LUVISKOL VA 55 E possesses good setting properties.

LUVISKOL VA 55 E is used in hair care like aerosol sprays, pump sprays, lotions, mousses and gels.

Solubility of LUVISKOL VA Grades:
The solubility of PVP VA in water depends on the VP/VA ratio. 
Products with a high vinyl pyridone content (PVP/VA 64 and PVP/VA 73) form clear solutions in water. 

Other varieties can be dispersed in water. 
LUVISKOL VA Grades solutions are slightly acidic. 

Polymers are non-ionic, so they do not need to be neutralized. 
All PVP grades are soluble in ethanol, isopropanol, n-propanol, glycerine, methylene chloride, esters and ketones. 

The residues formed in the cold in their solutions in ethanol and isopropanol are removed again by heating. 
PVP/VA 37 forms clear solutions in ethanol abs., ethanol 96% and ethanol/water (VOC 80% and VOC 55%). 

Solutions in isopropanol are clear, occasionally bluish in tint. 
These products are soluble in ether and aliphatic hydrocarbons without a solvent.

Compatibility with hair sprays of LUVISKOL VA Grades:
PVP/VA types are used as film-forming agents and as fixatives in hair care. 
LUVISKOL VA Grades has excellent properties for both aerosol sprays and non-aerosol products. 

A higher proportion of vinyl prodilon makes the PVP/VA type more hygroscopic than it is. 
The adhesion of PVP/VA films (eg PVP/VA 64 and PVP/VA 73) to the hair increases with the proportion of vinyl prolidone, without adversely affecting the excellent combing and washing (post) properties, thanks to the non-ionic nature of the polymer. 

PVP/VA 37 and PVP/VA 55 are particularly useful for hairsprays whose films must be able to be removed by brushing. 
Even if this hair is lubricated again by brushing, the oil is effectively removed together with the LUVISKOL film.

PVP/VA 64 types and PVP/VA 55 types, on the contrary, are preferred for hair sprays that will have a particularly hydrophilic nature (eg for use in dry weather). 
Also useful for sprays with a high water content. 
Hairsprays for brittle and dry hair should contain a small amount (0.1-0.2%) of a plasticizer such as a polyethylene glycol like Peg 400, or dimethyl phthalate, Luvitol EHO, silicone oils, or other plasticizers commonly used in cosmetics.

Propellant Compatibility of LUVISKOL VA Grades: 
Compatibility of PVP/VA types is well compatible with dimethyl ether. 
Propane, butane, isobutane, pentane DME/pentane and DME/butane mixtures can be used with solvents such as ethanol and methylene chloride.

Compatibility with hair setting solutions and gels:
Due to their good solubility in water, PVP/VA 64 and PVP/VA 73 are particularly useful for liquid hair styling products and gels. 
Moreover, these polymers have excellent forming properties. 

All these PVP/VA types can be completely removed from the hair by straight washing.
Both PVP/VA 64 powder and easy-to-use aqueous solutions of PVP/VA are particularly suitable for alcohol-free formulations. 

They form clear solutions in water at general concentrations (1-5% solid polymer) and are compatible with carbomers. 
The moderate hydrocarbon compatibility of PVP/VA 37 can be improved by adding small amounts of water. 
This makes it likely to get a cloud point below 0°C.

Applications of LUVISKOL VA Grades:
The LUVISKOL VA grades are used in hair care and styling preparations as fixatives and film-forming agents. 
They possess excellent properties both for aerosol sprays and for non-aerosol products. 

The VA 37 and VA 55 grades are particularly suitable for hairsprays. 
For liquid setting lotions, gels and mousses, we can recommend the VA 64 and VA 73 grades.

With increasing vinylpyrrolidone content, the LUVISKOL VA grades become more hygroscopic. 
This gives them stronger adhesion to the hair, but their washing-out and combing-out properties remain excellent because of the nonionic nature of the polymer.

The LUVISKOL VA grades can be stored for at least one year in the unopened original containers at 25 °C

Aqueous solutions of the VA grades with a pH value below 7 can tend to develop mould. 
This can be prevented by adding one of the preservatives commonly used in cosmetics, e.g. a hydroxybenzoate.
