KRONITEX KP-140

Kronitex KP-140 is a liquid plasticizer and functional additive chemically based on Tris(2-butoxyethyl) Phosphate, in the phosphate ester class. This compound, identified by CAS No 78-51-3, is also known by the abbreviation Kronitex KP-140 and can be used as a plasticizer, viscosity regulator, solvent or foam control auxiliary in resins, synthetic rubbers, plastics, lacquers, plastisols, floor polishes and different technical formulations.
In the molecule of Kronitex KP-140, the central phosphate group is surrounded by three 2-butoxyethyl ester chains. This structure brings together the polar character of the phosphate ester and the organic phase compatibility of the butoxy-ethyl segments in the same molecule.
Kronitex KP-140 is chemically different from conventional phthalate plasticizers. The molecule's phosphorus inclusion affects its flammability behavior and thermal properties, while the ether and alkyl segments can provide compatibility with various organic polymers and low-temperature flowability.
Kronitex KP-140 has historically been widely used, especially in floor polish and coating systems. Its low volatility and ability to remain in the film phase can help regulate the flexibility and application properties of the polymer film.
Kronitex KP-140 can be considered as a viscosity regulator in plastisol systems. Depending on the PVC, resin and other plasticizer systems used, it can contribute to adjusting the process viscosity and achieving more favorable flow behavior during application.
Kronitex KP-140 can act as a plasticizer in synthetic rubber and elastomer systems. By reducing secondary interactions between polymer chains, it can help increase chain mobility and achieve lower stiffness or better low-temperature flexibility.
Kronitex KP-140 is a high-boiling liquid with a low vapor pressure. At about 20 °C, its viscosity is 11–15 mPa·s, its density is about 1.02 g/mL, and its water solubility is about 1.1–1.3 g/L.
The commercial and historical identity of Kronitex KP-140 is directly related to Kronitex KP-140. NIST and international chemical safety sources cite the names Kronitex KP-140, KP-140, and Phosflex T-BEP among the trade names used for Tris(2-butoxyethyl) Phosphate.
The current commercial manufacturer or grade specification for Kronitex KP-140 should not be confused with the information seen in older commercial sources. Today, Kronitex KP-140 grades can be found from different manufacturers under the same CAS number, and parameters such as purity, color, acidity value or water content may vary.
When purchasing Kronitex KP-140, therefore, not only the old trade name, but also the Tris(2-butoxyethyl) Phosphate identity, CAS number, actual purity, physical properties and current COA values must be verified together.

WHAT IS KRONITEX KP-140?

Kronitex KP-140 is chemically a triester formed by phosphoric acid with three 2-butoxyethyl groups.
The IUPAC name is given as Tris(2-butoxyethyl) Phosphate.
NIST also defines the compound as Ethanol, 2-butoxy-, phosphate (3:1). Its molecular formula is C₁₈H₃₉O₇P. Its molecular weight is approximately 398.47 g/mol. CAS No is 78-51-3. EC/EINECS No is 201-122-9.
In the center of the molecule is the phosphate unit carrying the P=O group.
Each of the three ester arms attached to the phosphorus atom has the structure -O-CH₂-CH₂-O-C₄H₉. Therefore, the molecule carries both polar regions due to phosphate and ether oxygens and organic character due to butoxy chains. This dual structure promotes compatibility with different resins and elastomers.
Kronitex KP-140 is a light-colored or colorless, viscous liquid at room temperature. Thanks to its very low freezing point, it can remain liquid at low temperatures.
A melting or freezing point of about −70 °C has been reported in the literature. Low vapor pressure indicates a limited tendency to evaporate rapidly at normal ambient temperature.
This property is important for the plasticizer.
The rapid displacement of the plasticizer from the polymer film can lead to an increase in stiffness and brittleness over time.
Thanks to its low volatility, Kronitex KP-140 can stay in the polymer or coating system for a longer period of time.
However, the actual migration resistance does not depend solely on vapor pressure.
Chemical compatibility with the polymer, temperature, contact surface, and other additives also affect migration behavior.
Kronitex KP-140 can increase the mobility of polymer chains in synthetic rubbers and plastics. The plasticizer molecule enters between the polymer chains, reducing chain-chain interactions.
Thus, the glass transition temperature and hardness of the system can be reduced depending on the application. Elasticity and low-temperature flexibility can be improved.
And in plastisol formulations, Kronitex KP-140 can affect not only mechanical properties but also initial viscosity and gel behavior.
It can be used to control film flexibility, surface smoothness and application behavior in floor polishes.
Kronitex KP-140 may also exhibit solvent or co-solvent-like behavior in some resins.
International chemical safety sources state that the compound is also used as an antifoam.
Therefore, Kronitex KP-140 can not be considered as a single-function plasticizer, but as a multi-functional phosphate ester additive according to the application.

