ICHTHYOL

CAS NUMBER: 1340-06-3

EC NUMBER: 215-671-7

Ichthyol has a softening, soothing, mild antiseptic and abscess maturing feature as a skin care product.
Ichthyol helps the main treatment in the wound care of cattle, sheep, horses and dogs by removing the oily crust, dry crust and follicle crusts formed on their skin.
Ichthyol relieves itching and accelerates the treatment of animals by maturing abscesses quickly.
Ichthyol is applied as an emollient on the skin of the breasts in mastitis.

Ichthyols active ingredient is ichthyol.
Ichthyol can be used as a local antiseptic or in the treatment of inflammatory diseases.
Ichthyol exhibits anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.
Ichthyol shows good tolerance, multilateral application, reduces dandruff, is effective against skin impurities, reduces irritations and itching and reduces excessive sebum production.

Ichthyol is used in anti-dandruff shampoos, clear and pearly luster effect formulations, cream rinses, hair coloring and perms.
Ichthyol is also used in body lotions, after showering, after shaving, after depilating, facial care (pimples), cleansing milks, cream, after tanning- and after sun-products.
Ichthyol has high grade active ingredients, decades of experience and highest quality standards have made our independent, family-owned pharmaceutical company to one of the most important suppliers of therapeutics in dermatology and orthopaedics.
Ichthyol has the distinction of being manufacturer of own active ingredients made from natural oil shale rock.

For this purpose oil shale rock with a high content of sulphur that is indispensable for efficacy is exploited in our mine in France in a sophisticated system of underground chambers.
Ichthyol is a product of natural origin obtained in the first step by dry distillation of sulfur-rich oil shale.
By sulfonation of the resulting oil, and subsequent neutralization with ammonia, Ichthyol results as a viscous, water-soluble substance with a characteristic bitumen-like odor.
Ichthyol is used in medicine (sometimes in combination with zinc oxide) as a treatment for different skin diseases, including eczema and psoriasis.

Ointments containing 10% or 20% Ichthammol are most common.
Ichthyols are sometimes called "black ointments" or "drawing salves".
Though Ichthyol is naturally present at the skin level, in some cases Ichthyol can excessively multiply.
Ichthyols bring to normal levels the sebum secretion, as well as the renewal rate of epidermal cells at the scalp level, eliminating the unpleasant and unaesthetic effects of dandruff.
Ichthyol can be also used to improve more unpleasant problems, such as seborrheic dermatitis.
Ichthyols revolutionary formula is based on ingredients such as Piroctone Olamine, an essential anti-fungal solution in fighting dandruff, ichthyol, with anti-inflammatory and anti-septic properties, and Pro-Vitamin B5, which maintains an optimum hydration both of the scalp and of the hair.

Ichthyol creates unfavorable conditions for the spread of the microorganisms and forces dirt out to the surface, thus preventing the formation of unwanted and painful acne in the deeper layers of the skin.
Ichthyol strengthens the skin’s natural protective barrier and stimulates its regeneration processes without causing allergic reactions.
Ichthyol has high permeability and the ability to regulate moisture balance and mechanisms related to the sebaceous gland’s activity, as well as skin regeneration processes.
Ichthyol enhances the effect of other active ingredients, helping them penetrate the deeper layers of the skin.

Ichthyol is used for the treatment of boils and skin infections (cysts) in various animals.
Ichthyol is an anti-microbial.
Ichthyol is a dark sulfonated shale oil obtained via the sulfation and ammoniation of a mineral deposit distillate (shale oil).
Ichthyols various constituents include saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, nitrogen bases, acids, and thiophene derivatives.

USAGE:

Ichthyol is for external use. Before using Royal Ichthyol Pomade, the area to be applied should be washed with soap and water and dried.
Ichthyol is applied as a thin layer several times a day for 3-4 days.
Ichthyol is repeated when necessary.

-Human:

Ichthyols are classified as local therapeutic agents with very good tolerability.
Ichthammol does not have any corrosive properties on the skin.
Ichthyol should not be confused with “black ointment” or “drawing salve.”
The latter are typically ichthammol-containing ointments used for skin conditions including psoriasis and eczema.

They are not meant to be escharotics.
Pharmacologically, Ichthammol has anti-inflammatory, bactericidal, and fungicidal properties.
Ichthyol is used to treat a variety of skin disorders.
In otology, a mixture of glycerol and ichthammol is used for the topical treatment of ear infections.

Ichthyol is effective against Gram-positive bacteria.
The anti-inflammatory action is explained by its influence on the formation, secretion, and effect of inflammation mediators.
Ichthammol is available in pharmacies for compounding medications.
Different sources of information exist for exemplary formulations.

According to the "list of preferred Specials" by the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) Ichthammol can be used in dermatology prescribing to treat acutely inflamed atopic eczema, among others.
A corresponding recommendation exists for bituminosulfonates in Germany.
According to “guideline atopic eczema” bituminosulfonates can be considered for treatment of atopic eczema based on general clinic experience.
In the European Dermatology Forum (EDF) guidelines for treatment of atopic eczema Ichthammol is recommended as a useful addition to the basic treatment regimen, especially in mild disease or if TCS treatment is not possible from a patient’s perspective, e.g. corticophobia.

COMPOSITION:

From elemental analysis, the composition of Ichthammol was calculated to be C28H36S5O6(NH4)2.
However, as a product of natural origin, Ichthyol is a mixture of many different compounds.
Chemically, Ichthyol is a sulfonated shale oil that is incompatible with acids, alkali carbonates or hydrates and alkaloidal salts.
Ichthyol is a thick reddish brown liquid, possessing a bituminous odor and taste.
Ichthyol is soluble in water and miscible with glycerin, but is nearly insoluble in strong alcohol or concentrated ether.
Ichthyol contains a large percentage of organically combined sulfur.
