4-Methyl-2-pentanol (IUPAC name: 4-methylpentan-2-ol) or methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) is an organic chemical compound used primarily as a frother in mineral flotation. It is also used as a solvent, in organic synthesis, and in the manufacture of brake fluid and as a precursor to some plasticizers.
MIBC (Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol - 4-methyl-2-pentanol) is a colorless chemical compound primarily used in lube oil applications (as a chemical intermediate in manufacture of zinc dialkyldithiophosphate) and mining operations (as a flotation frother). It is also so used in smaller volumes as a coating solvent (in nitrocellulose and hot spray lacquers).
Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) are flammable, colorless, stable liquids that are largely consumed in solvent applications. MIBK is an excellent solvent for resins used in the production of surface coatings, as well as being widely used in rubber chemicals for the production of tires, as a solvent in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and adhesives, and for specialized metallurgical extraction. Solvent applications account for nearly half of total MIBK consumption. MIBC’s major application is in the manufacture of lube oil additives, followed by its use as the principal flotation frother in treating copper and other ores. Surface coatings make up a minor portion of MIBC consumption.

Uses 
In the lead-zinc around the world, fine grade copper ore and molybdenum sulfide ore and non-ferrous metallic mineral excellent foaming agent is mainly used for non-ferrous oxide ores or mud containing a large quantity of foaming agent during the separation. copper is widely used in gold processing, to improve the quality of concentrate particularly effective.
4-Methyl-2-pentanol has been used as an internal standard in the characterization of volatile fraction of monovarietal wines.