CHEMICAL STRUCTURE AND MOLECULAR PROPERTIES OF KRONITEX KP-140

Kronitex KP-140 has a phosphorus atom at its center.
The phosphorus atom carries one pair bonded oxygen and three phosphate ester oxygen.
Each ester oxygen is attached to the 2-butoxyethyl group.

The general structure can be shown as follows:

[CH₃(CH₂)₃OCH₂CH₂O]₃P(O)

This structure results in a total of seven oxygen atoms in the molecule.

The phosphate part has a strong polar character.

Ether bonds also provide dipole-dipole interactions.

Butoxin chains show hydrocarbon characteristics.

Thus, Kronitex KP-140 is not only a nonpolar or only polar additive.

This non-amphiphilic yet polarity-balanced structure can enhance its compatibility in various resins.

In the polymer phase, Kronitex KP-140 can settle between chains.

Some of the polymer-polymer interactions are replaced by polymer-plasticizer interactions.

The free volume of chains may increase.

It may become easier for molecular segments to move.

This can reduce the glass transition temperature.

The material can become softer and more pliable.

The phosphate ester structure can form phosphorus-containing degradation products during combustion.
Therefore, Kronitex KP-140 can contribute to changing the flammability behavior in combination with plasticization in some systems.
However, flame retardant performance is strongly dependent on the type of polymer and the level of use.
Kronitex KP-140 should not be used assuming that it will provide the same performance as special reactive flame retardants with high phosphorus content.

The approximate theoretical phosphorus content is around 7.8%.

This value can be calculated from the ratio of phosphorus atoms in the total weight of the molecule.

Ether groups can support the interaction of the molecule with polar resins and plastisol systems.

Three butoxin chains prevent complete solubility in water.

For this reason, Kronitex KP-140 is only soluble in water in a limited amount.

It can show higher compatibility in organic solvents and many resin environments.

The main functions of Kronitex KP-140 at the molecular level are:

Settling between polymer chains

Increasing chain mobility

Helping to reduce the glass transition temperature

Reducing stiffness

Improving flexibility

Regulating low-temperature properties

Changing plastisol viscosity

Regulating the flow of the coating film

Demonstrate co-solvent behavior in resin systems

Changing flammability behavior with phosphorus content

Helping to reduce foam in some systems

The same approach applies to purity.
In old international sources, it was stated that the technical Kronitex KP-140 product may contain impurities such as tributyl phosphate, 2-butoxyethanol and phosphoric acid.
Today, the impurity profile of commercial high-purity grades can be different.
Historical impurity levels should therefore not be applied directly to the current product.

HOW DOES KRONITEX KP-140 WORK AT THE MOLECULAR LEVEL?

The plasticizing effect of Kronitex KP-140 is based on the fact that it weakens the molecular interactions between polymer chains.
In a polymer system without plasticizers, the chains can be packed close together.
Strong dipole or hydrogen bond-like interactions can be found between polar groups.
When Kronitex KP-140 molecules enter between polymer chains, some of these chain-chain interactions are reduced.

Free volume may increase.

Segmental mobility increases.

The material may become more flexible as a result of this.

At low temperature, brittleness can be reduced.

Film or elastomer hardness can be reduced.

In plastisol systems, the low-viscosity Kronitex KP-140 molecule alters the flow properties of the liquid phase between the resin particles.

Therefore, the application viscosity can be adjusted.

Higher interaction develops between the polymer and the plasticizer during heating.

The plastisol becomes a gel and then the fusion can be completed.

In floor polishes, Kronitex KP-140 can reduce the brittleness of the film-forming polymer phase.

It can also help surface spreading and film smoothness.

The phosphate ester structure can influence flame behavior by forming phosphorus-containing intermediates during combustion.

However, this effect varies depending on the resin used and the concentration of Kronitex KP-140.

