Coalescent is a functional additive in water dispersion paints and varnishes that promotes film formation. Coalescents are designed to reduce the minimum temperature of film formation, to facilitate the process of coalescence: adhesion or merging of film-forming droplets.

In the process of film formation, coalescents must completely leave the paint film after the drying process, the remains of coalescent negatively affect the performance properties of paint and varnish coatings. The optimal selection of the nature and quantity of coalescents largely determines the quality of the formation of the paintwork.
