LUVISKOL K 30

Luviskol K 30 is a water-soluble white powder homopolymer produced by BASF with a K value of approximately 30. This product, identified by CAS No 9003-39-8, is used as a hair styling film former in the cosmetics industry; and as a stick adhesive and water-soluble adhesive component in the adhesive industry.
Also known as polyvinylpyrrolidone K 30, this product is compatible with cationic, anionic and other nonionic cosmetic polymers thanks to its non-ionic structure. Luviskol K 30 is especially preferred in hair gels, wetlook gels, hair mousses, pump sprays and liquid hair stylers to provide normal to strong hold.
Being a medium molecular weight type makes Luviskol K 30 a balanced option that provides stronger hold than low K-value types and is easier to handle than high K-value types. When used in conjunction with carbomer-type thickeners, it helps achieve high clarity in gel formulations.
The polymer chain consists of repeating vinylpyrrolidone units, and the molar mass of the monomer unit is 111.14 g/mol. According to BASF data, the average molecular weight of Luviskol K 30 is approximately 45,000 g/mol (± 5,000).

WHAT IS LUVISKOL K 30?

Luviskol K 30 is a homopolymer soluble in water, ethanol and isopropanol, obtained by radical polymerization of the monomer vinylpyrrolidone. According to BASF's know-how, the product is defined as polyvinylpyrrolidone for cosmetic applications and its physical form is white powder.
Luviskol K 30 is produced from synthetic raw materials (based on mineral oil and natural gas). The product does not contain preservatives, antioxidants or solvents. Its composition contains 95-100% polymers and 0-5% water by weight; therefore, it can be considered as about 100% active ingredient in formulation calculations.
The polymer is nonionic; that is, there is no permanent ionic charge on the chain. Thanks to this feature, Luviskol K 30 can be used with cationic substances (e.g. some disinfectants and basic dyes) as opposed to anionic colloids. BASF also states that Luviskol K 30 tends to bind dyestuffs in such uses.
The K-value is an indicator associated with the average molecular weight of the polymer and the viscosity of the solution. For Luviskol K 30, BASF specifies a K-value in the range of 27.0-33.0 in 1% aqueous solution. According to BASF, in the Luviskol K product line, as the molecular weight increases, the grip (forming strength) also increases.
Luviskol K 30 is not a preservative, disinfectant or surfactant. Its main role is to form films, provide hold, thicken, and act as a binder or adhesive in hair styling formulations. BASF also states that Luviskol K products are not intended for use in drug formulations.

CHEMICAL STRUCTURE AND MOLECULAR PROPERTIES OF LUVISKOL K 30

Luviskol K 30 is a linear polymer composed of the monomer N-vinylpyrrolidone. Each repeat unit has a five-membered lactam (pyrrolidone) ring attached to the main chain. The carbonyl and nitrogen group in this ring gives the polymer a strong polarity.
The high polarity of the lactam ring allows Luviskol K 30 to dissolve in water and alcohols. At the same time, the polymer can interact with a large number of other molecules as a hydrogen bond acceptor; therefore, it can form strong bonds with many dyes, active substances and surfaces.
Because the main chain of the polymer consists of carbon-carbon bonds, Luviskol K 30 is highly resistant to hydrolysis and stable over a wide pH range. In BASF product information, this property is stated as pH insensitivity.
Molecular weight directly impacts the application performance of Luviskol K 30. Higher molecular weight types provide more viscous solutions and stronger grip; Luviskol K 30, on the other hand, offers a balance between machinability and grip due to its medium molecular weight.
The polymer is amorphous and does not crystallize. Therefore, when dried, Luviskol K 30 solution forms a clear, hard and shiny film. The film is resoluble in water, which allows for easy rinsing on the hair.
Luviskol K 30 is hygroscopic; that is, it can absorb moisture from the environment. Its moisture retention can improve the flexibility of the film, but in high humidity environments it can lead to loss of hold in hair styling and softening of adhesives.

Luviskol K 30 can be dissolved in water even at high concentrations, and the solution viscosity depends on the concentration and K value. Since there may be lumps during the addition of the powder to the water, it is recommended to sprinkle the powder slowly into the mixed water.
Luviskol K 30 is resistant to heat for a short time, but color change may occur when heated at high temperature for a long time. Therefore, the temperature must be controlled in processes that require drying and melting.
The values are for general technical demonstration purposes; some values, such as density and glass transition temperature, are taken from general polymer sources. For the exact specification, the current BASF technical data sheet and the batch analysis certificate should be taken as basis.

