Sodium C14-17 Alkyl Sec Sulfonate. Hostapur® SAS 60 by Clariant acts as a detergent base and surfactant.
It has good wetting properties and high degreasing effect. Hostapur® SAS 60 finds application in formulating bubble baths, shower gels, shampoos and personal care cleaning products.

HOSTAPUR SAS-60 (60% active), Sodium C14 – 17 Alkyl sec. Sulfonate is an anionic, biodegradable surfactant for the detergent industry.

environmentally friendly anionic surfactants based on secondary alkane sulfonate sodium salt for detergent, chemical-technical and cosmetic industries, starting product: n-paraffins.

Sulfoxidation, a fundamental reaction in aliphatic organic chemistry, was discovered as early as 1940 by C. Platz at the Höchst site of the old IG Farben AG 7 when n-paraffins were treated with sulfur dioxide and oxygen and simultaneously exposed to ultraviolet light.
The process has since evolved into the current Hoechst light/water process 8 – 11, which can be summarized by the following equation:
R–H + 2SO2 + O2 + H2O → RSO3H + H2SO4 Substitution is largely done in methylene groups; terminal methyl groups are significantly less reactive.
Smaller amounts of di- and polysulfonates are formed as well as monosulfonates, cf. Technical data.

Due to their distinctive surface activities and specific properties, they have a wide range of uses.
Its main uses are dishwashing liquids, which Hostapur SAS has proven to be quite successful for over three decades.
Hostapur SAS grades are used as the main surfactants in combination with other surfactants for the manufacture of almost all types of detergents and cleaners for household and industrial use.

Of the numerous possibilities for combining Hostapur SAS with surfactants of a different chemical nature, two-, three-, and four-component combinations are described below by way of example; These blends enable the development of dishwashing liquids with tailor-made properties.
Skin compatibility and foaming power can be optimized by combining Hostapur SAS and alkyl ether sulfate, eg ®Genapol LRO or ZRO.
Hostapur SAS 60 has proven successful when a mixture of about 3 to 4 parts Hostapur SAS and about one part alkyl ether sulfate is based on 100% active ingredient (3:1 or 4:1).
This combination also enables the formulation of liquid concentrates with about 40% active detergent content without the use of an additional solvent.
Also, with this concentration, the mixture of Hostapur SAS and alkyl ether sulfate dissolves better and faster in dishwater than the individual components.
Stability against hard water and foaming power in hard water are also optimized by the alkyl ether sulfate content.
By adding magnesium ions or other divalent metal ions to Hostapur
SAS: a mixture of alkyl ether sulfates, the foaming power can be further improved, especially in the extremely low water hardness range.
A very important parameter for the processing and use of dishwashing liquids is rheology.
Commercially available products have a viscosity of about 400 to 700 mPas/20°C.
This viscosity is easily achieved with 5% to 7% sodium chloride in Hostapur.
SAS: Mixtures of alkyl ether sulfates at a ratio of 70:30 to 100% active detergent and
12 to 15% active detergent content in the final formulation.
Higher concentrated Hostapur
SAS: Alkyl ether sulfate blends with 40% active detergent content can be easily adjusted to suitable viscosities for practical purposes by adding viscosity reducing additives such as ethanol and/or urea as shown in the figure.

Liquid detergents are an important area of application for Hostapur SAS due to their distinctive detergent properties.
Liquid detergents are divided below into light-duty liquids for delicate washing and heavy-duty liquid detergents.
Hostapur SAS 60 USA, these heavy duty liquid detergents are more important than Europe.
US liquid detergents contain between 10% and 30% active surfactant.
Builder systems used in liquid products (eg citrate, silicates) are typically less effective than those used in powder detergents (eg layered silicate, zeolite, polycarboxylate, carbonate).
In the USA, washing machines are designed differently from those in Europe, and washing temperatures are lower, typically between 5 and 40°C.
US liquid detergent formulations typically do not contain any bleaching agents as they are poorly stable in these systems.
Liquid detergents used in Hostapur SAS 60 Europe have a different structure.
They generally consist of a mixture of anionic and nonionic surfactants in approximately the same ratio as soap.
Addition of Hostapur SAS 60 contains solvents such as ethanol, propylene glycol and/or xylene sulfonate, possibly enzymes, optical brighteners and chelating agents.
Guide Formulations are available.
Hostapur SAS offers better enzymes if formulations use enzymes
More compatibility than most anionic surfactants such as linear alkyl benzene sulfonate or alkyl sulfate.
Significant solvent savings, such as ethanol, can be achieved when Hostapur SAS 60 in combination with dishwashing liquids is used instead of Hostapur SAS as the main surfactant, eg linear alkyl benzene sulfonate.
Optimum builder-free liquid detergents contain as main ingredients Hostapur SAS, ethoxylated fatty alcohols and alkyl ether sulfates that are easily dissolved in water, as well as neutralized coconut soap.
25 If builders are also included in liquid detergents, it is advantageous to use freely soluble surfactants such as Hostapur SAS.
Another beneficial feature of Hostapur SAS is its electrolyte compatibility, in other words good compatibility with builders.
Liquid mild detergents are used at temperatures up to a maximum of 60°C.
As the main surfactant, Hostapur SAS can be combined with alkyl ether sulfates, nonionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants and/or soap in amounts up to 40%.
Another possibility to formulate with Hostapur SAS is to develop highly viscous to gel-like detergents with special rheological properties in use.
Hostapur SAS allows high surfactant concentration and rapid dissolution in use.
Looking to the future, liquid detergents will undoubtedly soon take a larger share of the detergent market in Europe.
Hostapur SAS 60 is especially applicable to products with an active detergent content of 50 percent or more.
Thus, they meet the requirements of low energy production, high efficiency, easy low measurement and environmental friendliness.
With Hostapur SAS, detergents with high active ingredient concentrations can be developed without difficulty.

