Hostapur OSB is a powdered anionic surfactant based on sodium C14-16 alpha olefin sulfonate (CAS No 68439-57-6) with an active content of about 90 %, used mainly as an air-entraining, wetting and plasticizing agent in cement-, lime- and gypsum-based dry mortars and plasters, and also as a foaming and wetting agent in foamed concrete, detergents, cleaners, textile and leather processing and agrochemical formulations.
The powdered AOS surfactant is valued in building materials because very small additions, typically in the range of a few hundredths of a percent on the dry mix, dissolve quickly in the mixing water, generate a fine and stable micro-foam and give mortars and plasters better workability, pumpability and frost resistance with less shrinkage cracking.
The anionic surfactant powder works at the air–water and solid–water interfaces: its sulfonate head groups and C14-16 hydrocarbon chains lower surface tension, wet cement and filler particles quickly and stabilize small air bubbles that remain trapped as uniformly distributed pores in the hardened mortar.

COMMON PRODUCT & CHEMICAL NAMES OF HOSTAPUR OSB:
Hostapur OSB, Hostapur OS Liquid, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Sodium Alpha Olefin Sulfonate, Sodium α-Olefin Sulfonate, Alpha Olefin Sulfonate, AOS, AOS Powder, Sodium (C14-16) Olefin Sulfonate, Sodium C14-16-Alkane Hydroxy and C14-16-Olefin Sulfonates, Sulfonic Acids, C14-16-Alkane Hydroxy and C14-16-Alkene, Sodium Salts, Alkenes, C14-16 alpha-, Sulfonated, Sodium Salts, Air-Entraining Agent for Dry Mortar, Mortar Foaming Agent
Hostapur OSB and Hostapur OS Liquid are Clariant trade names, the first is the powder grade, the second a liquid form of the same surfactant type. Sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate is the INCI name, and "sulfonic acids, C14-16-alkane hydroxy and C14-16-alkene, sodium salts" is the chemical (EINECS) description, which reflects that the product is a mixture of alkene sulfonates and hydroxyalkane sulfonates. AOS is the common industry abbreviation.
The air-entraining agent is an olefin sulfonate, not a sulfate. It should not be confused with sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate or linear alkylbenzene sulfonate, which are different anionic surfactants with different behavior in mortars and detergents. Other Hostapur grades (for example secondary alkane sulfonates) are also chemically different products.
WHAT IS HOSTAPUR OSB?
The air-entraining agent belongs to the group of alpha olefin sulfonates (AOS). These surfactants are produced by sulfonating linear alpha olefins, here with 14 to 16 carbon atoms, with sulfur trioxide, followed by neutralization and hydrolysis with sodium hydroxide. The result is a mixture of sodium alkene sulfonates and sodium hydroxyalkane sulfonates, sometimes with small amounts of disulfonates.
The aqueous AOS solution is then dried to a powder. The powdered AOS surfactant is supplied as a fine, white to slightly yellowish powder with about 90 % active matter. The remainder consists mainly of inorganic salts such as sodium sulfate and sodium carbonate/bicarbonate from the manufacturing process, plus a small amount of water.
Alpha olefin sulfonates combine good foaming, good wetting and good tolerance to hard water. They are more stable to hydrolysis than sulfate surfactants and are readily biodegradable. In construction chemistry, these properties make AOS one of the preferred chemistries for air entrainment in mineral binders.
The anionic surfactant powder is an industrial and technical grade. Its typical specification covers active content, water content, pH of a dilute solution, bulk density and limits for inorganic salts.
In dry mortar production, Hostapur OSB is one of the classic air-entraining agents. Added to factory-made plasters, renders, masonry mortars, adhesives and trowelling compounds, it introduces a controlled amount of air during mixing with water. The fine air bubbles act like tiny ball bearings, making the fresh mortar smoother, lighter, easier to spread and easier to pump. In hardened mortar, the pores interrupt capillaries, relieve internal stresses during drying and give room for ice to expand, which improves frost resistance and reduces cracking.