The main functions of Kronitex KP-140 at the molecular and formulation level are:

Plasticizing

Enhancing polymer chain mobility

Reducing the glass transition temperature

Providing flexibility

Improving low-temperature behavior

Adjusting plastisol viscosity

Supporting film formation

Changing resin solubility or swelling

Helping to reduce foam

Changing combustion behavior with phosphate structure

Applications of flame retardant plasticizers

International chemical safety sources define the main areas of use of Kronitex KP-140 as floor polish, solvent in some resins, viscosity modifier in plastisols, antifoam and plasticizer in synthetic rubber/plastic/lacquer systems.
Some of these usage areas are historical applications.
In developing an up-to-date industrial product, the legislation and modern alternatives in the target market should be evaluated separately.

FLOOR POLISH, COATING AND RESIN APPLICATIONS OF KRONITEX KP-140

Floor polishes are one of the best documented uses of Kronitex KP-140.
After applying the floor polish film, it loses water or solvent and forms a continuous polymer layer.
When the film is too hard, it can become brittle at low temperature or mechanical impact.
Kronitex KP-140 can regulate flexibility by increasing polymer chain mobility within the film.

Possible functions of Kronitex KP-140 in flooring and coating systems include:

Improving film flexibility

Reducing fragility

Supporting film formation

Regulating surface spread

Plasticizing the polymer phase

Adjusting the mechanical behavior of the coating

Supporting low temperature performance

Changing the application viscosity

Improving resin compatibility

Supporting surface smoothness

Film flexibility can increase as the amount of plasticizer increases in floor polishes.
However, too high a level of plasticizer can cause the film to become too soft.
Scratching and dirt retention may increase.
Gloss strength may vary.
For this reason, the level of Kronitex KP-140 must be optimized not only on flexibility but also on the overall surface performance.
In resin systems, Kronitex KP-140 can swell some polymers or exert a solvent-like effect.
This behavior depends on the polarity and molecular weight of the resin.
During the selection of plasticizers, the risk of migration from the film and exudation to the surface should also be evaluated.

USE OF KRONITEX KP-140 IN PVC, PLASTIC, RUBBER AND ELASTOMER APPLICATIONS

Kronitex KP-140 can be used as a viscosity regulator in plastisol systems.

Plastisol is usually the system in which PVC resin particles are dispersed in the liquid plasticizer phase.

The initial viscosity determines the applicability of the coating, dipping, spreading or molding process.

Kronitex KP-140 can modify total plastisol rheology as a low viscosity phosphate ester.

Its interaction with PVC can develop during heating, affecting gel and fusion behavior.

As the plasticizer ratio increases, the final PVC generally becomes softer.

In return, the mechanical modulus and surface hardness may decrease.

Kronitex KP-140 can also be used as a softener/plasticizer in synthetic rubbers.

Lowering the viscosity of the rubber compound can reduce the mixing and forming energy.

Filler dispersion can be made easy.

Extrusion or molding behavior can vary.

The final elastomer hardness can be reduced.

Low-temperature flexibility can be improved.

However, the compatibility of the plasticizer with the elastomer is the critical parameter.

The incompatible admixture can migrate to the surface over time.

Contact with oil, water, solvent or other media may also affect extraction behavior.

For this reason, not only process viscosity but also long-term migration and extraction tests should be performed in the rubber system to be used with Kronitex KP-140.

IS KRONITEX KP-140 USED IN FOOD, COSMETICS AND PHARMACEUTICAL APPLICATIONS?

Kronitex KP-140 is mainly technical plasticizer and phosphate ester additive.

It is not a direct food additive.

It should not be added as an ingredient in food formulation.

Historical sources contain information about the use of Kronitex KP-140 as a plasticizer in some food contact plastics.

This does not mean that Kronitex KP-140 is a food additive.

In modern food contact applications, the compliance of the exact product with the legislation of the target country should also be verified.

In cosmetic formulations, Kronitex KP-140 is not positioned as a general-purpose cosmetic raw material.

It should not be used without documenting suitability for cosmetic use.

The same is true in pharmaceutical applications.

Kronitex KP-140 has been reported to be used in the past as a plasticizer in certain rubber stoppers or technical medical parts.

However, for pharmaceutical packaging, medical elastomers or products that come into contact with blood, current extractables/leachables, biocompatibility and regulatory requirements are much stricter.

Therefore, Kronitex KP-140 should not be assumed to be of pharmaceutical or medical grade.

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS OF KRONITEX KP-140

The industrial function of Kronitex KP-140 is mainly plasticization and adjustment of liquid phase properties.

