Magnolia Bark Extract is hydroscopic and should be protected against moisture.
As you might have gathered from its name, Magnolia Bark Extract refers to the bark of the magnolia tree — a native of East and Southeast Asia.
This tree belongs to the Magnoliaceae family and can grow to a mature height from 16 ft up to 80 ft.

You can easily identify the magnolia tree from its large and fragrant flowers that often reach 8 inches in diameter.
Along with the bark, sometimes these flowers and leaves are also used for making medicine.
The scientific name of Magnolia Bark Extract is Magnolia officinalis.

The Chinese also call this herb "Houpu" — referring to the thick (hou) bark that comes from the unadorned (pu) part of the tree.
Its other names are magnolia cortex, cucumber tree, honoki, and swamp sassafras.
Those who practice traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) often harvest the bark in April and June.

They do it by peeling or cutting the bark from the roots, stems, and branches of the tree.
While the stem barks are decocted to a slight extent in boiling water, the branch and root barks are dried in the shade.
All these barks are then stacked up in a wet area.

Once their inner surface turns dark brown or purplish brown, the TCM practitioners steam, roll, and dry them.
This dried bark — known for Magnolia Bark Extract's sharp smell and bitter taste — is then soaked in a traditional medicine tincture for oral use.
Today, you can also find this herb in the medical stores sold as bundles of 4 inches long magnolia bark strips.

HOW WAS MAGNOLIA BARK EXTRACT USED HISTORICALLY IN TRADITIONAL MEDICINE?
The extract of the Magnolia Bark Extract has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine.
During the 7th century, monks in the Chinese Buddhist temples grew these trees in their gardens for use in treating conditions like depression, asthma, muscle pain, and headache.

Magnolia Bark Extract was also valued in TCM for its ability to reduce inflammation, anxiety, and bloating.
Within Kampo or traditional Japanese medicine, Magnolia Bark Extract's main role was that of a digestive supplement.
Magnolia Bark Extract was also used in Native American medicine as an antimalarial herb.

The first recorded mention of the herb was made in the ancient Chinese herb guide "Shennong Bencao Jing" around 100 A.D.
Magnolia Bark Extract was said to treat "fright qi" — a condition caused by emotional distress due to fear and anxiety.
Later, Magnolia Bark Extract was described in many famous Chinese medical texts such as the "Jingui Yaolue" and the "Shanghan Lun".

Today, Magnolia Bark Extract is still used in these two traditional medicinal formulas:
*Banxia Houpo Tang:
This Chinese formula is said to move stagnant qi in the solar plexus, head, and throat area.

*Saiboku-To:
This Japanese formula has anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce asthma symptoms.
In the western world, the magnolia tree was first seen in North Carolina during the 16th century.
Later, it was carried to England.
The tree got its scientific name from the name of Pierre Magnol, a well-known French physician and botanist of the 17th century.

DOSING OF MAGNOLIA BARK EXTRACT:
Magnolia Bark Extract is commercially available in the United States and throughout Europe.
Dosage varies depending on the condition treated, with weight loss products containing Magnolia Bark Extract available mostly in powder form.

Several strengths are available for Relora, a patented blend marketed as "a natural stress management supplement" that includes Magnolia Bark Extract.
Dosing recommendations include taking a 300 mg capsule of Relora 2 to 3 times per day.
One small, randomized, controlled study treated patients with one 60 mg tablet of Magnolia Bark Extract daily to help relieve menopausal symptoms.

MAGNOLIA BARK EXTRACT BENEFITS FOR THE SKIN:
Magnolia bark extract is one of the most potent anti-wrinkle ingredients.
Magnolia Bark Extract is obtained from the bark of the Magnolia officinalis plant and it contains high amounts of organic compounds magnolol and honokiol, which are said to be up to 1000 times more potent in antioxidants than vitamin E.

The anti-inflammatory properties of magnolol and honokiol also effectively help to fight and inhibit the activation of NF-KB, a key facilitator in the aging and chronic inflammation processes.

*Anti-Oxidant and Anti-Bacterial
Magnolia Bark Extract also has anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties, which helps to neutralise free radicals and decelerate the aging process.
Normally, the body can handle free radicals, but if antioxidants are unavailable, or if too many free radicals have been produced they can damage our cells.

*Soft and Even Complexion
Magnolia Bark Extract is also used in skin care products to help fade dark spots and pigmentation, and to give the appearance of a soft and even complexion.

WHAT BENEFITS DOES MAGNOLIA BARK EXTRACT HAVE?
Inflammation has negative effects as Magnolia Bark Extract’s associated with the consistent production of free radicals in the skin.
These are known to be instrumental in the development of wrinkles, smaller fine lines, sagging skin, blotchiness and skin redness.

Magnolia bark extract has been used for centuries for its anti-inflammatory purposes in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Celebrated as a herbal remedy for treating the stagnation of qi (energy), for digestive disorders, anxiety and allergic diseases, Magnolia bark extract can also help to prevent the loss of skin elasticity and reduce reddening of the skin.

