According to a popular historical herbal text, Lobelia Intiata Extract acts on the uterus, but not in a way that would contraindicate its use during pregnancy, as a parturifacient.
The text notes that Lobelia Intiata Extract promotes normal uterine contraction after the cervical os is dilated, and it relaxes perineal muscles.

Lobelia is a genus of perennial flowering plants that have been used in folk medicine for centuries.
Although there are over 300 species of lobelia, the most commonly used herb is Lobelia Intiata Extract, which is native to the Northeastern United States.
Lobelia Intiata Extract has pale colored flowers, compared to its cousin species, and it belongs to the Lobeliaceae plant family.

Native Americans understood the potential medicinal value of this powerful herb and tribes used the herb for a wide variety of purposes.
This is why the herb is sometimes called “Indian tobacco.”
The most important compound in the plant is lobeline, which has been studied for its ability to improve neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, as well as ADHD and neuropsychiatric disease.

Lobelia Intiata Extract, also called Indian tobacco, has a long history of use as an herbal remedy for respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, and cough.
Historically, Native Americans smoked Lobelia Intiata Extract as a treatment for asthma.

In the 19th century, American physicians prescribed Lobelia Intiata Extract to induce vomiting in order remove toxins from the body.
Because of this, Lobelia Intiata Extract earned the name "puke weed."
Today, Lobelia Intiata Extract is sometimes suggested to help clear mucus from the respiratory tract, including the throat, lungs, and bronchial tubes.

Although few studies have evaluated the safety and effectiveness of Lobelia Intiata Extract, some herbalists today use lobelia as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for asthma.
Lobelia Intiata Extract is a perennial herb found in the eastern half of the United States and parts of Canada.

The base of the violet-pinkish flowers "inflates" to form the seed capsule, which is the source of the name "inflata."
Scientists think an active ingredient in the lobelia plant, lobeline, has similar effects to nicotine.
For this reason, Lobelia Intiata Extract was once used as a nicotine substitute in many antismoking products and preparations designed to break the smoking habit.

In 1993, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prohibited the sale of smoking products containing lobeline.
The FDA reported that such products were not effective in helping people quit or reduce smoking.
Researchers now think that Lobelia Intiata Extract may actually reduce the effects of nicotine in the body, particularly the release of dopamine.

Dopamine is a brain chemical that plays a number of important roles in the brain.
It is also involved in drug addiction, so researchers think that lobeline may have some potential in treating addiction.
So far, however, there have been no studies to determine whether lobeline is effective.

The sale of over-the-counter (OTC) lobeline products for smoking cessation was prohibited by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993.
Lobeline has traditionally been used to treat asthma and bronchitis.
However, clinical trial data are lacking to recommend use for any indication.

Lobelia Intiata Extract has been used in smoking cessation programs and has been proposed for treatment of other drug dependencies; however, clinical evidence is limited.

-Medicinal Uses and Indications
Few studies have examined at the effect of Lobelia Intiata Extract in either animals or people.
It is sometimes suggested (usually in combination with other herbs) for the treatment of the following respiratory problems:

*Asthma
*Bronchitis
*Cough
In homeopathy, Lobelia Intiata Extract is also used alone or with other products for smoking cessation, muscle relaxation, nausea, vomiting, skin infections (bites, bruises, poison ivy, and ringworm), and various respiratory illnesses.

-Asthma and other respiratory disorders:
Lobelia Intiata Extract is sometimes used alongside conventional medications to help treat symptoms of asthma attacks, such as wheezing, uncontrollable coughing, and chest tightness.
This is because lobeline may relax your airways, stimulate breathing, and clear mucus from your lungs.

-Depression
Compounds found in Lobelia Intiata Extract may also help protect against mood disorders, including depression.
Specifically, Lobelia Intiata Extract may block certain receptors in the brain that play a role in the development of depression.

-Drug abuse
Lobelia Intiata Extract has been studied as a potential treatment for drug abuse.
Since lobeline has similar effects on your body as nicotine, it has long been considered a possible tool to help people quit smoking.

-Antioxidant capacity:
Compounds in other types of lobelia, especially the alkaloid lobinaline found in Lobelia cardinalis, have been shown to act as antioxidants.
Antioxidants are compounds that fight free radicals.
These are reactive molecules that can damage cells in your body and increase your risk for illnesses, such as cancer and heart disease.
Thus, Lobelia Intiata Extract may play a beneficial role in diseases that stem from free radical damage and affect the brain, such as Parkinson’s disease.

TRADITIONAL USES AND ADVERSE EFFECTS OF LOBELIA INTIATA EXTRACT:
Lobelia Intiata Extract has a long use as a medicinal plant as an entheogenic, emetic, and skin or respiratory aid.
Native Americans used Lobelia Intiata Extract for respiratory and muscle disorders, as a purgative, and as a ceremonial medicine.
The leaves were chewed and smoked.