The powdered AOS surfactant also improves wetting. Dry mixes containing fine fillers or high levels of cellulose ether can be slow to wet and may form lumps or feel sticky. A small amount of Hostapur OSB speeds up wetting, reduces lump formation and lowers tackiness, which is especially useful in machine-applied plasters.
Outside the building industry, Hostapur OSB is a strong foaming and cleaning surfactant. Its powder form and low stickiness make it suitable for detergent powders, carpet and upholstery foam cleaners, and solid formulations such as tablets and agrochemical granules.
For dry mortar producers, Hostapur OSB offers a highly concentrated, easy-to-dose powder that dissolves fast, foams quickly and allows the air content of mortars to be adjusted precisely.
For applicators, mortars and plasters containing Hostapur OSB mix more easily, pump with less resistance, spread more smoothly and show fewer shrinkage cracks.
The anionic surfactant powder can be evaluated in cement and cement-lime plasters and renders, masonry mortars, gypsum plasters, tile and adhesive mortars, skim coats, foamed lightweight concrete, masonry cement, detergent powders, foam cleaners, textile and leather auxiliaries and agrochemical formulations.
CAS NO, EC / EINECS NO AND CHEMICAL IDENTIFICATION OF HOSTAPUR OSB
PRODUCT NAME: HOSTAPUR OSB
Chemical description: Sodium C14-16 alpha olefin sulfonate
INCI name: Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate
CAS No: 68439-57-6
EC / EINECS No: 270-407-8
Chemical class: Anionic surfactant, alpha olefin sulfonate (AOS)
Main functions: Air-entraining agent, wetting agent, plasticizing aid and foaming agent for mineral building materials, foaming and cleaning surfactant in detergents and cleaners, wetting agent in textile, leather and agrochemical formulations
Because Hostapur OSB is a UVCB substance (a mixture of homologs and isomers), it has no single molecular formula or molecular weight. Its performance depends on the C14/C16 chain distribution, the ratio of alkene to hydroxyalkane sulfonates, the active content and the salt content.
The substance sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate is listed in the US EPA inert ingredient exemptions for pesticide formulations under 40 CFR 180.920, and the INCI name is used in cosmetics. Hostapur OSB itself is an industrial grade intended for technical applications.
HOW DOES HOSTAPUR OSB WORK IN MORTARS AND PLASTERS?
WETTING
When water is added to a dry mortar, Hostapur OSB dissolves within seconds and lowers the surface tension of the mixing water. The water spreads more quickly over cement, lime, gypsum and filler particles, which reduces mixing time and lump formation.
AIR ENTRAINMENT
During mixing, air is folded into the mortar. Hostapur OSB molecules adsorb at the surface of these air bubbles with their hydrophobic chains in the air and their sulfonate groups in the water. This creates a negatively charged layer that stabilizes the bubbles and prevents them from merging. The result is a large number of small, evenly distributed air pores. Depending on the formulation, air contents in the range of roughly 20–35 % can be achieved in plasters.
PLASTICIZING EFFECT
The air bubbles reduce internal friction between particles. The mortar becomes softer and more plastic at the same water content, which improves spreading, troweling and pumping.
EFFECTS IN THE HARDENED MORTAR
The stable pore system interrupts continuous capillaries, reducing capillary water uptake and the tendency to efflorescence. During drying, the pores relieve stresses, which reduces shrinkage cracking. When water in the mortar freezes, the pores provide space for expansion, improving frost resistance.
REDUCTION OF TACKINESS
High levels of methylcellulose or other cellulose ethers can make plasters sticky. Hostapur OSB reduces this tackiness and makes the fresh mortar easier to work.
MAIN FUNCTIONS OF HOSTAPUR OSB IN BUILDING MATERIALS:
FAST WETTING OF DRY MIXES
Rapid formation of fine, stable micro-foam
Controlled air entrainment
Improved plasticity and workability
Improved pumpability of machine plasters
Lower density of fresh and hardened mortar
Reduced shrinkage and crack formation
Improved frost resistance
Reduced tendency to efflorescence
Reduced tackiness caused by cellulose ethers
Foaming agent for lightweight foamed concrete
DOSAGE OF HOSTAPUR OSB IN DRY MORTARS
Hostapur OSB is extremely efficient, so it is dosed at very low levels.
