LUTENSOL M 7

Lutensol M 7 is a nonionic alcohol ethoxylate-based surfactant offered by BASF to improve wetting, emulsification, grease and dirt removal performance in domestic, institutional and industrial cleaning formulations.
The chemical designation of the product is C10–C18 Alcohol + about 7 EO.
This statement indicates that fatty alcohols with alkyl chains ranging from C10 to C18 are ethoxylation with an average of about seven moles of ethylene oxide.
Lutensol M 7 is not a single pure low molecular weight chemical.
It is a mixture of technical surfactants consisting of homologs with different chain lengths and ethoxylation distribution.
Therefore, it is not technically correct to give a single exact molecular formula or a single exact molecular weight for the product.
General chemical structure: RO(CH2CH2O)xH.
Where R represents about C10–C18 alkyl chain, x represents about 7 ethylene oxide units.
BASF defines Lutensol M 7 in the nonionic surfactant and alcohol ethoxylate class in its current product information.
The product is in paste form at room temperature. At about 60 °C, it becomes a liquid with lower viscosity and processable.
Lutensol M 7 is mainly used in laundry detergents, commercial laundry, food service and kitchen hygiene and vehicle and transportation care applications.
The HLB value of the product is approximately 12.9. This value indicates that Lutensol M 7 can provide balanced emulsification and detergency behavior between hydrophobic oily soil and aqueous cleaning phase.
The nonionic character of Lutensol M 7 provides significant formulation advantage.
The hydrophilic part of the molecule is made up of ethylene oxide chains.
The hydrophobic part is the C10–C18 alkyl chain. This structure helps to reduce the interfacial tension between the water and oil phases.
As a result, oily soil can separate from the surface.
Oil droplets can be dispersed in the water phase.
Textile or hard surface wetting can be developed.

Lutensol M 7 can be used in conjunction with anionic surfactants.
It can be combined with amphoteric surfactants.
It can be blended with alcohol ethoxylates with lower or higher EO content and adjusted to HLB, cloud point, foam and detergency profile.
The fact that the product is presented with approximately 100% active matter provides an advantage in highly concentrated formulations.
Higher active surfactant concentration can be achieved compared to surfactant solutions containing carrier water.
However, the paste form at room temperature should be taken into account in the process design.
Controlled heating may be required prior to transfer, pumping, or dosing.
In the BASF technical information, the product becomes a clear liquid at around 60 °C.
Local overheating should be avoided.
Nonionic surfactant systems should not be exposed to extreme temperatures for long periods of time.
The approximate cloud point value of Lutensol M 7 varies depending on the test method used.
A cloud point of around 75 °C was reported for Method E in the old BASF technical information.
Cloud point is an important formulation parameter for nonionic ethoxylate surfactants.

WHAT IS LUTENSOL M 7?

Lutensol M 7 is a nonionic surfactant obtained from the ethoxylation process of C10–C18 fatty alcohols with approximately seven moles of ethylene oxide.
Its manufacturer is BASF. The BASF article number is 30317194.
The product is in the class of alcohol ethoxylates.
Nonionic character means that there is no permanent ionic charge on the surfactant molecule. This property can make it not as sensitive to water hardness as anionic surfactants.
It does not create classical soap precipitation with calcium and magnesium ions. Therefore, it is useful in hard-water cleaning systems.
The hydrophobic moiety of Lutensol M 7 consists of C10–C18 alkyl chain.
Hydrophilic moiety is approximately seven ethylene oxide units.
EO chain establishes hydrogen bonding interaction with water molecules.
Alkyl chain interacts with oily soil or hydrophobic surface.
This amphiphilic structure allows the surfactant to adsorb to the water-oil interface.
Surface tension decreases. Wetting increases. Oily soil emulsification becomes easier.
Lutensol M 7 has an HLB value of approximately 12.9.
This level generally provides balanced hydrophilicity for oil-in-water emulsification and detergency.
Since the product is not strong hydrophobe, water compatibility is high.
However, phase behavior should be evaluated separately in formulations containing high electrolyte or high solvent concentration.
The product is in paste form. It may show a whitish or slightly cloudy paste appearance at approximately room temperature.
It can become a clear liquid around 60 °C. Lutensol M 7 is a high-active surfactant.
It is given with approximately 100% concentration.
For this reason, the addition amount can be considered directly as active nonionic surfactant in the formulation calculation.