The following functions may come to the fore in industrial Kronitex KP-140 applications:

Foam control

Providing low-temperature flexibility

Reducing process viscosity

Reducing film brittleness

Enhancing polymer chain mobility

Helping to change flammability behaviour

Technical plasticizing of lacquers and coatings

Kronitex KP-140 usage amount cannot be given as a single percentage for all systems.
The required amounts are different in floor polish, plastisol, rubber and resin applications.
The formulator should determine the level of utilization based on target Shore hardness, Tg, film flexibility, viscosity or flame performance.
The same level of Kronitex KP-140 does not provide the same effect on different polymers.
The difference in solubility parameter between polymer and plasticizer is significant.
With high compatibility, the plasticizer can remain more homogeneous within the polymer matrix.
With low compatibility, transpiration or migration to the surface may occur.

The following issues should be evaluated when using Kronitex KP-140 in industrial systems:

WHAT PROBLEMS CAN KRONITEX KP-140 SOLVE?

Kronitex KP-140 can help solve technical problems such as excessive hardness, high process viscosity or insufficient low temperature flexibility in plastic, rubber and coating systems.

Polymer film is too brittle

Kronitex KP-140 can help improve film flexibility by increasing polymer chain mobility.

Low-temperature cracking

The plasticizing effect can contribute to lowering Tg, reducing low-temperature brittleness.

Plastisol viscosity is too high

Kronitex KP-140 can help lower the application viscosity by changing the rheology of the liquid phase.

Rubber compound is difficult to process

At the appropriate level, the plasticizer can reduce the mixer torque and process viscosity.

Floor polish film is too hard

Kronitex KP-140 can adjust film flexibility and provide more stable behavior against mechanical deformations.

Insufficient flow of resin

Its solvent/plasticizer character can change the flow and film formation behavior.

Excessive foam formation in the formulation

International sources state that Kronitex KP-140 can also be used as antifoam in some applications.

The need to improve flammability behavior

The phosphorus-containing ester structure may contribute to the improvement of flame behavior in some polymer systems.

However, the specific flame class cannot be guaranteed solely by looking at the use of Kronitex KP-140.

Migration of plasticizer to the surface

Kronitex KP-140 may not always be the solution to this problem.

Compatibility with the polymer, usage rate and ambient conditions should be re-evaluated.

Very soft final product

In this case, it may be necessary to reduce the level of Kronitex KP-140 or use an alternative with lower plasticizer efficacy.

ALTERNATIVES AND COMPARISON OF KRONITEX KP-140

When choosing a Kronitex KP-140 alternative, not only its liquid plasticizer properties should be considered. Phosphorus content, polarity, water solubility, volatility, polymer compatibility, and legislation should be evaluated together.

KRONITEX KP-140 AND TRIBUTYL PHOSPHATE

Kronitex KP-140, aka TBP, is another phosphate ester.
In Kronitex KP-140, butyl chains are directly attached to the phosphate group.
In Kronitex KP-140, on the other hand, additional ether oxygens are present in the butoxyethyl chains.
This structure alters the polarity of Kronitex KP-140 and its interaction with resins.
Kronitex KP-140 has a lower molecular weight and different volatility profile.
The two products should not be substituted directly in the same amount.

KRONITEX KP-140 AND TRIS(2-ETHYLHEXYL) PHOSPHATE

Kronitex KP-140, or TEHP, is also a phosphate ester plasticizer.
The long branched alkyl chains of TEHP form a more hydrophobic structure.
Kronitex KP-140, on the other hand, shows a more polar character due to its three ether oxygens.
Kronitex KP-140 water solubility is lower than Kronitex KP-140.
Both products can have a plasticizer and flame retardant function in certain systems, but their compatibility and viscosity behavior are not the same.

KRONITEX KP-140 AND TRIPHENYL PHOSPHATE

Kronitex is KP-140 i.e. TPP aromatic phosphate ester.
Kronitex KP-140 has a solid and aromatic structure, while Kronitex KP-140 is a phosphate ester with liquid aliphatic/ether function.
TPP can provide higher hardness and different flame retardant performance.
Kronitex KP-140, on the other hand, can provide an advantage in systems where low viscosity is required with its liquid form and strong plasticizing feature.
It should not be considered directly equivalent.

KRONITEX KP-140 AND PHTHALATE PLASTICIZERS

Phthalate plasticizers are very commonly used ester plasticizers in PVC and other polymers.
Kronitex KP-140 is a phosphate ester and contains phosphorus.
Therefore, its flammability and polarity profile are different from that of classical phthalates.
In the evaluation of phthalate alternatives, not only plasticizing efficiency but also migration, toxicology and legislation should be compared.

