Product description
Esaflor types are quaternized guars and hydroxypropyl guars.
Quaternized guars are recommended for conditioning in shampoos, bath & shower applications.
They also reduce the irritation potential of surfactants and are available in different degrees of substitution.

Hydroxypropyl guars provide thickening and filmforming properties, also suitable for thickening and stabilizing of emulsions.
Synergistic effect with Xanthan Gum and Acrylate Polymers.
Hydroxypropyl guar is a natural thickener, usually appearing as a white powder, derived from guar gum.
Guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba) is a domesticated legume crop, with most of of the world's production in India.
Cultivated plants grow to around 1 meter tall, with hairy stems and leaves. The leaves, seed pods and seeds are all known to be edible, and are often cooked in curries.
Harvested seeds or 'guar beans' are dehusked, roasted, hydrated and ground to produce guar gum.

Guar gum is composed of sugars that make it a cold-soluble thickening agent.
Guar gum, 2-hydroxypropyl ether is used to thicken many foods and personal care products, and is a cheaper plant-derived alternative to locust bean gum, which requires greater amounts to achieve the same level of viscosity.
Hydroxypropyl guar is produced by reacting propylene glycol with guar gum, which improves its solubility and stability.

What is Hydroxypropyl guar?
Hydroxypropyl guar is a non-ionic polymer.
As the name suggests, it is obtained from naturally occurring guar beans.
Guar gum, 2-hydroxypropyl ether comes as fine yellow powder.
The process of isolating hydroxypropyl guar includes first galactomannan, polysaccharide of guar beans seeds is isolated with some heat and mechanical method, then it is reacted with propylene in presence of NaOH, as a catalyst.

Uses:
Guar gum, 2-hydroxypropyl ether is just like a parent plant helps increase viscosity of a product.
Guar gum, 2-hydroxypropyl ether works over a wide pH range. It can be used in sprayable products as well to increase viscosity.
The film-forming capability of this molecule helps dry hair and skin recover faster.
Moisture gets locked within the skin because of this film, as a result skin becomes smoother and well lubricated.
Guar gum, 2-hydroxypropyl ether can help stabilize emulsions. Especially when there are varieties of ingredients in any products used, the stability of the product due to unrequired interactions becomes an issue.
In that case the hydroxypropyl guar remains stable over wide pH range, presence of salt and alcohol.
Guar gum, 2-hydroxypropyl ether is used to form skin creams, lotions, hair care products, gels, and make-up.

Hydroxypropyl-Guar (HP-Guar, Inactive Ingredient)
Guar gum is a high molecular weight, natural polysaccharide derived from the guar bean
Guar gum, 2-hydroxypropyl ether's ability to form a viscous solution at low concentration makes it an attractive option as a thickening and viscosity agent in a wide range of industrial products.
For ophthalmic use, HPguar is used in a rigid gas permeable contact lens solution and in SYSTANE® artificial tears.

Chemistry and Properties
Like guar gum, HP-guar is a polysaccharide composing of a linear backbone of mannose units and side chains consisting of galactose units, with a 2:1 ratio of mannose:galactose.
However, HP-guar is a chemically-modified guar designed to improve heat stability of guar, with minimal effect on the crosslinking potential with metal ions, including tetra-hydroxyborate .
A borate anion condenses onto one galactose unit, converting nonionic HP-guar into an anionic HP-guar.
Through this mechanism, the borate can crosslink two separate HP-guar segments and increases solution viscosity, giving rise to gels.
This HP-guar/borate interaction transforms a lowviscosity liquid to a shear-thinning gel, and occurs between pH 7 and 8.5 Functionally, HP-guar acts as a gelling agent and mimics the mucin layer of the tear film.
Guar gum, 2-hydroxypropyl ether has been shown to have good lubricity by demonstrating excellent drag reduction.

Application of Hydroxypropyl Guar Gum (HPG)
Guar gum, 2-hydroxypropyl ether is a galactomannan polysaccharide that is extracted from guar beans.
Guar gum, 2-hydroxypropyl ether has thickening & stabilizing properties and hence finds numerous application in the food, feed, and industries.
Hydroxypropyl Guar Gum, also known as HPG, is formed by the etherification reaction with non-ionic propylene oxide reagent with guar gum.
This modification of guar gum severely improves its properties, like- alkaline stability, hydrophobicity, solubility, biostability, etc.
Guar gum, 2-hydroxypropyl ether is thus deemed suitable for construction applications.

BACKGROUND
Hydroxypropyl guar (HPG) is commonly used as a thickener of hydraulic fracturing fluid.
Guar gum, 2-hydroxypropyl ether is also used as an inert ingredient as a thickener in pesticide formulations applied to growing crops only; as an indirect food additive; and, as a sizing agent in textiles/papers.
The substance is a propylene glycol ether derivative of guar gum.
Guar gum is a resinous material derived from milled endosperm from guar beans of the legume Cyamopsis tetragonolobus.
Structurally, Guar gum, 2-hydroxypropyl ether is a galactomannan (high molecular weight carbohydrate polymer) consisting of a main chain of D-mannose with a side chain of D-galactose at approximately every second mannose unit.
The mannose units are β-(l-4) linked, and the single D-galactose units are joined to the main chain by α-(1-6) linkages.
Hydroxypropyl guar is readily biodegradable and is not expected to bioaccumulate.
Based on Guar gum, 2-hydroxypropyl ether's high molecular weight and polysaccharide structure, the substance would be expected to be of low acute and chronic toxicity to aquatic organisms.

PHYSIO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Hydroxypropyl guar is a white to yellow fine powder that is very slightly soluble in water.
Guar gum, 2-hydroxypropyl ether is a polysaccharide comprised of a polymannose backbone with mono-galactose pendent groups (whereby the mannose:galactose ratio is 2:1), derivatized via ether linkages with propylene glycol, at some of the free hydroxyl groups of the polysaccharide backbone
Hydroxypropyl guar is a slightly modified form of guar gum.
Guar gum's polymeric structure contains numerous hydroxyl groups, which can be treated to form propylene glycol ethers, resulting in hydroxypropyl guar gum.
As is the case with the hydroxypropyl derivatives of cellulose and methylcellulose, this modification has an impact upon the viscosifying properties of the polymer (which makes it more desirable for certain commercial applications) but does not increase toxicological concerns