CHEMICAL STRUCTURE AND MOLECULAR PROPERTIES OF LUTENSOL M 7

Lutensol M 7 is an alkyl polyethylene glycol ether mixture.
General molecular structure: It can be idealized as R-O-(CH2CH2O)7-H.
The R alkyl group can range from C10 to C18.
Commercial product contains different chain-length homologs and different EO distribution.
For this reason, the structure should not be considered as a single pure molecule.
The alkyl segment is hydrophobic part.
Ethylene oxide chain is hydrophilic part.
The terminal hydroxyl group also contributes to hydrophilic interaction.
EO chain performs hydrogen bonding with water.
Establishes van der Waals interactions with alkyl chain oils, greases and hydrophobic soils.
When the surfactant adsorbs to the water-oil interface, the interfacial free energy decreases.
Oil droplet formation becomes easy.
Dispersed oil droplets can be stabilized in micellar structures.
The water-solid surface contact angle may decrease during wetting.
Therefore, textile fiber or hard surface can get wet faster.
The HLB value of Lutensol M 7 indicates that it is on the water-compatible side of the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance.

Lower EO alcohol ethoxylates may show a more lipophilic character.
Higher EO products become more hydrophilic.
M7 offers detergency-oriented medium-high hydrophilicity between these two behaviors.
Nonionic ethoxylates show temperature-sensitive hydration behavior.
As the temperature increases, EO chain hydration may decrease.
Clouding may occur above a certain temperature.
Cloud point is an indicator of this phase behavior.
For high-temperature industrial cleaners, cloud point is the important selection parameter.
Electrolytes can change the cloud point.
Salts can often reduce nonionic surfactant hydration.
Solvents, on the other hand, can act in different directions.
Therefore, the final formulation cloud point may not be the same as the cloud point value of pure surfactant.

The main properties of Lutensol M 7 at the molecular and colloidal level are:

Amphiphilic structure

C10-C18 hydrophobic chain

Approximately 7 EO hydrophilic chain

Nonionic character

Micelle formation

Oil-water interfacial tension reduction

Surface tension reduction

Wetting improvement

Oily soil solubilization

Emulsification

Since the congealing point is about 17 °C, the product may become harder in cold storage.
This does not mean product degradation.
Homogeneous processable state can be restored with controlled warming and mixing.

HOW DOES LUTENSOL M 7 WORK AT THE MOLECULAR LEVEL?

During the cleaning process, water alone on the oily soil surface may not spread well due to the high interfacial tension.
Lutensol M 7 leans towards the molecules interface.
Hydrophobic alkyl enters the tail oil phase.
The Hydrophilic EO chain remains in the aqueous phase.
Interfacial tension decreases.
The oil film becomes more prone to separating from the surface.
Mechanical agitation shrinks oil droplets.
Surfactant molecules stabilize the nascent oil-water interface.
Soil can be resurfaced without being redeposited in the wash liquor.
It reaches surfactant textile fiber in laundry cleaning.
Fiber wetting evolves.
Hydrophobic contaminants such as sebum, mineral oil, food grease, and cosmetic soil can be removed by emulsification.
In the hard-surface cleaner, the same mechanism supports the removal of grease on stainless steel, tile, painted metal or plastic surface.
It is effective on animal fats, vegetable oils and cooking residues in kitchen cleaner.
In vehicle care, it can contribute to road film, oily contamination and traffic soil removal.
Lutensol M 7 can form foam but is not a low-foam speciality surfactant.
Significant foam volume was reported for M 7 in the BASF old reference test.
For this reason, an antifoam or lower-foam surfactant blend may be required in an automatic machine or high-pressure low-foam cleaning system.

Main functions of Lutensol M 7 at the formulation level:

Surface tension reduction

Wetting

Oil emulsification

Detergency

Soil removal

Soil suspension

Grease removal

Textile wetting

Hard-surface wetting

Hydrophobic soil solubilization

Surfactant blend balancing

Concentrated cleaning systems

USE OF LUTENSOL M 7 IN LAUNDRY DETERGENTS

Laundry detergents are the main use of Lutensol M 7.
Nonionic surfactants are especially powerful in terms of oily and greasy soils removal.
Anionic surfactants can provide different advantages in terms of particulate soil and foam behavior.
For this reason, anionic + nonionic combination is common in liquid laundry detergents.
Lutensol M 7 can add oily soil detergency to the anionic system.
Performance stability can be supported in hard water conditions.
Removal of body soil, cooking oil and cosmetic residues on cotton, polyester and blended fabrics can be improved.
Processing temperature is important because Lutensol M 7 is a high-active paste in liquid detergent formulation.
The product can be added to the main batch by controlled heating or pre-dilution.
Anionic surfactant, hydrotrope and solvent presence phase alter stability.
Electrolyte loading can affect cloud point and viscosity.
Therefore, if a clear phase is targeted in concentrate formulation, a phase diagram or stability screening should be performed.
Enzyme-containing laundry detergents should be evaluated separately in terms of surfactant package enzyme stability.
Lutensol M 7 is not an enzyme stabilizer by itself.
Compatibility with builders, chelators, polymers and optical brighteners should be checked through pilot formulation.

