MAGNESIUM NITRATE

Magnesium nitrate refers to inorganic compounds with the formula Mg(NO3)2(H2O)x, where x = 6, 2, and 0.
The principal use of Magnesium nitrate is as a dehydrating agent in the preparation of concentrated nitric acid.
Magnesium nitrate appears as a white crystalline solid.

Occurrence, preparation, structure of Magnesium nitrate
Being highly water soluble, Magnesium nitrate occurs naturally only in mines and caverns as nitromagnesite (hexahydrate form).
The magnesium nitrate used in commerce is made by the reaction of nitric acid and various magnesium salts.

Use of Magnesium nitrate
Its fertilizer grade has 10.5% nitrogen and 9.4% magnesium, so it is listed as 10.5-0-0 + 9.4% Mg.
Fertilizer blends containing magnesium nitrate also have ammonium nitrate, calcium nitrate, potassium nitrate and micronutrients in most cases; these blends are used in the greenhouse and hydroponics trade.

Reactions of Magnesium nitrate
Magnesium nitrate reacts with alkali metal hydroxide to form the corresponding nitrate:

Mg(NO3)2 + 2 NaOH → Mg(OH)2 + 2 NaNO3.

Since magnesium nitrate has a high affinity for water, heating the hexahydrate does not result in the dehydration of the salt, but rather its decomposition into magnesium oxide, oxygen, and nitrogen oxides:

2 Mg(NO3)2 → 2 MgO + 4 NO2 + O2.

The absorption of these nitrogen oxides in water is one possible route to synthesize nitric acid.
Although inefficient, this method does not require the use of any strong acid.
Magnesium nitrate is also occasionally used as a desiccant.

Produces toxic oxides of nitrogen if heated to decomposition.
Used in pyrotechnics.
Magnesium nitrate is the inorganic nitrate salt of magnesium.
Magnesium nitrate has a role as a fertilizer.

Magnesium nitrate is found in mines and caverns as nitromagnesite and can be used in ceramics, printing, chemical and agriculture (as a fertilizer) industries.

Magnesium nitrate is a soluble, pure and crystal fertilizer that is very effective for covering magnesium deficiencies in plants.
Magnesium nitrate contains 15% MgO (9.5% Mg) and 11% nitrogen originating from nitrate.
As nitrate facilitates absorption of magnesium, Magnesium nitrate is a good magnesium transporter.
As Magnesium nitrate is soluble in water, it can be applied via leaves and very suitable for other nutrients.
Magnesium nitrate can be given together with other substances that are given via leaves.

Magnesium nitrate is essential element of chlorophyll that gives the green color of plants; therefore it has utmost importance in production of chlorophyll.
Magnesium nitrate ions are utilized in protein synthesis, enzymatic reactions and production of vitamins.
Magnesium nitrate deficiency causes the below given symptoms:
Initial symptoms start with loss of green color in old leaves.

This is followed with yellowing seen between veins.
In certain plants spots are seen in Magnesium nitrate deficiency.
When there is a high level of Magnesium nitrate deficiency leaves turn their color to reddish purple.
In time green parts get lost.
The first symptoms of Magnesium nitrate deficiency are seen in old leaves.

Magnesium nitrate is a highly water soluble crystalline Magnesium source for uses compatible with nitrates and lower (acidic) pH.
Magnesium nitrate compounds are generally soluble in water.
Magnesium nitrate materials are also oxidizing agents.
When mixed with hydrocarbons, Magnesium nitrate compounds can form a flammable mixture.
Nitrates are excellent precursors for production of ultra high purity compounds and certain catalyst and nanoscale(nanoparticles and nanopowders) materials.

Magnesium nitrate is a highly water-soluble crystalline.

Magnesium nitrate are the excellent precursors for the production of the ultra-high purity compounds and a certain catalyst and the nanoscale materials.
All the metallic Magnesium nitrate are known to be the inorganic salts of a particular given metal cation and the nitrate anion.

Magnesium nitrate is a type of an inorganic nitrate salt of the element magnesium that has a chemical name magnesium nitrate.
Magnesium nitrate is also known as magniosan, magnesium dinitrate or Nntromagnesite.
Magnesium nitrate is widely used in the field of pyrotechnics.
Magnesium nitrate is a type of hygroscopic and crystalline solid which is white in colour.
Magnesium nitrate is highly soluble in water and ethanol and it occurs naturally in the caverns and mines.

Magnesium nitrate is prepared by the reaction of the element magnesium oxide with nitric acid.
The reaction is given as follows:

MgO + 2HNO3   --->  Mg(NO3)2 + H2O

This reaction can also be prepared by using magnesium carbonate or hydroxide in the nitric acid.

Magnesium nitrate can also be prepared by mixing the magnesium sulfate, also known as Epsom salt with calcium nitrate.

MgSO4 + Ca(NO3)2 → Mg(NO3)2 + CaSO4

Filter off the insoluble calcium sulfate from this mixture for obtaining a solution of Mg(NO3)2.
To dry it, you need to heat it gently on a water bath and then cool the concentrated solution.
Then use a seed crystal for obtaining crystals of the compound and then remove the excess water using a vacuum.
By adding nitric acid to magnesium oxide, hydroxide or carbonate it will give you magnesium nitrate.

Anhydrous Magnesium nitrate can be easily obtained by boiling the hydrated form in the concentrated nitric acid, though this process has not been confirmed yet.
Passing nitrogen dioxide through the heated magnesium oxide at 100 °C should also give magnesium nitrate anhydrous and nitric oxide.
Another process would be by mixing the anhydrous calcium or barium nitrate that is dissolved in anhydrous methanol or ethanol, with anhydrous magnesium sulfate.