Hostapur SAS 60 consists of sodium petroleum sulfonate, water and a small amount of sodium sulfate and paraffin. It will be used in the manufacture of detergents and cleaners as specified in your literature.

HTS subtitle applicable to Hostapur SAS 60 is the United States Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) providing organic surfactants (other than soap); Surface-active preparations, washing preparations (including washing auxiliary preparations) and soap, other than those of heading 3401, whether or not containing: organic surfactants (whether or not ready for retail sale): anionic: other: other.

to store
Hostapur SAS 60 splits in storage into two phases, one containing more surfactant than the other. In addition, sodium sulfate can separate at fairly low temperatures.
Therefore, Hostapur SAS 60 is required to continuously agitate or pump the tank contents to maintain a storage temperature of 65–90 °C.
If a circulation pump is used, the entrainment of air must be prevented by the proper design of the return pipe.

The demands placed on surfactants have changed over the past few decades.
Not only can an optimum price-performance ratio be expected, but also safety and environmental impact are paramount considerations.
The secondary alkane sulfonate Hostapur SAS 60 meets these requirements in every respect.
This surfactant has been very successful on the market for many years.
To date, over one million metric tons of Hostapur SAS have been produced at our European facilities.
One of the reasons for this great success is the improved environmental characteristics, as demonstrated by the life cycle assessment.
We believe that Hostapur SAS 60 will continue to maintain and expand its position as one of the leading essential surfactants in the coming decades.

emulsion polymerization
Secondary alkane sulfonates have been used successfully for decades in the emulsion polymerization of vinyl chloride. Hostapur SAS has proven successful as an emulsifier in both continuous and discontinuous processes and for stabilization of latex after polymerization by the nucleation process; In the second process, the polymerization is carried out with only a low concentration of emulsifier and the dispersion is then stabilized by adding suitable emulsifiers.
Hostapur SAS is known for its good dispersibility, which is evidenced by the latex's good stability to mechanical stress and good process control (little propensity for deposit formation in the reaction vessel).
Due to the absence of double bonds, the emulsifier does not act as a radical blocker. This provides an easily reproducible reaction course and results in end products with good heat stability due to lower demand for persulfate (radical forming agent) and lower tendency to block polymerization (no reaction between emulsifier and reaction partners).
The low salt content of Hostapur SAS also has a positive effect on the heat stability of the final product.

Soaps (oily soaps, resin soaps) are generally used in the manufacture of butadiene copolymers, butadienestyrene and butadiene-acrylonitrile lattices. The advantage of soaps over synthetic anionic emulsifiers is that the polymer can be precipitated by acidification or salt addition, and the remaining fatty or resin acid in the product also acts as a plasticizer. A distinct disadvantage of soaps is the instability of latex (coagulation at slight changes in pH and contamination, low resistance to fillers) and poorer chemical and heat stability. For these reasons, synthetic emulsifiers are gaining more and more ground, especially for specialty products, for example carboxylated butadiene copolymers (for carpet backing, papermaking, adhesives, etc.). Due to its stable quality and low salt content, Hostapur SAS is well suited for this application.

Textile and leather auxiliaries
Thanks to its chemical stability and very good wetting effect, Hostapur SAS can be used in the manufacture of synthetic fibers and in the finishing of textile fibers, for example as an antistatic agent.
30 Other uses of secondary alkane sulfonate are the washing, mercerizing and carbonization of cotton and the preparation of leather oils.

oilfield chemicals
Hostapur SAS is also successfully used in tertiary recovery of petroleum.

Advantages of Hostapur SAS for specialized technical sectors
Excellent antistatic effect for polyethylene, polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride
High foam stability and fast foaming power with co-surfactants
Good emulsifier for emulsion polymerization in continuous and discontinuous processes
High wetting effect in textile and leather auxiliaries for the production and finishing of textile fibers