HOW DOES LUVISKOL K 30 WORK AT THE MOLECULAR LEVEL?

When Luviskol K 30 dries out of solution, the polymer chains become tangled and form a continuous film on the hair, paper, or other surface. This film holds the styled hair in place or glues the two surfaces together.
In hair styling, Luviskol K 30 spreads over the surface of the hair fibers and forms a fine polymer network between the hair strands as water or alcohol evaporates. This network provides the hold effect that maintains the shape of the hair. The hardness and holding strength of the polymer depends on its molecular weight.
The carbonyl oxygens in the polymer's lactam groups can form hydrogen bonds with hair keratin and water. Luviskol K 30 adheres well to the surface and also draws moisture from the environment thanks to this. This moisture-stretched film can reduce hair feeling brittle and stiff to some extent.
In gel formulations, Luviskol K 30 works in conjunction with cross-linked polyacrylate thickeners such as carbomer. Carbomer forms the gel skeleton, while Luviskol K 30 provides film and hold; BASF states that these combinations are suitable for clear gels.
In adhesive applications, Luviskol K 30 solution wets the surface, and when it dries, it bonds strongly to polar surfaces (paper, glass, metal). It can be used in moistened adhesives as it can dissolve when wetted again with water.
When used as a dispersant and protective colloid, Luviskol K 30 adsorbs to solid particle surfaces, preventing particles from sticking together and improving the stability of suspensions. Its tendency to bind dyestuffs can be advantageous in these applications, but should be considered in hair dye and color protection.

The main functions of Luviskol K 30 at the formulation level:

Hair styling and holding

Forming clear, hard and glossy film

Consistency support in gels and lotions

Being a binder and adhesive

Protective colloid and dispersing effect

Support for emulsion and suspension stabilization

Lubricating effect

Providing clarity in water-based systems

IN WHICH SECTORS IS LUVISKOL K 30 USED?

Luviskol K 30 is a polymer used in the hair care and personal care, adhesive, and various technical formulation sectors.

Major applications:

Hair gels and wetlook gels

Hair mousses (mousse)

Pump hair sprays

Liquid hair styling products

Conditioner and styling lotions

Hair dye and coloring formulations

Consistency support in shampoo and similar products

Stick adhesives

Dampable adhesives

Water-soluble hot melt adhesives

Flexible pads that stick to the skin

Pigment and dye dispersions

Ink and coating additives

In BASF's product information, the main application of the Luviskol K series is hair styling. It is stated in hair gel formulations, especially wetlook gels, hair mousses, pump sprays and liquid hair stylers, that it provides a normal to strong hold.
Every industry expects different performance from Luviskol K 30. The cosmetic formulator focuses on clarity, grip, comb transition and rinseability; the adhesive manufacturer focuses on bond strength, dissolution time and moisture behavior; the ink and coating manufacturer focuses on dispersion and film properties.

USE OF LUVISKOL K 30 IN HAIR STYLING AND PERSONAL CARE APPLICATIONS

Hair styling is the most important use for Luviskol K 30. BASF advertises the product as a styling agent suitable for hair gels, conditioners, mousses, pump sprays, and liquid hair styling products.
In hair gels, Luviskol K 30 is often used in combination with carbomer. Carbomer forms the gel structure after neutralization; Luviskol K 30 provides hold and shine to the hair. BASF states that Luviskol K products are compatible with carbomer-type thickeners and other cross-linked polyacrylates.
High polymer concentration in wetlook gels provides a wet appearance and strong hold. In such formulations, the Luviskol K 30 ratio should be evaluated together in terms of the viscosity of the gel and the tendency to flaking it leaves on the hair after drying.
In hair mousses and pump sprays, Luviskol K 30 is used dissolved in water or a water-ethanol mixture. In spray formulations, the amount of polymer affects spray quality; excess polymer can clog the nozzle or distort the spray pattern.
Since Luviskol K 30 is nonionic, it is compatible with cationic conditioning agents. BASF states that Luviskol K products can be combined with cationic substances compared to anionic colloids. On the other hand, since Luviskol K 30 has a tendency to bind dyestuffs, stability and color loss tests should be performed on colored products.
In hair dye and coloring products, Luviskol K 30 can also be used as a thickening and dispersant. In these applications, the interaction of the polymer with the dye should be verified by trying.
Reduced grip in humid environments is an important design parameter in cosmetic formulation, as Luviskol K 30 may exhibit hygroscopic behavior at high humidity. If higher moisture resistance is targeted, a blend with vinylpyrrolidone-vinyl acetate copolymers or other hair styling polymers may be considered.