Typical addition levels: approx. 0.005–0.05 % by weight, calculated on the total dry mortar
Common range for plasters and renders: approx. 0.005–0.025 % by weight on the dry ingredients
At these levels, small weighing errors have a large effect on air content. For consistent production, Hostapur OSB is often pre-blended with a carrier or part of the filler before addition to the main mixer.
The optimum dosage depends on binder type and content, filler grading, cellulose ether type and level, other additives (for example dispersible polymer powders, defoamers, retarders), mixing equipment and mixing time. Too much air entrainment lowers compressive strength and adhesion, so the air content should be checked regularly in production.
IN WHICH SECTORS IS HOSTAPUR OSB USED?

WHICH PROBLEMS CAN HOSTAPUR OSB HELP SOLVE?
MORTARS THAT ARE HEAVY AND DIFFICULT TO APPLY
Air entrainment with Hostapur OSB makes mortars lighter and smoother, so they are easier to spread and trowel.
POOR PUMPABILITY OF MACHINE PLASTERS
Better plasticity and lower internal friction reduce pumping pressure and blockages.
SHRINKAGE CRACKS IN CEMENT AND CEMENT-LIME PLASTERS
The stable pore system reduces drying stresses and the risk of cracking.
FROST DAMAGE
Air pores provide room for ice formation, improving the frost resistance of hardened mortar.
EFFLORESCENCE
By interrupting capillary transport, Hostapur OSB can reduce the tendency of salts to migrate to the surface.
LUMPS AND SLOW WETTING
Fine dry mixes and mixes with high cellulose ether content wet faster and form fewer lumps with Hostapur OSB.

These benefits must be balanced against strength and adhesion requirements and confirmed in laboratory and site trials.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN USING HOSTAPUR OSB
The most common mistake with Hostapur OSB is over-dosing. Because the product is so effective, a small excess can entrain too much air, reducing compressive strength, bond strength and abrasion resistance.
POINTS TO CONSIDER:
DETERMINE THE DOSAGE IN LABORATORY TRIALS FOR EACH FORMULATION.
Pre-blend with a carrier or filler to ensure uniform distribution.
Measure fresh mortar air content and density regularly.
Check interactions with defoamers, dispersible polymer powders, cellulose ethers and retarders.
Adjust mixing time and mixer type consistently, since air content depends on mixing energy.
Check compressive and flexural strength and adhesion after curing.
Store the powder dry, it is hygroscopic and may cake.
Avoid dust formation and use local exhaust ventilation when handling the powder.
Take precautions against electrostatic charge and dust explosions when handling large quantities.
Concentrated alpha olefin sulfonate powders are irritating, particularly to the eyes. Dust should not be inhaled, and safety goggles, gloves and dust protection should be used during handling. For the hazard classification of Hostapur OSB, please contact Ataman Kimya.

HOSTAPUR OSB SIMILAR PRODUCTS AND ALTERNATIVES
HOSTAPUR OSB AND OTHER AOS PRODUCTS
Other sodium C14-16 alpha olefin sulfonates are available as powders and liquids. Active content, salt content and particle size can differ, which affects dosing and dissolution speed.
HOSTAPUR OSB AND SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE
Sodium lauryl sulfate is also used as an air-entraining and foaming agent. AOS-based Hostapur OSB generally offers better hydrolytic stability and good hard-water tolerance.
HOSTAPUR OSB AND VINSOL RESIN OR ROSIN-BASED AGENTS
Natural resin soaps are traditional air-entraining agents for concrete. They form different pore structures and are typically used in liquid concrete admixtures rather than in dry mortars.
HOSTAPUR OSB AND PROTEIN-BASED OR SYNTHETIC FOAM CONCENTRATES
For foamed concrete, protein-based foaming agents can give very stable foam, while synthetic agents such as AOS are easier to handle and more consistent.
