Lauryl lactate is natural liquid thickener. Lauryl lactate is pH and viscosity stabilizer.

Lauryl lactate, also known as dodecyl lactate, is as the name suggests made from lauryl alcohol and lactic acid via an esterification process. Lauryl alcohol is obtained from palm oil. And lactic acid is one of the naturally occurring Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs). It is found in milk. It comes as pale yellow to a yellow clear liquid. It has a faint, buttery fragrance.

Lauryl Lactate is a naturally occurring acid known as an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) found in beauty products and cosmetics functioning as an emollient, skin conditioning agent, and exfoliant. It is also infrequently used to impart fragrance in some products

Because Lauryl Lactate is so versatile, it is seen as an ingredient in a variety of beauty products and cosmetics, including: moisturizers, exfoliants, cleansers, body lotions, makeup, shampoos, hair dyes, and conditioners.

Use & Benefits:

Lauryl Lactate is an emollient, detergent/emulsifier, and surfactant used in cosmetic formulations.

Lauryl Lactate is an ester of fatty alcohol and fatty acid, so it has properties of both the molecules in a way that provides moisture or improves the fat content of the skin. It gives a smooth feel to the skin and forms a protective layer on the skin that retains skin moisture within. It has a free alcohol group in its chemical formula, which gives it water solubility and such property is particularly useful in the preparation of bath oil. It doesn’t dry out the skin as well as offers cleansing to the skin. It is used in moisturizers, cleansing products, skincare products, makeup, shampoos, hair dyes, and hair care products.

LAURYL LACTATE is an inactive component of 5 DAY (aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex glycine liquid) used to reduce underarm perspiration.

The CIR has approved Lauryl Lactate for use in cosmetics, but only in concentrates less than 10%, and only with a pH level of 3.5 or greater

In addition, it is important to note that while Lauryl Lactate itself is not considered carcinogenic, because it is classified as an AHA and sometimes used as an exfoliant, it is thought to increase the risk of cancer because it exposes the upper layers of the dermis to UV rays. Therefore, Lauryl Lactate should always be used with a sunscreen to negate this increase risk, according to RealSelf.com.

The FDA has approved Lauryl Lactate as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) when used as a food additive.