The plant was used as a traditional medicinal plant by the Cherokee, Iroquois, Penobscot, and other indigenous peoples.
The foliage was burned by the Cherokee as a natural insecticide, to smoke out gnats.
Although Lobelia Intiata Extract may be used medicinally, consuming lobelia causes adverse effects, which may include sweating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, rapid heartbeat, mental confusion, convulsions, hypothermia, coma, or possibly death.

CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS OF LOBELIA INTIATA EXTRACT:
Lobelia Intiata Extract contains multiple alkaloid compounds, including lobeline, norlobelanine, lobelanidine, and radicamine, among other compounds, such as flavonoids, terpenes, alkynes, and coumarins.
Lobelia Intiata Extract concentration is highest in the seeds.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF LOBELIA INTIATA EXTRACT:
1. Reduces Inflammation
Lobelia Intiata Extract has anti-inflammatory effects and is able to decrease pro-inflammatory cytokines.

2. Improves Asthma Symptoms
Lobelia Intiata Extract is commonly used to improve asthma symptoms because of its ability to ease coughing and improve breathing.
Research demonstrates that the herb is an antispasmodic that relaxes the bronchial tubes.
Lobelia Intiata Extract also works as an expectorant that loosens phlegm and makes it easier to breathe.

In addition to improving asthma symptoms, Lobelia Intiata Extract is also used to alleviate symptoms related to allergies, bronchitis and other conditions affecting the respiratory system.
Although this is a well-known Lobelia Intiata Extract benefit, there are no human studies examining its efficacy for asthma and respiratory health.

3. May Promote Cognitive Health
Research indicates that lobeline, a piperidine alkaloid that’s often isolated from Lobelia Intiata Extract, exhibits neuroprotective effects.

4. Used for Smoking Cessation
Lobelia Intiata Extract acts as a partial nicotine agonist, which means that it can mimic the actions of nicotine stimulation.
For this reason, Lobelia Intiata Extract is commonly used to support smoking cessation.

There’s very limited evidence on the efficacy of Lobelia Intiata Extract or lobeline on smoking cessation.
However, clinical trials and many years of use suggest that the herb may have effects similar to nicotine on cognition and, therefore, supports people trying to quit smoking.

5. May Improve Depression
Lobelia Intiata Extract has become known as an antidepressant, relaxant and euphoriant agent.
A 1993 study published in Life Sciences displays that a compound in Lobelia Intiata Extract called beta-amyrin palmitate may have antidepressant activity.
Like most research on Lobelia Intiata Extract, there isn’t enough human evidence on its efficacy for depression.

WHAT IS LOBELIA INTIATA EXTRACT USED FOR?
Traditional/Ethnobotanical uses:
American Indians smoked the leaves as tobacco and used them medicinally for respiratory illnesses. Lobelia Intiata Extract was introduced into New England medical practice in the 18th century to produce vomiting.
Lobelia Intiata Extract was also used in treating colic, rheumatism, fever, and asthma.

By the 19th century, Lobelia Intiata Extract was considered an important medicinal plant used in many conditions (eg, abscess, insomnia, tetanus, shock); however, deaths were recorded due to dosing inconsistencies.
In 1993, the sale of Lobelia Intiata Extract over-the-counter (OTC) products for smoking cessation was prohibited by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

DOSING OF LOBELIA INTIATA EXTRACT:
Clinical trials are lacking to support the use of Lobelia Intiata Extract or provide dosing recommendations.
Traditional use of the leaf (ie, as an expectorant) suggests 100 mg of dry herb up to 3 times a day.

MECHANISM OF ACTION OF LOBELIA INTIATA EXTRACT:
The leaves and seed pods are the most commonly used medicinal parts of Lobelia.
They have been shown to have antiasthmatic, antispasmodic, emetic, expectorant, and respiratory stimulant effects.
α-Lobeline is the most biologically active and frequently investigated alkaloid in Lobelia, out of the more than 20 piperidine alkaloids that have been identified.

α-Lobeline has been shown to be a partial nicotine agonist with effects on the CNS, neuromuscular system, and peripheral circulation.
It is known as a strong respiratory stimulant, activating the carotid and aortic body chemoreceptors.
α-Lobeline relaxes lung tissue and aids in expectoration.
Small amounts stimulate respiration and have expectorant activity.

Larger amounts have emetic, purgative, and diuretic effects.
α-Lobeline initially causes CNS stimulation and then causes CNS and respiratory depression.
Lobelia has been used with success in an array of respiratory conditions including asthma, chronic pneumonia, bronchitis, and laryngitis.

EVIDENCED-BASED RESEARCH OF LOBELIA INTIATA EXTRACT:
A study on horses tested the respiratory effects α-lobeline.
The results revealed a transitory hyperpnea (increased depth and rate of breathing) with an increase in tidal volume and respiratory rate.
This increase in respiratory ventilation lasted for about 90 seconds and was accompanied by a sharp rise in the respiratory peak airflows, especially the expiratory flows.

LOBELIA INTIATA EXTRACT CONTAINS:
In addition to the lobeline present in lobelia, the herb also contains:
