MONOPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE

Monopotassium phosphate is produced by the action of phosphoric acid on potassium carbonate.
Monopotassium phosphate can then be crystallized into boules, large crystals by dissolving the KDP in hot water and salt, creating a growth solution, placing a seed crystal in the solution and then cooling the solution, done in a holden-type crystallizer, in what is known as solution growth.
Monopotassium phosphate—also known as potassium dihydrogen phosphate (chemical formula: KH₂PO₄)—is a water-soluble, crystalline salt that consists of one potassium ion (K⁺) and one dihydrogen phosphate ion (H₂PO₄⁻).

Monopotassium phosphate it is often used as a fertilizer, food additive, and buffering agent.
The salt often cocrystallizes with the dipotassium salt as well as with phosphoric acid.
Single crystals are paraelectric at room temperature.

At temperatures below −150 °C (−238 °F), they become ferroelectric.
Monopotassium phosphate can exist in several polymorphs.
At room temperature it forms paraelectric crystals with tetragonal symmetry.

Upon cooling to −150 °C (−238 °F) it transforms to a ferroelectric phase of orthorhombic symmetry, and the transition temperature shifts up to −50 °C (−58 °F) when hydrogen is replaced by deuterium.
Heating to 190 °C (374 °F) changes its structure to monoclinic.
When heated further, MKP decomposes, by loss of water, to potassium metaphosphate, KPO3, at 400 °C (752 °F).

Monopotassium phosphate is widely recognized for its dual role as a fertilizer and a buffering agent, and it is commonly used in agriculture, food processing, and laboratory applications due to its excellent solubility and stable pH characteristics.
Monopotassium phosphate appears as a white, odorless solid that easily dissolves in water to form a clear solution, and it typically has a neutral to slightly acidic pH, depending on concentration.
Its structure makes it an effective source of both potassium and phosphorus, two essential macronutrients required for plant growth, metabolic activity, and energy transfer, particularly in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate).

In agriculture, monopotassium phosphate is frequently used as a high-purity fertilizer, especially in hydroponics, fertigation systems, and foliar sprays, where it delivers nutrients quickly and efficiently without contributing excess nitrogen or harmful residues.
Its balanced composition supports root development, flowering, and fruit formation, while also improving the plant’s stress resistance under drought or disease pressure.

Monopotassium phosphate is a kind of highly efficient and rapid dissolving phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer containing, phosphorus and potassium, two elements for providing the necessary nutrients for plant growth and development, being applicable to any soil and crop, especially being applicable to the treatment of regions of simultaneous lack of phosphorus and potassium nutrients and phosphorus-preferred and potassium-preferred crops.
Monopotassium phosphate is mostly used for root top dressing, seed soaking, and seed dressing, being able to yield significant effect.

If it sued for the roots fertilization, it can be used as basal fertilizer, seed fertilizer or moderate-late phase topdressing.
Monopotassium phosphates aqueous solution can react with silver nitrate, generating yellow phosphorus dihydrogen phosphate precipitation, being able to be used as a differential reaction.
As potassium dihydrogen phosphate is expensive, there is less agricultural production.

Therefore, it is generally applied of the soaking or root top dressing for application.
For crop soaking, the commonly used concentration is 0.2%.
After dipping 18~20h, the field can be sown after drying. For root top dressing, if spraying alone, the highest concentration can be 0.5%.

If within the range of jointing-booting stage of wheat and rice, we can spray for 1 or 2 times during the cotton, rape early flowering phase.
Upon spraying 2 times, the interval can be about 7 to 10 days with the liquid usage amount per acre being about 100~150kg.
Monopotassium phosphate can also be combined with other nutrients to be formulated into compound nutrition for foliage top-dressing.

For example, the leaf fertilizer used for field crops in North China has its main ingredient be exactly potassium dihydrogen phosphate, urea and the addition inclusion of some trace elements.
In recent years, the use of blade complex nutrition also mostly adopts the potassium dihydrogen phosphate as a high concentration and excellent hydrophilic phosphate and potassium fertilizer source.
With the development of facilities of horticultural crops and drip irrigation, fertilizer irrigation, the increasing daily demand for potassium dihydrogen phosphate is also increasing.