IDENTIFICATION OF MAGNOLIA BARK EXTRACT:
It is a deciduous tree growing to 20 m in height.
The bark is thick and brown, but does not fissure.
The leaves are broad, ovate, 20–40 cm long, and 11–20 cm broad.
The flowers are fragrant and 10–15 cm wide, with 9–12 (rarely to 17) white tepals, and appear from May to June.

The two varieties are:
Magnolia Bark Extract has leaves with an acute apex.
Magnolia officinalis var. biloba has leaves with a notch at the apex.

This variety does not appear in the wild, and is only known in cultivation.
It is possibly not a true variety at all, but actually a cultigen instead, though this has yet to be determined.

M. officinalis differs very little from Magnolia obovata; the only difference consistently observed between the two is that the fruit aggregate of M. officinalis has a rounded base, while that of M. obovata has an acute base.
Further research may or may not eventually determine if M. officinalis should be treated as a subspecies of M. obovata.

6 POTENTIAL HEALTH BENEFITS OF MAGNOLIA BARK EXTRACT:
1. May reduce stress and anxiety
Magnolia Bark Extract has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety.

In a 2022 study, a supplement containing Magnolia Bark Extract and phellodendron bark (Phellodendron amurense) was used in 56 people who were moderately stressed.
Salivary cortisol, a stress indicator, was decreased by 18% by the herb combination compared with a placebo.
The combination also improved the mood of people who took the supplement.

In another study, the same Magnolia Bark Extract/philodendron mixture was proven to lower anxiety in premenopausal female adults.
Although anxiety was temporarily reduced, there was no lasting effect after participants stopped using the blend.
Magnolia Bark Extract was able to control brain protein levels that are an indication of anxious behavior.

2. May improve sleep
Magnolia Bark Extract may help improve sleep quality by reducing anxiety.
In a different study on the effects of magnolol, researchers observed similar results.
The effectiveness of Magnolia Bark Extract for promoting sleep needs to be confirmed by human clinical trials.

3. May support gut health
Magnolia Bark Extract promotes digestion and gut health.
Although Magnolia Bark Extract may support healthy gut flora, large-scale human studies are needed to confirm these effects in humans.

4. May improve weight loss
Magnolia Bark Extract may promote weight loss by reducing stress.
In a clinical experiment, Magnolia Bark Extract exerted a weight loss effect on healthy, overweight, premenopausal women who had a tendency to overeat when stressed.
Researchers discovered that Magnolia Bark Extract reduced evening cortisol levels, a stress indicator, which resulted in a reduction in nighttime snacking.

Another study reported that people who experienced moderate stress consumed fewer calories as a result of taking a supplement that contains Magnolia Bark Extract.
Participants who took 500 mg per day (250 mg in the morning and 250 mg in the evening) experienced better weight loss.

5. May have anticancer properties
In higher doses, Magnolia Bark Extract may have anticancer properties, although studies to prove this benefit are lacking.
Honokiol was successful in preventing the growth of skin cancer.
According to researchers, the anticancer properties of Magnolia Bark Extract were caused by its capacity to activate specific proteins.

Laboratory tests have also demonstrated the antitumor effects of active Magnolia Bark Extract components.
In one study, the combination of honokiol and tumor radiotherapy reduced lung tumors by 78%

In vitro and in vivo studies have reported that honokiol may prevent the growth of breast cancer cells and enhance the effects of other breast cancer treatments.
Another in vitro experiment that used honokiol on oral cancer cells had positive outcomes.
Honokiol was able to inhibit cell proliferation while inducing cancer cell death.

Although initial lab research suggests that Magnolia Bark Extract components, particularly honokiol, may aid in the prevention of cancer, more extensive research is needed to confirm whether Magnolia Bark Extract is beneficial in preventing cancer.

6. Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties
Researchers discovered that both magnolol and honokiol induced anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
At concentrations of 1 and 10 g/mL, the bark extract of Magnolia Bark Extract proved effective in lowering the release of inflammatory chemicals, and magnolignan B had the strongest antioxidative potential.

OTHER BENEFITS OF MAGNOLIA BARK EXTRACT:

*Maintaining brain health:
One of the active compounds in Magnolia Bark Extract, may prevent the death of brain cells and stop the buildup of harmful proteins that are linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

HOW DOES MAGNOLIA BARK EXTRACT WORK?
There are two biologically active compounds in Magnolia Bark Extract that scientists believe are responsible for its beneficial effects.

*Magnolol: One effect of magnolol is to act upon neurochemical receptors in the brain.
Researchers believe that magnolol could help restore the normal function of chemicals in the brain, which could help with anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

*Honokiol:
After a long history of use in Asian medicine, honokiol is being studied for Magnolia Bark Extract's potential uses for anxiety, pain, diseases affecting the blood vessels, seizures, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Research has shown that magnolol and honokiol interact with brain chemistry in a way that promotes relaxation and sleep.
Specifically, these compounds – especially honokiol – interact with a brain chemical called GABA in a way that is similar to sedative drugs like benzodiazepines.

Lab studies have also shown that magnolol and honokiol also interact with cannabinoid receptors in the brain.
Cannabinoid receptors are sites on nerve cells that are concentrated in the parts of the brain that influence pleasure, perception, and coordination.
