Octadodecanol is prepared from Stearic acid or some fats by the process of catalytic hydrogenation. 
Octadodecanol could be produced in a synthetic way also (Ziegler process).

PREPARATION METHOD OF OCTADODECANOL:
Octadodecanol can be prepared by hydrolysis of cetyl oil, by hydrogenation of stearic acid under catalysis of copper chromate, or by reduction of ethyl stearate with saturated ethanol. 
Heptadecene fraction can also be obtained by controlling the polymerization reaction of ethylene under the action of alkyl aluminum, and then the eighteen alcohol can be obtained by carbonyl synthesis.
