Chemical Identity and Properties:
ORGAL HT 465 is a HASE (Hydrophobically Modified Alkali-Swellable Emulsion) thickener. HASE polymers are acrylic-based copolymers containing hydrophobic groups that provide associative thickening properties. These materials are supplied as low-viscosity emulsions that, when neutralized to alkaline pH, swell and develop high viscosity through a combination of:
Alkali-swellable mechanism: Carboxylic acid groups (-COOH) are neutralized to carboxylate salts (-COO⁻), causing polymer chain expansion
Associative mechanism: Hydrophobic side chains interact with each other and with formulation components, forming temporary networks

Mechanism of Action:
HASE thickeners are activated by pH adjustment:
Initial state: At pH 2.1–4.1, the polymer is in a collapsed, low-viscosity emulsion form
Neutralization: When base (e.g., ammonia, sodium hydroxide, amines) is added to raise pH above approximately 7–8
Swelling: Carboxylic acid groups are neutralized, causing polymer chains to expand and dissolve
Associative network: Hydrophobic groups associate with each other and with formulation components, creating a three-dimensional network that increases viscosity
Final properties: Provides shear-thinning rheology (pseudoplastic) with excellent sag resistance and flow properties
Applications:
HASE thickeners like ORGAL HT 465 are used in water-based formulations where efficient thickening and rheology control are required:
