EC / List no.: 201-375-5
CAS no.: 81-77-6
Mol. formula: C28H14N2O4

Indanthrone blue blue, also called indanthrene, is an organic dye made from 2-aminoanthraquinone treated with potassium hydroxide in the presence of a potassium salt.
Indanthrone blue is a pigment that can be used in the following mediums: acrylic, alkyd, casein, encaustic, fresco, gouache, linseed oil, tempera, pastel, and watercolor painting.
Indanthrone blue is used to dye unmordanted cotton and as a pigment in quality paints and enamels.
As a food dye, Indanthrone blue has E number E130, but it is not approved for use in either the United States or the European Union.

Indanthrone blue was the first example of the brand "Indanthren" (an acronym for Indigo from anthracene) introduced by BASF in 1901.
One coincidental result is that even now, in Japan vat dyes are commonly described as thren(e) dyes (スレン染料), derived from the Japanese transliteration of the brand.

Properties
Indanthrone blue has the appearance of blue needles with metallic luster and melting point of 470–500 °C.
Indanthrone blue has excellent light fastness, but may bleed in some organic solvents.

Chemical Properties
blue needles with a metallic lustre

Uses:
Mainly to dye cotton.
Indanthrone (Pigment Blue 60) functions as a blue pigment or as a dye.
Dinaphtho[2,3-a:2'',3''-h]phenazine-5,9,14,18(6H,15H)-tetraone is a pigment; used in preparation of Polyethylene composite material for outdoor building materials.

Preparation
(a) in potassium nitrate, LvSuanJia, glucose or organic acid salt (such as formic acid potassium or acetic acid potassium or the mixture of both) under the existence of, with potassium hydroxide treatment 2-Aminoanthracene-9,10-dione;
Definition    A blue vat dye or pigment.
The molecule consists of two anthraquinone nuclei linked through two –NH groups.

General Description
Blue needles with a metallic luster or fine fluffy deep blue powder.

Properties and Applications
red light blue.
Slightly soluble in chloroform (heat), o-chlorophenol,Quinoline, insoluble in acetic acid, acetone, ethanol, pyridine, toluene, xylene.
The strong sulfuric acid for brown, after diluted blue precipitation.
In alkaline insurance powder solution for blue, acidic solutions for the red light in blue. And C.I. Vat Blue 4, C.I. Pigment Blue 60 the same chemical structure.

Indanthrone blue appears as blue needles with a metallic luster or fine fluffy deep blue powder.

Indanthrone Blue, one of the least known or popular blues is the darkest valued pigment available next to Black Pbk6.
There have been suggestions it is gaining more supporters and certainly all the main manufacturers include it in their ranges.
The main criticism is that it is dull.
Indanthrone blue can also dry much lighter, up to 50% according to Handprint.
