EC/LIST NO.:149-64-4

N-butyl bromide, also known as n-butyl bromide is a primary alkyl halide, with the formula CH3CH2CH2CH2Br .
N-butyl bromide is colorless liquid, insoluble in water, but soluble in ethanol and ether; melting point -112 C; boiling point 101 - 102 C.
N-butyl bromide is used as an alkylating agent to introduce the butyl groups to form carbon-carbon bonds in organic synthesis.
They are also used as  intermediate to form alkylated amines and alkylated metallic compounds.
The end products include pharmaceuticals, insecticides, quaternary ammonium compounds, flavours and fragrances.
Some examples of C4 bromide compounds include

N-butyl bromide  appears as a clear colorless liquid.
Flash point 65°F.
Denser than water and insoluble in water.
Vapors heavier than air.

N-butyl bromide  is used as an intermediate in organic synthesis and as a solvent for cleaning and degreasing.
N-butyl bromide acts as an alkylating agent as well as to prepare organometallic compounds such as n-butyllithium.
N-butyl bromide is also involved in the synthesis of procaine and tetracaine.
N-butyl bromide reacts with magnesium metal to prepare the Grignard reagent, which is used to form carbon-carbon bonds.

N-butyl bromide is a widely used antispasmodic belonging to the belladonna alkaloid class of semisynthetic quaternary ammonium compounds.
These compounds exert a spasmolytic action on the smooth muscles of the bile-gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary tract, salivary glands (xerostomia), and also on the visual apparatus – in particular, the irido-ciliary complex.
As a consequence, they provoke collateral effects such as mydriasis and accommodation disturbances.
We report the case of a 23-year-old woman who complained of not only "dry mouth" but also "cloudy vision" and a "diplopia", both of temporary type, 2 hours after oral administration of hyoscine-N-butyl bromide.

Hyoscine N-butyl bromide, also known as scopolamine, is a type of antimuscarinic agent; this class of drugs also includes atropine, ipratropium, diphenhydramine, and others.
Attachment of the butyl-bromide moiety prevents the movement of this drug across the blood-brain barrier, thereby minimizing its potential neurologic side effects.
N-butyl bromide is often used as an antispasmodic treatment for the pain and discomfort induced by abdominal cramps or menstrual cramps.
Herein, we report a case of hypotension and acute myocardial infarction after intravenous hyoscine injection as premedication for colonoscopy.
In this case, it was difficult to discern the cause-effect relationship between myocardial infarction and hypotension.
