LEVELLING AGENT HL988/HL788/HL505

Levelling Agent HL988/HL788/HL505 is a family of polyacrylate-based leveling agents offered by Huangshan Huahui Technology to improve surface flow, film leveling, substrate wetting and final surface smoothness in powder coating systems.
The HL988, HL788 and HL505 in this product family were developed to address the same basic technical problem, namely the problem that the powder coating film does not spread evenly enough during melting and curing. However, the three grades are not the same product and should not be substituted at the same usage rate.
Levelling Agent HL988/HL788/HL505 is defined as a silica carrier polyacrylate-based general-purpose leveling agent in manufacturer and commercial technical sources. It can be used in pure epoxy, epoxy/polyester hybrid, pure polyester TGIC/HAA, polyurethane and different thermoset powder coating systems. The recommended general use level is approximately 0.8–1.2% of the total formulation weight.
Levelling Agent HL988/HL788/HL505 is also positioned as a general-purpose powder coating leveling agent based on polyacrylate carried on silica. It is specifically stated that the product does not contain silicone. This feature is important in reducing the risk of unnecessary negative effects on coating adhesion while ensuring surface leveling. The general recommended dosage for HL788 is approximately 1.2–1.6%.
Levelling Agent HL988/HL788/HL505 is a silica carrier polyacrylate based leveling agent. It can be used in epoxy, hybrid, pure polyester, polyurethane and both thermoset and some thermoplastic powder coating systems. In technical product sources, it is seen that HL505 is especially positioned to reduce surface tension, eliminate fish-eye and crater defects, improve substrate wetting and provide cost advantages. The recommended usage level is approximately 2-3%.
The common technical working principle of the three products is to help reduce surface tension differences within the film at the stage where the resin melts and the viscosity temporarily decreases when the powder coating enters the oven.
As the powder coating melts, the particles fuse together. A short flow window is created in which the surface can smooth out before the film is cross-linked. If surface tension differences, insufficient substrate wetting or local viscosity differences due to pigment/filler are found at this stage, the coating may not spread properly.
As a result, orange peel, crater, fish-eye, irregular gloss, insufficient film closure or local recession may occur.
The polyacrylate phase of the Levelling Agent HL988/HL788/HL505, HL788 and HL505 acts in the coating melt phase, helping to make the surface tension more homogeneous.
In this way, micro-surface irregularities can be reduced before the film hardens.
The coating can spread more evenly. Substrate wetting can improve Gloss can increase.

The fact that these products are silica carriers helps to dose the liquid or adhesive polyacrylate surface additive with powder coating raw materials more easily and to mix them homogeneously in the premix stage.
The silica carrier ensures that the product is available in a free-flowing solid powder form.
During extrusion, the organic polyacrylate phase is dispersed in the resin matrix.
The extrudate is then cooled, ground and powder coating particles are obtained. During application and curing, the polyacrylate phase regulates the film surface behavior. The HL988/HL788/HL505 family is not a curing agent.
It is not a pigment. It is not a main resin. It is not a filler.
It does not have the same function as the classical degassing agent like benzoin.
These products are low-dosage additives mainly used for flow, leveling, wetting and surface appearance control.
They can be used in combination with benzoin because the outgassing/pinhole problem targeted by benzoin is different from the surface runoff problem targeted by the leveling agent.
The HL988/HL788/HL505 product family can be used especially in metal furniture, white goods, electrical equipment, shelving systems, machine parts, general industrial metal components and decorative powder coating applications.
When choosing a product, the question "which product is stronger?" should not be asked.
HL988 can be considered as a high-efficiency general-purpose option with a lower dosage range.
HL788 stands out as a silicone-free grade that aims to keep the adhesion effect to a minimum.
HL505 can be considered as an economical general purpose alternative with a higher level of use.
The actual choice should be made based on resin chemistry, cure system, pigment loading, target gloss, intercoat adhesion needs, cost and existing surface defects.

WHAT IS LEVELLING AGENT HL988/HL788/HL505?