USE OF LUTENSOL M 7 IN CULINARY, DEGREASER AND INDUSTRIAL CLEANERS

Kitchen hygiene formulations contain heavy oil and food soil.
Lutensol M 7's hydrophobic alkyl chain interacts with vegetable oil, animal fat, and cooked grease.
EO chain provides aqueous phase compatibility.
Therefore, degreasing performance may develop.
Alkaline builders can chemically support grease removal.
Sodium carbonate can be used together with sodium metasilicate or alkalinity source and surfactant package.
Stability test should be performed as high alkalinity may affect nonionic surfactant phase behavior.
Glycol ethers or other approved solvents in solvent-containing degreasers can increase oil penetration.
Lutensol M 7 helps to transfer loosened soil to the aqueous phase.
This synergy provides strong industrial degreasing.
Vehicle cleaner includes traffic film hydrocarbon, road grime and oily particulate mixture.
It contributes to nonionic surfactant oil component removal.
A balanced cleaning package can be created by blending it with anionic surfactant and chelator.
In high-pressure vehicle wash systems, the foam profile should be checked separately.

IS LUTENSOL M 7 USED IN FOOD, COSMETIC AND PHARMACEUTICAL APPLICATIONS?

Lutensol M 7 is positioned by BASF as a home care and I&I surfactant.
It is not a food ingredient.
It should not be used as a food additive.
The expression food service and kitchen hygiene application does not mean adding it to food as an ingredient.
This expression refers to the use of commercial kitchen and food-service cleaning products.
As a cosmetic INCI raw material, its main positioning is not personal-care formulation.
Alcohol ethoxylates can find personal care or industrial applications within different technical grades, but the cosmetic suitability of Lutensol M 7 exact trade grade should not be assumed without separate documentation.
It is not a pharmaceutical excipient.
It should not be considered as a pharmaceutical-grade excipient.
If food-contact surface cleaner is targeted, final formulation rinsing requirement, residue limits and local detergent regulations should be evaluated separately.

Chemical description C10–C18 Alcohol + is about 7 EO.
The overall structure is RO(CH2CH2O)xH, and x is about 7.
Since the commercial product is a homologous mixture, it is not defined by a single molecular formula or a single definite molecule weight.
The average molar mass is about 500 g/mol.
The HLB is approximately 12.9.
Lutensol M 7 is in paste form at room temperature.
At about 60 °C, it becomes a clear processable liquid.
Active concentration is approximately 100%.
Density is approximately 0.97 g/cm3, 50 °C.
Viscosity is about 50 mPa·s, 60 °C.
The hydroxyl number is approximately 111 mg KOH/g.
The congealing point is approximately 17 °C, the dropping point is approximately 28 °C and the flash point is >150 °C.
Surface tension was reported as approximately 29 mN/m, 1 g/L, and 23 °C.
The main functions of the product are wetting, emulsification, oily-soil removal and detergency.
BASF's current product page lists laundry, commercial laundry, food service and kitchen hygiene and vehicle and transportation care applications.
Lutensol M 7 can be blended with anionic and different nonionic surfactants to create a balanced cleaning system.
Lower-EO alcohol ethoxylates can increase oily-soil affinity, while higher-EO products can change water compatibility.
M 7 provides medium-high hydrophilicity and strong general-purpose detergency within this spectrum.
Since the product is paste, handling temperature is important.
A homogeneous processable state can be achieved with controlled warming and mixing.
Local overheating should be avoided.
Lutensol M 7 is listed in current sustainability positioning with bio-based surfactant, EU Ecolabel evaluation declaration available, Nordic Swan suitable and optionally RSPO certified options.
When purchasing Lutensol M 7, exact BASF product identity, product number 30317194, active matter, HLB, cloud point, physical form, handling requirement, TDS, SDS, COA and sustainability documents must be verified together.
Companies planning to supply Lutensol M 7 from Ataman Kimya are recommended to confirm the current product and offer conditions by sharing final cleaning application, surfactant dosage, foam requirement, process temperature, electrolyte/solvent loading and certification needs.
