Burnt magnesia is magnesium oxide, in the form of a fine white powder, obtained as a result of firing magnesite and dolomite minerals. In crystalline form, MgO is practically insoluble in water and reacts with difficulty with acids, but at the same time, in powder form, it easily dissolves in them, and in water it gradually turns into hydroxide. The product is fire and explosion proof. It has a melting point of 2825 ° C and a boiling point of 3600 ° C.

Application

Burnt magnesia is widely used in tire, rubber, chemical, electrical, medical, food and other industries. In the production of rubbers, magnesia is used as a filler, an activator for vulcanization of rubbers and a vulcanizing agent. Magnesia reduces stickiness (when used in atmospheric conditions of light butyl rubber vulcanizers), reduces water resistance, and in large quantities acts as an amplifier that reduces heat generation of rubbers. In industry it is used for the production of refractories, cements, refining of petroleum products. They are used as refractory materials for the manufacture of refractory ceramics and crucibles.