Levelling Agent HL988/HL788/HL505 is a family of polyacrylate-based additives used to improve surface leveling during film formation in powder coating systems.
All three grades are in the general-purpose leveling agent group in the Huangshan Huahui Technology product portfolio.
Levelling Agent HL988/HL788/HL505 are in the same family of manufacturers, but their formulations, active/carrier ratios, and recommended usage levels are not the same.
HL988 is defined as a polyacrylate-based leveling agent on a silica carrier.
HL788 is identified as a silica adsorption polyacrylate flow/levelling agent and is specifically stated as silicone-free.
HL505 is also a silica carrier polyacrylate leveling agent.
Polyacrylate chemistry refers to high molecular weight polymers derived from acrylate monomers.
In some commercial and shipping sources, the organic active phase of HL988, poly(butyl acrylate), has been associated with CAS No 9003-49-0.
However, this information should not be used to assign a single, precise CAS number to all three grades.
HL988, HL788, and HL505 are formulated commercial additives.
They contain silica carrier.
Active polymer/carrier ratios may vary by grade.
Therefore, it is not technically correct to give a single molecular formula, a single molecular weight, or a single CAS number for the entire product family.
The general repeat unit for poly(butyl acrylate) can be denoted as [-CH₂-CH(COOC₄H₉)-]n.
The general repetition unit formula can be expressed as (C₇H₁₂O₂)n.
However, this formula does not refer to the entire HL988/HL788/HL505 commercial mix.
The silica carrier is the inorganic phase.
Polyacrylate is the organic sur-regulatory phase.
In powder coating, these two phases perform different functions.
Silica carrier mainly solid form, easy to transport, dosage and dispersion.
The polyacrylate phase provides true leveling and surface tension control function.

The recommended general use level of HL988 is 0.8–1.2%.
The recommended general use level of HL788 is 1.2–1.6%.
The recommended general use level of HL505 is 2–3%.
These values should be evaluated over the total formulation weight.
A difference in dosage indicates that the active ingredient ratio or carrier structure of the products may be different.
However, exact active ratios should not be assumed without verification from the current manufacturer's TDS or COA document.
The HL788's silicone-free nature can be particularly advantageous for systems that are sensitive to recoating, adhesion, or silicone contamination.
Although HL505 requires higher dosage, it is associated with the advantage of cost reduction in technical resources.
HL988 can be considered a general-purpose high-yield grade with a lower usage level and wide system compatibility.

CHEMICAL STRUCTURE AND MOLECULAR PROPERTIES OF LEVELLING AGENT HL988/HL788/HL505

The active surface regulatory phase of the Levelling Agent HL988/HL788/HL505 family is polyacrylate based.
Polyacrylates are high molecular weight polymers that contain a carbon-carbon main chain and ester side groups.
Considering the Levelling Agent HL988/HL788/HL505 butyl acrylate-based polyacrylate, the ester carbonyl groups provide specific polarity, while the butyl segments support compatibility with organic resin phases.
This combination ensures a controlled compatibility that is not completely soluble in the polymer matrix but also does not exhibit strong macrophase separation.
This balance is important for the leveling agent to work.
If the additive is excessively compatible with the coating matrix, the required enrichment may not occur on the surface.
If it is too incompatible, new defects such as haze, crater, intercoat adhesion problems or surface contamination may occur.
Polyacrylate flow agents help reduce surface tension gradients by moving in the direction of the coating-air interface while the film is molten.
Although this phenomenon is different from classical surfactant adsorption, it has similar principles in terms of surface energy control.
Levelling Agent HL988/HL788/HL505 silica carrier is a solid inorganic carrier besides organic acrylic phase.
This carrier makes powder handling easier.
It allows the liquid acrylic additive to be bagged and enter the dry premix.
During extrusion, the active polymer diffuses into the resin phase.
Shipment data for HL988 shows a composition description that includes colloidal silicon dioxide, butyl acrylate polymer, and a small amount of barium sulfate.
This information supports that HL988 is not the only pure poly(butyl acrylate).
However, the same composition percentages should not be automatically applied to the HL788 or HL505.
It should be noted that the main differences between the three grades may be due not only to the name but also to parameters such as active polymer/carrier ratio, polymer molecular-weight profile and process design.