THE USE OF LUVISKOL K 30 IN ADHESIVE APPLICATIONS

In the adhesive industry, Luviskol K 30 appears in BASF product demonstrations as a polymer that can be used in stick adhesives, moistenable adhesives, water-soluble hot melt adhesives and flexible pads that adhere to the skin.
In stick adhesives, Luviskol K 30 is used in conjunction with a soap-based gel matrix, contributing to bonding strength and film formation after drying. The polymer's water-soluble nature makes it easy to clean up adhesive residues with water.
In remoistenable adhesives, Luviskol K 30 solution is applied to a surface and dried. When wetted again with water, it becomes sticky. This behavior can be used in products such as envelopes, labels and stamps.
In water-soluble hot melt adhesives, Luviskol K 30 can work as the hydrophilic component of the polymer matrix. Compatibility with other polymers, plasticizers, and additives should be attempted in such systems.
Polymers that are advertised as toxicologically safe, such as Luviskol K 30, are preferred for flexible pads that adhere to the skin. However, for use in medical or skin-contact products, the product's proper documentation and regulatory compliance must be verified separately.
Because Luviskol K 30 is hygroscopic, it can cause the adhesive film to soften or increase its adhesion by absorbing moisture. This property is an advantage for moistenable adhesives, but it can be a disadvantage in applications where moisture resistance is required.

USE OF LUVISKOL K 30 IN DISPERSION, BINDER AND OTHER TECHNICAL APPLICATIONS

The polyvinylpyrrolidone family of polymers is used in a variety of technical applications as a dispersant, protective colloid, binder, and film former. Luviskol K 30 can also be considered for such uses; however, for each application, conformity information should be obtained from the manufacturer and trials should be conducted.
In pigment and dye dispersions, Luviskol K 30 can adsorb to particle surfaces to improve dispersion and suspension stability. In ink and coating formulations, it can contribute to flow and surface smoothness.
In industries such as ceramics, glass, and fiberglass, polyvinylpyrrolidone polymers can be used as binders and temporary coating materials. Luviskol K 30 can be evaluated for its water solubility and film-forming properties in such uses.
In emulsion polymerization and adhesive dispersions, Luviskol K 30 can be tried as a protective colloid and thickener.
The main application of Luviskol K 30 positioned by BASF is cosmetics and hair styling. For this reason, the quality and documentation required for the batch to be used in technical applications must be confirmed from the supplier.

IS LUVISKOL K 30 USED IN FOOD, COSMETICS AND PHARMACEUTICAL APPLICATIONS?

Luviskol K 30 is a polyvinylpyrrolidone grade offered by BASF for use in cosmetic applications and is listed with the name INCI PVP in cosmetic formulations. Compliance with the relevant legislation and safety assessment in cosmetic use should be made on the final product.
BASF states that Luviskol K products are not intended for use in pharmaceutical preparations. Polyvinylpyrrolidone for use in the pharmaceutical field requires pharmaceutical-grade products such as Kollidon 30. Therefore, Luviskol K 30 should not be used as an excipient in drug formulations.
In the food field, polyvinylpyrrolidone is identified by the number E 1201 for separately produced products in food quality. Luviskol K 30, on the other hand, should not be used as a food additive as it is offered for cosmetic purposes.
Manufacturer and regulatory requirements for food, pharmaceutical or medical device applications other than cosmetic use related to Luviskol K 30 should be evaluated separately.

WHAT PROBLEMS CAN LUVISKOL K 30 SOLVE?

Insufficient grip on the hair

Luviskol K 30 forms a film on the hair, providing normal to strong hold and offering more defined styling than low molecular weight polymers.

Clarity problem in gel

Luviskol K 30 forms clear solutions in water and alcohol and is compatible with carbomer gels; therefore, it can be used in transparent gel formulations.

Incompatibility with cationic components

Anionic polymers can precipitate with cationic substances. Luviskol K 30, which is nonionic, may be a more compatible option in such systems.

Hard and crispy film after drying

Thanks to its hygroscopic structure, Luviskol K 30 film can stretch by absorbing moisture; the film hardness can be adjusted by adding the appropriate plasticizer to the formulation.

Poor adhesion on paper or cardboard surfaces

Luviskol K 30 adheres well to fleece surfaces and can be used in moistened adhesives.

