HYDRAZINE HYDRATE

EC / List no.: 616-584-0
CAS no.: 7803-57-8
Mol. formula: H6N2O

Hydrazine is highly toxic unless handled in solution as, for example, hydrazine hydrate (NH2NH2 · xH2O). As of 2015, the world hydrazine hydrate market amounted to $350 million.
Hydrazine is mainly used as a foaming agent in preparing polymer foams, but applications also include its uses as a precursor to polymerization catalysts, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals, as well as a long-term storable propellant for in-space spacecraft propulsion.

About two million tons of hydrazine hydrate were used in foam blowing agents in 2015.
Additionally, hydrazine is used in various rocket fuels and to prepare the gas precursors used in air bags.
Hydrazine is used within both nuclear and conventional electrical power plant steam cycles as an oxygen scavenger to control concentrations of dissolved oxygen in an effort to reduce corrosion

The addition of hydrazine hydrate to reduced graphene oxide (RGO) counter electrode improves its performance in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC).

Application
Hydrazine hydrate may be used to prepare:
 3-(2-Benzyloxy-6-hydroxyphenyl)-5-styrylpyrazoles by reacting with 5-benzyloxy-2-styrylchromones.

It may also be used in the catalytic reduction of nitroarenes to aromatic amines.

Hydrazine hydrate has been used for the deproteination of the enamel samples in a study. It may be used as a reducing agent in the following:

Chemical Properties
 colourless fuming liquid

Physical properties
Colorless fuming liquid; faint odor; refractive index 1.4284; density 1.032g/mL; boils at 119°C; solidifies at -51.7°C; miscible with water and alcohol;insoluble in chloroform, methylene chloride, and ether.

Uses:
Hydrazine hydrate is used as a reducing agent in synthetic and analytical reactions and as a solvent for many inorganic compounds.
Hydrazine hydrate also is used with methanol as a propellant for rocket engines.
Another application is catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide.

Preparation
Hydrazine hydrate is prepared by treating hydrazine sulfate, N2H4•H2SO4 with sodium hydroxide.
The product is collected by distillation under nitrogen.
Hydrazine hydrate also is obtained as a by-product in the Bayer Ketazine process for producing hydrazine in which hydrazine solution is hydrolysed under pressure in a ketazine column.

General Description
A colorless fuming liquid with a faint ammonia-like odor.
Corresponds to a 64% aqueous solution of hydrazine in water.
Combustible but may require some effort to ignite.
Contact with oxidizing materials may cause spontaneous ignition.
Toxic by inhalation and by skin absorption.
Corrosive to tissue.
Produces toxics oxides of nitrogen during combustion.

Air & Water Reactions
Fumes in air. Water soluble.

Reactivity Profile
Hydrazine hydrate is a base and a very powerful reducing agent.
Very corrosive.
Violent reaction on contact with alkali metals (sodium, potassium), 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene, tin dichloride, mercury oxide.
Vigorous neutralization reaction with acids.
Emits toxic fumes of nitrogen oxides when heated to decomposition.
Reacts with tin(II) chloride to give tin(II) dihydrazine chloride, which decomposes explosively when heated.
Reacts exothermically and violently with 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene.

Purification Methods
Hydrazine hydrate is best obtained by heating hydrazine sulphate (200g), NaOH (160g) and H2O (75mL, exothermic) in a copper flask under reflux for 1.5hours then distilled off (using a flame to remove all the hydrazine).
The distillate (175mL) is a clear liquid which contains ~40-45% of N2H4.
Note that hydrazine attacks glass, rubber and cork, and stainless steel equipment should be used.
The percentage of hydrazine is determined by titration with standard acid (methyl orange indicator) or against standard iodine (starch indicator).
Hydrazine monohydrate should contain 64% of N2H4. The ~40-45% solution may be concentrated by mixing it (144mL) with xylene (230mL) and distilling it through an efficient fractionating column (e.g. Hempel column, p 10).
All the xylene passes over with about 85mL of H2O.
On distilling the residue, hydrated hydrazine (50mL) is obtained containing 80-85% of N2H4.
This can be diluted with conductivity H2O to 64% N2H4 to give the monohydrate.
Hydrazine and its hydrates have VERY IRRITATING and TOXIC vapours and should be used in an efficient fume cupboard.

Hydrazine Hydrate used as a reactant in the cyclizations of pyridinones.
Hydrazine hydrate is also used in the study of nanocrystal semiconductors, participating in the functionalization and passivation of surface states.
Hydrazine hydrate is widely used as a reducing agent or an intermediate of synthesis in various industrial sectors like water treatment (effluents, industrial boilers), chemical treatment process (metals, mine extraction) or active ingredients synthesis (pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals).

Hydrazine Hydrate is widely used as a reducing agent or an intermediate of synthesis in various industrial sectors like:

- water treatment (effluents, industrial boilers)
- chemical treatment process (metals, mine extraction)
- active ingredients synthesis (pharmaceutcials and agrochemicals).

Hydrazine Hydrate is marketed as a water-based solution at different hydrazine concentration.
Desoxidant for boiler descaling, upstream product of Methylhydrazine, good reductant in electroplating, insect growth regulator.
Hydrazine derivatives are used in the manufacture of herbicides and fungicides, as well as plant growth regulators.
From tranquilizers to the primary drug for controlling tuberculosis, hydrazine derivatives have proven to be effective ingredients for a number of pharmaceuticals.

Used as an oxygen scavenger in boiler water, Scav-Ox® 35% hydrazine solution reduces oxidation in both low and high pressure steam systems.
In fact, hydrazine is the best material that can be used for protection against oxidation in super critical boilers operating at pressures up to 3500 psi.

Currently, the plastics industry uses hydrazine derivatives in the creation of blowing agents and polymerization initiators.
Use of these derivatives is also being investigated for the formulation of polymers.

Terminology
Hydrazine solution strength is usually given as the percent contained hydrazine.
However, when hydrazine and water are mixed, a monohydrate (N2H4.H20) is formed through hydrogen bonding.
Therefore, the amount of hydrazine in a solution can also be designated as the percentage of hydrazine monohydrate.
There is a simple relationship between the two designations, based on their molecular weights.

Hydrazine has a molecular weight of 32 and the monohydrate has a molecular weight of 50.
The ratio of their weight is 32/50 or 0.64.
Therefore, 100% monohydrate would contain 32/50 or 64% hydrazine.
This is the reason 100% hydrazine hydrate can be used interchangeably with 64% contained hydrazine by weight.

To avoid confusion caused by dual terminology, Arch always expresses hydrazine content in terms of contained hydrazine.
Since other companies may not follow this convention, users should ascertain which terminology applies when reference to hydrazine solution concentration is involved.
