoic acid, although the necessary conditions for such oxidations are unlikely to occur in engines.
The range of possible products from hydrolysis of Glycerol monooleate , and Glycerol monooleate's subsequent breakdown, is bewildering.
