MANDARIN OIL

CAS No. : 8008-31-9
FEMA:2657

Mandarins are citrus fruits which are also known as Mandarin oranges or Tangerines.
However, there is a slight difference. Mandarins are more yellow in color and come with pips, while tangerines are more orange in color and come without pips.
So, the mandarin essential oil is also called tangerine essential oil.
The botanical name of both of these plants is Citrus Reticulata, which shows that they are the same.
As the name suggests, mandarin plants are native to China.
From there, they went to Europe and now Italy is one of the biggest producers of Mandarin Oil.
The essential oil is extracted by cold compression of the fresh peels of these fruits and contains alpha-thujone, alpha pinene, beta pinene, camphene, citral, citronellal, gamma terpinolene, geranial, geraniol, limonene, linalool, methyl anthranilate, myrcene, nerol, sabinene, and terpineol.
Mandarins have a special place in Chinese culture as they were given as gifts to the Mandarins (the name given to Chinese officials under the king)

Description of Mandarin Oil
Mandarin Oil – Cold Pressed is a pure essential oil, cold-pressed extracted from the peel of fully mature, ripened mandarins (botanically named Citrus reticulata).
The resulting oil carries a dark-orange to red appearance with a characteristic sweet citrus aroma.
Mandarin Oil is suitable to use as is or by blending with a carrier oil or essential oil of your choice.
Red Mandarin Oil is the sweetest of the three Mandarin oils offered in the industry, and is said to yield one of the most calming aromas among all essential oils.
Citrus essential oils, such as mandarin oil, are widely used in aromatherapy, cosmetic formulations, personal care products, and throughout the food and beverage industry.
The primary flavoring and fragrance component of Mandarin oil is d-limonene, a constituent with potential antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, sought after for natural cleaning products and insecticides.
Additionally, Mandarin oil naturally contains gamma-terpinene, a chemical with potential antioxidant, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory benefits.
The industrial applications for essential oils such as mandarin are plentiful and growing.

What is Mandarin Essential Oil?
Essential oils with flower and orange.
The healing benefits of mandarin essential oil go back thousands of years.
The mandarin fruit has been cultivated in China for thousands of years.
Mandarin Oil was an integral part of ancient Chinese healing techniques and medicine.
The fruit is very similar to the tangerine.
Although there are differences between the fruits in terms of color and taste, you can often use them to replace or complement one another.
Mandarin essential oil is commonly used as an active ingredient in cosmetics products, as well as in soaps, fragrances and cleaning products for its antiseptic qualities and its light, citrusy and floral scent.
The oil of the mandarin fruit is rich in natural phytochemicals and bioactive compounds such as pinenes, terpenes, sesquiterpenes, camphene, linalool, geraniol, limonene and sabinene.
Pharmaceutical medicines and hair or skin treatment products typically include these chemical compounds.
They have immense healing, restorative and nourishing qualities. So finding them in their natural form is a great way to maximize their healing effects, reduce your chemical intake and even save money.

How is Mandarin Essential Oil Made?
Like most oils produced from citrus fruits, mandarin essential oil is extracted from the skin or rind of the fruit through a process known as steam distillation.
Steam distillation is one of the oldest methods of distillation. It involves gathering and pressing (or drying) the rinds of the fruit to help enable the evaporation process.
You then add the rinds to a large vat of boiling water. The mixture cooks/brews for 5-6 hours at very high temperatures.
During this time, the heat helps to break down the protective layer of the cells in the organic matter.
And the steam that results from the hot water extracts the phytochemicals, nutrients and minerals in the rind.

The steam then passes onto a separate cooling chamber.
As the steam gathers, it cools and condenses to form droplets that gather at the base of the chamber.
This then forms the liquid that we know as essential oil. We call it ‘essential’ because it shares the same ‘essence’ as the organic matter it came from.
Mandarin Oil is  a concentrated form of the various phytochemicals and bioactive compounds contained within the organic matter, and it’s therefore quite potent.

Citrus reticulata
The energy of mandarin oil is like a babbling brook, sparkling, gurgling, splashing, and giggling away without a care in the world.
Mandarin Oil's joyous character brings out the child in us and invites us to play.
That is probably why it is often described as a children's oil - quintessential happiness in a bottle.
In China, where it originated, it appears to have been in cultivation for thousands of years.
In the past it was so highly esteemed in China that Mandarins were reserved exclusively for the king's own pleasure.
Later they became a gift of honour to high ranking statesmen.
The Chinese still revere it, but by now ordinary folk are no longer prevented from enjoying them as well.
They regard Mandarins as 'golden apples', a symbol of good fortune and prosperity.
When the Chinese celebrate their New Year's Day, on the second new moon after the winter solstice, Mandarins are eaten so that their 'gold and good fortune' may infuse all those who partake of it.
Mandarin was the last of the citrus fruit to reach Europe. It wasn't until the early 19th century that it arrived on the tables of northern Europe.
Today Mandarin Oil ranks among the most popular citrus fruit and it is cultivated in many parts of the world.