Pigment precipitation

Luviskol K 30 can adsorb to particle surfaces as a protective colloid and contribute to dispersion stability.

The need for water cleanability in the adhesive

Because of its water solubility, adhesive residues containing Luviskol K 30 can be removed with water.

Excessive residue (exfoliation) on the hair

A high Luviskol K 30 ratio can leave a white residue when dry. The polymer ratio, plasticizer and thickener balance must be optimized.

It should not be assumed that every quality and every process condition will give the same result. Actual performance should be verified by pilot and application trials.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN USING LUVISKOL K 30

Luviskol K 30 is a non-hazardous polymer powder, but caution should be exercised regarding issues such as fine dust inhalation, humidification, and clumping during dissolution.

Usage considerations:

Luviskol K 30 powder should be added to the mixed water slowly and in a way that does not clump.

Stirring time should be left until dissolution is complete.

The product should be stored in its original closed packaging, protected from moisture.

Open packaging should be tightly closed immediately after use.

Dust formation and accumulation should be prevented.

In carbomer gels, the carbomer must first be dispersed and neutralized, and Luviskol K 30 compatibility must be tested.

In colored products, the dyestuff binding tendency of Luviskol K 30 should be tested.

Moisture testing should be performed as loss of grip can be expected at high humidity.

For formulations containing ethanol, the alcohol content and solubility should be checked.

Since it does not contain preservatives, appropriate preservative system should be added for microbiological stability in aqueous solutions.

It should not be heated at high temperature for a long time.

Residual vinylpyrrolidone and color values should be checked via COA.

The product number must be verified 30035086.

TDS, SDS and COA should be examined.

When Luviskol K 30 aqueous solution is prepared, it can create an environment suitable for microorganism growth over time. For this reason, the prepared solutions should be used in a short time or protected with an appropriate protective system.

Spills on the floor while working with a ready-made solution can create slipperiness; the spilled material should be cleaned immediately.

ALTERNATIVES AND COMPARISON OF LUVISKOL K 30

When choosing an alternative for Luviskol K 30, it is not enough to have polyvinylpyrrolidone alone. Molecular weight (K value), moisture behavior, film hardness, clarity, dyestuff interaction and quality class (cosmetic or pharmaceutical) should be evaluated together.

LUVISKOL K 30 AND LUVISKOL K 17

Luviskol K 17 is a lower molecular weight type from the same polymer family. It gives low-viscosity solutions and provides a softer grip. According to BASF, the grip increases as the molecular weight increases; therefore, Luviskol K 30 provides stronger forming.
Luviskol K 17 can be used at a higher concentration and the viscosity increase is less. Luviskol K 30 provides medium viscosity and medium-strong hold. By mixing the two, the balance of grip and viscosity can be adjusted.

LUVISKOL K 30 AND LUVISKOL K 90

Luviskol K 90 is a higher molecular weight type. It gives high viscosity even at very low concentration and provides strong hold. The film may feel harder and stickier.
Luviskol K 30 is a lower viscosity and easier to machine option. When looking for a balance between grip and machinability, Luviskol K 30 is more practical; when very strong grip or thickening is required, Luviskol K 90 can be considered.

LUVISKOL K 30 AND LUVISKOL VA 64

Luviskol VA 64 is a copolymer of vinylpyrrolidone and vinyl acetate. Due to its copolymer structure, it has lower hygroscopicity and may have better retention in a humid environment.
Luviskol K 30 absorbs more water because it is a homopolymer; this increases water solubility and rinseability, but can reduce grip at high humidity. By using the two products together, grip and moisture resistance can be balanced.

LUVISKOL K 30 AND LIQUID / SUPER GRADES

BASF also offers aqueous solution forms (such as Luviskol K 30 Super Solution) for Luviskol K 30. The solution forms provide ready-to-use ease of use and eliminate the powder dissolving step.
Luviskol K 30 powder form, on the other hand, provides high active ingredient content, easier storage and transportation, and formulation flexibility. Active ingredient concentration is low in water-containing solutions; therefore, the cost should be compared on the basis of active substance.

LUVISKOL K 30 AND KOLLIDON 30

Kollidon 30 is BASF's pharmaceutical grade povidone product with the same K value and is available with the appropriate documentation for the pharmaceutical industry. BASF states that Luviskol K products are not intended for use in pharmaceutical preparations.
For cosmetic use, Luviskol K 30 may be sufficient; for pharmaceutical, supplementary food or food contact applications, an appropriate quality product such as Kollidon 30 should be selected.