However, active content should not be calculated from dosage alone.
App performance must be verified by real movie testing.

HOW DOES THE LEVELLING AGENT HL988/HL788/HL505 WORK AT THE MOLECULAR LEVEL?

After the powder coating is electrostatically applied to the metal surface, it enters the curing oven.

In the first stage, the dust particles heat up.

The resin softens.

The particles melt and begin to coalesce.

Film viscosity temporarily decreases.

This period is the flow-out window.

If the surface tension is not the same at every point on the film surface, the liquid phase may move towards areas of high surface tension.

This movement may cause local filming.

Crater or fish-eye may occur.

Pigment, filler, contamination, silicone, oil, substrate treatment or different resin components can cause surface tension differences.

The polyacrylate phase of HL988/HL788/HL505 is dispersed in the melt film.

It helps to balance the surface tension differences on the coating-air interface.

The film spreads more controlled.

Micro-roughness can be reduced before hardening.

Substrate wetting develops.

Surface smoothness is elevated.

Gloss can be more homogeneous.

Then the curing reaction accelerates.

Molecular weight increases.

Film viscosity rises.

Surface flow stops.

Therefore, the time interval in which the leveling agent can be effective is limited.

If the cure is too fast, the film may lock before the additive can completely correct the surface imperfections.

In this case, simply increasing the amount of HL988, HL788, or HL505 may not be the right solution.

Resin reactivity, catalyst, cure temperature and film thickness should be examined separately.

Likewise, using too many leveling agents does not provide optimum results.

Excessive surface-active additive intercoat adhesion can create contamination sensitivity or different surface defects.

Therefore, dosage screening is mandatory.

The main functions of the product family at the formulation level:

Flow-out development

Surface tension control

Crater reduction

Fish-eye reduction

Orange peel reduction

Substrate wetting development

Gloss enhancement

Enhancing film smoothness

Creating a smooth decorative finish

Supporting powder coating quality consistency

IN WHICH SECTORS IS THE LEVELLING AGENT HL988/HL788/HL505 USED?

The main sector of use is the powder coatings industry.

Main areas of use:

Epoxy powder coatings

Epoxy/polyester hybrid powder coatings

Polyester/TGIC powder coatings

Polyester/HAA powder coatings

Polyurethane powder coatings

Thermosetting powder coatings

Some thermoplastic powder coatings

Metal furniture

White goods

Electrical panels

Lighting equipment

Shelving systems

Machine Parts

Industrial metal equipment

Decorative metal products

Automotive aftermarket metal components

Home appliance parts

Applications of electrostatic powder coating

Smooth finish coatings

High-gloss coatings

General industrial coatings

The basic application area of the three grades is similar.
However, it should be tested which one is more suitable in the same formulation.
HL988 may require lower dosage.
HL788 can be preferred in systems with silicone-free requirements.
HL505 can be advantageous in cost/performance oriented systems.

USE OF LEVELLING AGENT HL988 IN POWDER COATING APPLICATIONS

HL988 is the general-purpose grade used at a lower dosage in this family.

The recommended general use level is 0.8–1.2%.

It can be used in pure epoxy systems.

It can be used in epoxy/polyester hybrid systems.

It can be used in polyester/TGIC systems.

It can be used in polyester/HAA systems.

It can be used for polyurethane powder coatings.

HL988 helps reduce fish-eye and crater defects.

Coating reduces surface tension.

Improves substrate wettability.

It helps to increase the film gloss.

These features are especially important in systems where a high decorative appearance is required.

Due to its low dosage, it can provide an advantage in terms of the amount of active use in the formulation cost evaluation.
However, the price per kg alone is not sufficient for an economic decision.
The actual cost should be calculated over the percentage of kg additive × usage.
Using the HL988 at too low a level may not provide sufficient leveling.
Overuse can create surface additive overloading.
Therefore, screening 0.8% / 1.0% / 1.2% is the appropriate initial approach.

USE OF LEVELLING AGENT HL788 IN POWDER COATING APPLICATIONS

HL788 is a general-purpose silica carrier polyacrylate flow/leveling agent.