HOSTAPUR OSB AND NON-IONIC WETTING AGENTS
Non-ionic surfactants can improve wetting with less air entrainment and may be preferred where high air content is not desired.
The best choice depends on the binder system, the required air content and the other additives used.
HOW DOES HOSTAPUR OSB WORK AT THE MOLECULAR LEVEL?
Hostapur OSB is a sodium olefin sulfonate, an anionic surfactant of the C14–16 alpha-olefin sulfonate type, supplied as a powder. It is produced by sulfonating linear alpha-olefins and then neutralising and hydrolysing the product, so the active matter is a mixture of two related structures: alkene sulfonates, which keep a double bond in the hydrocarbon chain, and hydroxyalkane sulfonates, which carry a hydroxyl group near the sulfonate head. Both share a C14–16 hydrophobic tail and a negatively charged sulfonate group, and the balance between them shapes how the surfactant behaves.
Adsorption at interfaces: In water, the sodium olefin sulfonate dissociates into sodium ions and surfactant anions. The hydrocarbon tails escape from water and accumulate at air–water and oil–water interfaces, while the charged sulfonate heads stay in the water phase. This orientation lowers surface and interfacial tension, so cleaning solutions wet fabrics, dishes and hard surfaces quickly and penetrate greasy soil.
Micelles and soil removal: Above a certain concentration, the anions assemble into micelles with a hydrophobic core. Oily and fatty soil loosened from a surface is taken up into these cores and held in the wash water. The negative charge on the micelle surface and on soil particles coated with surfactant causes mutual repulsion, which helps prevent redeposition on cleaned surfaces.
Role of the two structural components: The alkene sulfonate fraction is more hydrophobic and contributes strongly to surface activity and detergency. The hydroxyalkane sulfonate fraction, with its additional hydroxyl group, is more hydrophilic; it improves water solubility and tolerance to hardness ions. Together they give alpha-olefin sulfonates a broad, robust performance profile across different water conditions.
Hard water tolerance: Many anionic surfactants lose effectiveness in hard water because calcium and magnesium ions bind to their head groups and form poorly soluble salts. The calcium salts of olefin sulfonates are comparatively soluble, especially because of the hydroxyl-bearing fraction, so a larger share of the surfactant remains active. This helps maintain foam and cleaning power in hard water.
Chemical stability: In olefin sulfonates, the sulfur atom is bonded directly to carbon. This C–S bond does not hydrolyse under normal use, unlike the C–O–S linkage of alkyl sulfates and ether sulfates, which can split in acidic or hot conditions. As a result, Hostapur OSB remains stable over a wide pH range, from acidic toilet cleaners to alkaline hard surface and laundry products.
Foam formation: At bubble surfaces, the anions pack into a charged film. Electrostatic repulsion between the two charged layers of a foam lamella slows thinning and drainage, while the packed tails provide surface elasticity. This produces a rich, stable foam, which is valued in hand dishwashing and other consumer cleaning products.
Low viscosity build-up: Some anionic surfactants form elongated, worm-like micelles when salt is added, which strongly thickens the product. Olefin sulfonates of this type show a low tendency to build viscosity, because the mix of chain structures and hydrophilic groups favours smaller, more spherical micelles. This allows concentrated formulations to remain pourable and makes it easier to formulate clear, low-viscosity cleaners.
Interaction with other surfactants: In blends with non-ionic or amphoteric surfactants, the olefin sulfonate forms mixed micelles. Non-ionic molecules reduce repulsion between neighbouring sulfonate heads, which lowers the concentration needed to form micelles and improves grease removal. Amphoteric surfactants such as betaines can additionally improve mildness and foam quality.
Behaviour in the environment: Linear alpha-olefin sulfonates are built on unbranched chains, which microorganisms can break down through normal oxidation pathways. This linear structure supports good biodegradability.
Cleaning, foaming and viscosity behaviour depend on concentration, water hardness, pH, temperature, electrolyte level and the other surfactants and additives in the formulation. Hostapur OSB dosage and formulation conditions should therefore be confirmed through laboratory trials.