LUVISKOL K 30 AND POLYVINYL ALCOHOL

Polyvinyl alcohol is another water-soluble film-forming polymer. It yields films with high strength and oxygen barrier; however, it may require heating to dissolve and has a high viscosity.
Luviskol K 30 dissolves easily in cold water, is more suitable for hair and skin applications, and the film can be clearer. Polyvinyl alcohol can be considered when mechanical strength or barrier is required.

LUVISKOL K 30 AND POLYQUATERNIUM / ACRYLATE BASED HAIR STYLERS

Polyquaternium and acrylate-based hair styling polymers offer moisture resistance and conditioning properties based on their different ionic structures. Cationic polymers provide conditioning to the hair; acrylate copolymers can improve moisture resistance.
Since Luviskol K 30 is nonionic, it offers a wide range of flexibility in terms of compatibility and works smoothly in most systems. If moisture resistance and conditioning are required, use with these polymers can be considered.

COMPARISON SUMMARY

In terms of grip and viscosity, Luviskol K 30 is a mid-range option between Luviskol K 17 and Luviskol K 90. In terms of moisture resistance, copolymers like Luviskol VA 64 are more advantageous; while in pharmaceutical use, a suitable quality product like Kollidon 30 is required.
In the selection of alternatives, the targeted grip, viscosity, moisture resistance, clarity, legislation and total cost should be evaluated together; laboratory and application trials should be made for each substitute.

TDS contains the general characteristics of the product, while SDS contains safe use and emergency information.
In the event of a change of supplier, Luviskol K 30 should not be replaced by other polyvinylpyrrolidone products bearing only the name K 30. Although K 30 products from different manufacturers may look similar, the quality class (cosmetic, technical, pharmaceutical), residual monomer and color values may be different.

STORAGE AND TRANSPORTATION OF LUVISKOL K 30

Luviskol K 30 should be stored in its original sealed packaging between +10 °C and +25 °C, protected from moisture, as recommended by BASF. Under these conditions, the shelf life of the product is stated as 36 months.
Luviskol K 30 packaging should not be left open because it is a hygroscopic powder. Dust that gets moisture can clump, become difficult to dissolve and change its usage weight. After use, the packaging should be tightly closed and, if possible, kept in a bag and closed.
The storage area should be dry, clean, and protected from direct sunlight. It should not be stored next to strong-smelling products. FIFO should be applied, and batch traceability should be maintained.
When transferring Luviskol K 30 powder, dust generation should be reduced, and general precautions should be taken for fine organic powders against static electricity accumulation. Dust accumulation and spreading of fine dust into the air should be prevented.
The transport classification is generally considered as it is for polymer powders that are not hazardous materials; however, the current classification must be verified from the supplier's SDS document.
In case of spillage, Luviskol K 30 dust should be collected by sweeping or vacuuming, and cleaning should be done carefully as it may form a slippery film in a wet environment. Dust should be prevented from reaching water channels.

LUVISKOL K 30 SAFETY INFORMATION

Luviskol K 30 is a polymer based on polyvinylpyrrolidone. In general PVP safety data sheets, this polymer is often not classified as a hazardous substance. However, Luviskol K 30 should be based on the current BASF SDS document.
The fine powder form can cause nose and throat irritation if inhaled and mechanical irritation if it comes into contact with the eyes. It is recommended to wear a dust mask, safety goggles and gloves when working with Luviskol K 30. Adequate ventilation should be provided where dust is generated.
If dust is inhaled, the person should be taken to fresh air and rested. If symptoms persist, medical attention should be sought. In case of skin contact, Luviskol K 30 should be washed with plenty of soap and water.
In case of eye contact, the eyes should be washed with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, and if there is a contact lens, it should be removed if it can be removed. If irritation persists, an ophthalmologist should be consulted.
If swallowed, the mouth should be rinsed with water and the person should be given plenty of water to drink. If symptoms occur, medical attention should be sought.
Since Luviskol K 30 is a flammable organic polymer, its fine dust may mix with the air and pose a risk of dust explosion. Dust accumulation should be prevented, ignition sources should be kept away. Water mist, foam, carbon dioxide or dry chemical powder may be used in a fire.
In the BASF product specification, vinylpyrrolidone is now limited to a maximum of 100 ppm. On a batch basis, this value must be verified via the COA.
Waste from Luviskol K 30 must be disposed of in accordance with local legislation. The exact hazard statements and transport classification must be determined according to the current SDS.
