Lead Octoate

Lead Octoate
Lead Octoate is one of the auxiliary driers also called as through drier.Lead octoate is used as active or top drier. It promotes hard, through drying throughout the entire film and also promotes flexibility. In alkyd finishes where fume proof finishes are not specified. Lead is used in combination with Cobalt and Calcium octoate, It is always advisable to use Lead Octoate after the addition of Calcium octoate to eliminate the possibility of reaction of lead with unreacted phthalic anhydride in alkyd media, which could form lead phathlate. In tong oil alkyd medium 0.05 to 2.00% of lead is the usual amount required in conjunction with Cobalt and Calcium soaps. In outside paints and floorfinishes as well as in banking enamels Lead octoate is used with Manganese drier to produce a tough and hard film. In tong oil phenolic resin, lead promotes drying. It is also used in Polyurethane finishes as major auxiliary drier. Lead octoate is the most important auxiliary drier especially in applications where drying is required at low temperatures (less than 10 deg. centigrade.) Different metal concentrations of lead drier such as 18,24,32,36 percentage are used by the paint industry.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS OF LEAD OCTOATE

Metallic carboxylates, metal salts of carboxylic acids, have industrial applications in;
Drier/Additive for paints, coatings and inks; Driers are substances put into paint to make dry quickly. They are metallic salts of low-molecular-weight
(chiefly C8) fatty acids or naphthenic acids. Naphthenic acid is a complex of carboxylic acids( various low-molecular-weight fatty acids believed to
have cyclopentane ring mainly). Hydrocarbon parts take oxygen in air and metals act as catalyst to speed up the oxidative coating. Cobalt is the most useful.
It is a powerful oxidation catalyst and can keep whiteness. Auxiliary metals should be added to prevent surface wrinkling after drying. Primary metals which
can replace for cobalt are zirconium, lead, cerium and iron and auxiliary metals are like calcium, manganese, barium, zinc, lithium.

Catalyst for chemical reactions (polymerization, esterification, oxidation, condensation, hydrogenation and other reactions) and catalystic special
applications in lubricant and grease additives, fuel combustion additives to enhance and stabilize the performance of fuels.

Rubber Adhesion Promoters ; Metallic naphthenates, neodecanoates, resinates, boroneodecanoates, and stearates are widely used in rubber industry especially
in the radial tire industry to promote adhesion between the rubber wire coat compound and the brass-coated steel belt. Cobalt carboxylates are most widely used.

Polyurethane catalysts: Tin, bismuth, mercury, zinc carboxylates and their blends with amines are used as catalysts in the production of rigid, flexible
polyurethanes and elastomers.

Unsaturated Polyester Promoters: Cobalt, Potassium, Copper, and Zinc carboxylates (mainly octoates and naphthenates) are used as initiators/promoters for curing
of polyester resins.