KRONITEX KP-140 AND POLYMERIC PLASTICIZERS

Polymeric plasticizers can be polyester-type plasticizers with a much higher molecular weight.
Polymeric products can generally achieve lower migration and extraction.
In return, their viscosity can be much higher and the plasticizing efficiency can vary.
Kronitex KP-140 can provide ease of process as it is a low viscosity monomeric plasticizer, but polymeric alternatives may be more suitable in applications where high migration strength is required.

STORAGE AND HANDLING OF KRONITEX KP-140

Storage: Kronitex KP-140 should be stored in dry, clean, and chemically compatible sealed packaging.

Temperature: Due to its low freezing point, it remains liquid at normal storage temperature. It should not be kept at unnecessarily high temperatures for a long time.

Moisture: The packaging should be kept closed to prevent the ingress of water and foreign substances.

Contamination: Cross-contamination with other plasticizers, acids, bases or process chemicals must be avoided.

Transfer: Enclosed pump and transfer systems can reduce worker exposure and spillage risk.

Spillage: Despite the low volatility, spills should be properly contained, as the liquid product can create a slippery surface.

Transport: The exact transport classification must be verified from the current SDS document.

SDS information for historical or other Kronitex KP-140 products should not be used in place of the current document of Kronitex KP-140.

KRONITEX KP-140 SAFETY INFORMATION

Kronitex KP-140 is a liquid organophosphate ester with low volatility.

Inhalation exposure at normal temperature may be lower than that of solvents with high volatility.

However, skin contact and splashes can be important routes of workplace exposure.

Appropriate personal protective equipment should be used to limit eye and skin contact.

In heated processes, the formation of vapors or aerosols can create exposure conditions that differ from normal ambient temperature.

The environmental and toxicological profile of Kronitex KP-140 should be evaluated on the basis of current SDS and REACH information.

ECHA records include current dossier evaluation and regulatory-needs evaluation activities for Tris(2-butoxyethyl) Phosphate.

For this reason, the regulatory status should be checked periodically, especially in long-term product development in Europe.

KRONITEX KP-140 – TECHNICAL SUMMARY

Kronitex KP-140 is one of the trade names used for Tris(2-butoxyethyl) Phosphate, i.e. Kronitex KP-140. The product identified by CAS No 78-51-3 and EC No 201-122-9 is an organic phosphate ester.
Kronitex KP-140 has a molecular formula of C₁₈H₃₉O₇P and a molecular weight of approximately 398.47 g/mol. It contains three 2-butoxyethyl chains attached to the central phosphate group.
The product is light-colored viscous liquid at room temperature. At about 20 °C, it shows a viscosity of 11–15 mPa·s, a density of about 1.02 g/mL, and a water solubility of 1.1–1.3 g/L.
The freezing point of approximately -70 °C and the very low vapor pressure contribute to Kronitex KP-140 remaining liquid over a wide temperature range and exhibiting low volatility at normal temperature.
Kronitex KP-140 can be used in floor polishes, synthetic rubbers, plastics, lacquers and plastisols. Its main functions are plasticization, regulation of plastisol viscosity, solvent/co-solvent function in certain resins and foam control in some systems.
Due to its phosphate ester structure, Kronitex KP-140 can also be considered as a flame-retardant plasticizer in some applications. However, it should not be claimed that a certain fire class will be obtained solely based on the use of Kronitex KP-140.
As a plasticizer, it can increase the mobility of polymer chains, helping to reduce stiffness and glass transition temperature, improving flexibility and low-temperature behavior.
Physical property values for Kronitex KP-140 may vary slightly depending on the source and technical grade. In particular, the purity, flash point and impurity profile should be verified from the exact commercial product's TDS, SDS and COA documents.
Since Kronitex KP-140 is a historical trade name, it should not be assumed that all Kronitex KP-140 products with the same CAS number will be marketed as Kronitex KP-140 today. Exact commercial product demand and chemical equivalent Kronitex KP-140 demand should be separated from each other during the purchasing process.
Companies planning to procure Kronitex KP-140 or Kronitex KP-140 from Ataman Kimya are recommended to confirm the current product and offer conditions by sharing their usage area, minimum purity, viscosity and color requirements, packaging quantity, exact trade-name needs and technical document expectations.
