PCBTF (P-Chlorobenzotrifluoride) is a colourless liquid that boils at 139°C and the vapour has a characteristic aromatic odour.

Sold under the brand names of Oxsol 100 and SMC Spec 900, the great advantage of PCBTF (P-Chlorobenzotrifluoride) as a solvent is its capacity to dissolve large quantities of non- and low-polarity molecules.
The figure commonly cited is that 20 g of PCBTF will dissolve 22 g of printers’ ink.

Also, the solvent has a low surface tension, so ink, paint and varnish solutions will easily penetrate cracks and crevices.
The upside seems to be that very small proportions of the solvent are needed to dissolve the pigment or varnish formulation, therefore the levels of VOC as the solvent evaporates will be comparatively less.

PRODUCTION METHODS of PCBTF (P-CHLOROBENZOTRIFLUORIDE):
The preparation method of PCBTF (P-Chlorobenzotrifluoride) comprises the following steps:
Adding p-chlorotrichlorotoluene into a fluorination reactor, cooling the condenser with frozen salt water, pressing the liquid hydrogen fluoride measured by the liquid bottle from a steel bottle to a fluorination reactor, adding a catalyst, closing the regulating valve, and stirring.

In the heating reaction, the hydrogen fluoride produced by the reaction is accompanied by the volatilization of hydrogen fluoride and the organic matter to condense and reflux.

The liquid hydrogen fluoride condensed and recovered is stored in the recovery tank.
At the end of the reaction, the fluorinated product of PCBTF enters the distillation pot and is heated in a vacuum system to obtain a rectified product.

Chlorine is exchanged for fluorine with use of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride in the presence or absence of catalyst.
This reaction can be carried out as a batch process in autoclaves or continuously in a series of autoclaves or tubular reactors.

Typical conditions for the production of benzotrifluoride are a temperature of 80 - 110 °C, pressure of 1.2 - 1.4MPa, and a molar ratio of HF: benzotrichloride of 4:1.

A yield of 70% is obtained within 3 - 4 hr. In continuous processing, a yield of over 90%is obtained in a nickel flow tube with a residence time of 1 hr at 90 - 130 °C and at 3-5MPa.

Yields are increased by using additives such as hexamethylenetetramine or by employing chlorine - fluorine exchange in the gas phase in the presence of a transition metal - aluminum oxide catalyst.

Corrosion is reduced by lowering the reaction temperature (<60 °C) and adding iron or iron compounds.
This method is used to produce PCBTF (P-Chlorobenzotrifluoride).

The production methods of PCBTF (P-Chlorobenzotrifluoride) are liquid phase fluorination of chloromethyl benzene and catalytic method, which mainly uses the liquid phase fluorination of chloromethyl benzene, that is, the chlorine trichloromethyl benzene in the catalyst and pressure (can also be atmospheric pressure) fluorination was carried out at low temperature (<100 °c) with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride.

HISTORY of PCBTF (P-CHLOROBENZOTRIFLUORIDE):
PCBTF (P-Chlorobenzotrifluoride) has been commercially-produced since the 1960s, but initially only as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals.

It was in the 1990s that PCBTF (P-Chlorobenzotrifluoride) was first marketed as a solvent.
The producer at the time, Occidental Chemical, petitioned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for exemption from regulations pertaining to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on the grounds that PCBTF (P-Chlorobenzotrifluoride) did not contribute significantly to photochemical smog nor was it a significant greenhouse gas nor an ozone-depleting gas in the stratosphere.

In the troposphere, PCBTF (P-Chlorobenzotrifluoride) is transformed with an estimated half-life of 67 days by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals to give mainly 2-chloro-5-trifluoromethylphenol.

The EPA subsequently approved the request for VOC regulation exemption, though Occidental Chemical ceased manufacture, and China seems to be the major producer now.