The recommended level of use is 1.2–1.6%.

In the technical sources for the HL788, it is stated that it does not contain silicone composition.

Being silicone-free can provide a significant advantage in terms of coating adhesion.

Silicone-free grade selection can be preferred, especially in systems where second coat paint will be applied or in processes sensitive to surface contamination.

HL788 helps to increase powder coating flow.

The film can enhance clarity and smoothness.

Supports substrate wetting.

It can reduce the appearance of orange peels.

It contributes to the control of crater and fish-eye problems.

There are commercial technical explanations that there is no wetting promoter in the HL788.
Therefore, if there is a special wetting requirement, a separate wetting promoter system can be evaluated.
The dosage range is higher than that of HL988.
This may indicate that the active/carrier ratio or formulation design of HL788 is different.
However, the exact ratio should not be calculated without TDS.
For HL788, the 1.2% / 1.4% / 1.6% screening is an appropriate initial study.

USE OF LEVELLING AGENT HL505 IN POWDER COATING APPLICATIONS

HL505 is a silica carrier polyacrylate leveling agent.

The recommended level of use is approximately 2–3% of the total formulation.

HL505 helps reduce fish-eye and crater defects.

Reduces film surface tension.

Base improves substrate wettability.

It is also associated with the cost reduction advantage in commercial technical resources.

It can be used in epoxy systems.

It can be used in hybrid systems.

It can be used in pure polyester systems.

It can be used in polyurethane systems.

In addition to thermosetting powder coatings, it is also recommended for use for some thermoplastic powder coatings.

The utilization level of HL505 is higher than that of HL988 and HL788.

For this reason, the price of kg should not be looked at only in price comparison.

For example, even if the HL505 has a lower kg price, the actual formulation cost may be different from the 2.5% usage and 1% usage of the HL988.

In addition, the performance target is also important.

For cost-sensitive general industrial coating, HL505 may be suitable.

For a premium smooth/high-gloss system, HL988 or HL788 may be more advantageous.

This selection should be based on actual panel testing.

IS LEVELLING AGENT HL988/HL788/HL505 USED IN FOOD, COSMETICS AND PHARMACEUTICAL APPLICATIONS?

This product family is an industrial powder coating additive.
It is not a food additive.
Cosmetics are not positioned as raw materials.
It is not a pharmaceutical active ingredient or standard excipient.
The fact that polyacrylate or silica components are used in other sectors does not mean that these three commercial grades are suitable for the same fields.
In particular, information can be found on the internet that mixes HL988/HL788/HL505 with polyacrylic acid or carbomer chemistry.
This information does not accurately represent the powder coating grade ID.
The actual commercial position of Levelling Agent HL988/HL788/HL505 is in the field of industrial coatings/powder coatings.
If food-contact coating or medical-device coating is to be applied, the exact regulatory statement must be obtained from the manufacturer.
General polyacrylate CAS number or silica information alone does not provide eligibility.

WHAT PROBLEMS CAN THE LEVELLING AGENT HL988/HL788/HL505 SOLVE?

Orange peel

All three grades can help reduce the appearance of orange peel by improving film flow-out.

Crater

Crater formation caused by surface tension difference can be reduced.

Fish-eye

Substrate wetting and surface tension control can reduce fish-eye defect.

Low gloss

As surface smoothness improves, light reflection may become more regular and gloss may increase.

Poor substrate wetting

Polyacrylate leveling agent can support wetting by improving surface spreading.

High filler loading due to poor flow

Leveling agent can help, but if the main problem is very high melt viscosity, resin/filler balance should be regulated separately.

Very fast cure

A leveling agent alone may not be enough.

The cure window should be extended or the resin/catalyst system should be optimized.

Pinhole

HL988/HL788/HL505 is not a direct degassing agent.

Benzoin or other degassing solution may be required.

Intercoat adhesion

In this problem, the surface additive level may be too high.

Especially in systems where recoating is required, the silicone-free feature of the HL788 can be an advantage.

Substrate contamination

The leveling agent can reduce a limited level of surface defect, but oil, silicone, or dirt contamination must be removed in the process itself.