Fertilizer-grade Monopotassium phosphate powder contains the equivalent of 52% P2O5 and 34% K2O, and is labeled NPK 0-52-34.
Monopotassium phosphate powder is often used as a nutrient source in the greenhouse trade and in hydroponics.
Crystals of Monopotassium phosphate are used in optical modulators and for non-linear optics such as second-harmonic generation (SHG).

Monopotassium phosphate, with slightly different properties, is also used in nonlinear frequency conversion of laser light.
The replacement of protons with deuterons in the crystal shifts the third overtone of the strong OH molecular stretch to longer wavelengths, moving it mostly out of the range of the fundamental line at approximately 1064 nm of neodymium-based lasers.
Regular Monopotassium phosphate has absorbances at this wavelength of approximately 4.7–6.3% per cm of thickness while highly deuterated KDP has absorbances of typically less than 0.8% per cm.

Monopotassium phosphate is also used as an ingredient in sports drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade.
In medicine, monopotassium phosphate is used for phosphate substitution in hypophosphatemia.
Monopotassium phosphate, MKP, (also potassium dihydrogenphosphate, KDP, or monobasic potassium phosphate) is the inorganic compound with the formula KH2PO4.

Together with dipotassium phosphate (K2HPO4.(H2O)x) it is often used as a fertilizer, food additive, and buering agent.
The salt often cocrystallizes with the dipotassium salt as well as with phosphoric acid.
Single crystals are paraelectric at room temperature.

At temperatures below −150 °C (−238 °F), they become ferroelectric.
Potassium salts are well absorbed from the GI tract.
Ingested phosphates are absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
However, the presence of large amounts of calcium or aluminum may lead to formation of insoluble phosphate and reduce the net absorption.

Monopotassium Phosphate is a potassium salt in which dihydrogen phosphate(1-) is the counterion.
Monopotassium Phosphate has a role as a fertilizer.
Monopotassium Phosphate is a potassium salt and an inorganic phosphate.

Monopotassium phosphate may be prepared by partial neutralization of phosphoric acid with potassium hydroxide in equimolar amounts:H3PO4+ KOH →KH2PO4+ H2O.
Monopotassium phosphate, MKP, (also potassium dihydrogenphosphate, KDP, or monobasic potassium phosphate), KH2PO4, is a soluble salt of potassium and the dihydrogen phosphate ion.
It is a source of phosphorus and potassium as well as a buffering agent.

Monopotassium Phosphate can be used in fertilizer mixtures to reduce escape of ammonia by keeping pH low.
Monopotassium Phosphate crystals are colorless, soluble in water and hygroscopic in nature.Upon heating through 187°C, phase transition occurs in KH2PO4, crystal system changes from tetragonal to monoclinic, lattice parameters at 195°C are α=7.47?, b =7.33?, c =14.49?, α=?=90° and γ=92.2.

Potassium phosphate monobasic also referred to as monopotassium phosphate or potassium dihydrogen phosphate is a soluble salt of potassium that serves as a buffering agent.
It enhances the solubility of calcium and phosphorus in amino acid plus dextrose solutions and hence assists in improving the mineral balance of parenterally fed low birth weight infants.
Potassium is the major cation of intracellular fluid and is essential for maintenance of acid-base balance, isotonicity, and electrodynamic characteristics of the cell.

Potassium is an important activator in many enzymatic reactions and is essential to a number of physiologic processes including transmission of nerve impulses; contraction of cardiac, smooth, and skeletal muscles; gastric secretion; renal function; tissue synthesis; and carbohydrate metabolism.
Monopotassium Phosphate is a major intracellular anion that participates in providing energy for metabolism of substrates and contributes to important metabolic and enzymatic reactions in almost all organs and tissues.
Monopotassium Phosphate exerts a modifying influence on calcium concentrations, a buffering effect on acid-base equilibrium, and has a major role in the renal excretion of hydrogen ions.

In the food industry, monopotassium phosphate serves as an acidity regulator, emulsifier, and stabilizer in a wide variety of processed foods and beverages.
It helps maintain a consistent pH, improves texture in dairy products, and can also act as a yeast nutrient in fermentation processes, particularly in baking and brewing.
Monopotassium phosphate is also used in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, where it functions as a buffering agent in cell culture media, diagnostic reagents, and intravenous fluids.

Its buffering capacity helps maintain a stable pH environment, which is critical for many biochemical reactions and laboratory procedures.
From a chemical standpoint, KH₂PO₄ is part of the phosphate salt family and is considered relatively non-toxic and environmentally friendly when used appropriately.
However, in high concentrations or in improperly managed runoff from agricultural fields, it can contribute to eutrophication in water bodies, which leads to algae blooms and aquatic ecosystem imbalance.

Dissolve it in boiling distilled water (2mL/g), keep on a boiling water-bath for several hours, then filter it through paper pulp to remove any turbidity.
Cool rapidly with constant stirring, and the crystals are collected on to hardened filter paper, using suction, washed twice with ice-cold water, once with 50% EtOH, and dried at 105o.
Alternative crystallisations are from water, then 50% EtOH, and again water, or from concentrated aqueous solution by addition of EtOH.

Monopotassium Phosphate is freed from traces of Cu by extracting its aqueous solution with diphenylthiocarbazone in CCl4, followed by repeated extraction with CCl4 to remove traces of diphenylthiocarbazone.
As a crystal, Monopotassium phosphate is noted for its non-linear optical properties.
Used in optical modulators and for non linear optics such as second-harmonic generation (SHG).

Also to be noted is Monopotassium phosphate, potassium dideuterium phosphate, with slightly dierent properties.
Highly deuterated Monopotassium Phosphate is used in nonlinear frequency conversion of laser light instead of protonated (regular) KDP due to the fact that the replacement of protons with deuterons in the crystal shifts the third overtone of the strong OH molecular stretch to longer wavelengths, moving it mostly out of the range of the fundamental line at approximately 1064 nm of neodymium-based lasers.
Monopotassium Phosphate has absorbances at this wavelength of approximately 4.7–6.3% per cm of thickness while highly deuterated KDP has absorbances of typically less than 0.8% per cm.

Monopotassium phosphate eliminate the odor, rash, and turbidity present with ammoniacal urine associated with urinary tract infections. However, use of phosphates for urea splitting urinary tract infections may predispose to struvite stones that form in alkaline urine.
Potassium and sodium phosphates combination and Monopotassium phosphate have been used to reduce urinary calcium concentration and help prevent precipitation of calcium deposits in the urinary tract.
At the renal distal tubule, the secretion of hydrogen by the tubular cell in exchange for sodium in the tubular urine converts dibasic phosphate salts to monobasic phosphate salts.

Therefore, large amounts of acid can be excreted without lowering the pH of the urine to a degree that would block hydrogen transport by a high concentration gradient between the tubular cell and luminal uid.
The eects of intravenous administration of potassium phosphate in the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis were studied in nine children, ages 9 9/12 to 17 10/12 yr.
During phosphate infusion (20--40 mEq/L of uid), all children maintained normal serum concentrations of phosphorus.

Transient hypocalcemia occurred in six and transient hypomagnesemia in ve patients.
One child developed carpopedal spasms refractory to intravenous infusion of calcium gluconate but responsive to intramuscular injection of magnesium sulfate.
In three patients, serum levels of intact parathyroid hormone were low at the time of hypocalcemia, an observation that suggests transient hypoparathyroidism.

This study indicates that the use of potassium phosphate as the sole source of potassium replacement might potentiate ketoacidosis-induced hypocalcemia through multiple mechanisms.
Monopotassium phosphate is the most highly concentrated in phosphorus soluble PK fertilizer.
Monopotassium Phosphate is used both in protected and open field for any phenological stages of plant development, also for foliar application.

Monopotassium phosphate is 100% soluble in water, quickly absorbed by plants, which allows to use it for root application through irrigation systems.
It is especially recommended to use in hydroponics, as it does not contain chlorine and any insolubles.
