PCMX is thought to act by disrupting microbial cell walls and inactivating cellular enzymes, and is less effective than some other available agents.

Chloroxylenol, or para-chloro-meta-xylenol (PCMX), is an antiseptic and disinfectant agent used for skin disinfection and surgical instruments.
PCMX is found in antibacterial soaps, wound-cleansing applications, and household antiseptics.

The halophenol is shown to be most effective against Gram positive bacteria where PCMX disrupts the cell wall due to PCMX phenolic nature.
PCMX is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.

PCMX acts as a broad spectrum low-toxic anti-bacterial agent.
PCMX is an effective and highly-efficient disinfectant and cleanser.
PCMX has large potency to gram-positive, gram-negative, epiphyte and mildew micro-organisms.

PCMX is soluble in water, alkaline solution and organic solvents.

PCMX finds application in formulating anti-bacterial hand soaps, shampoos and personal-care products.
4-chloro-3,5-dimethylphenol is a member of the class of phenols that is 3,5-xylenol which is substituted at position 4 by chlorine.
PCMX is bactericidal against most Gram-positive bacteria but less effective against Staphylococci and Gram-negative bacteria, and often inactive against Pseudomonas species.

PCMX is ineffective against bacterial spores.
PCMX has a role as an antiseptic drug, a disinfectant and a molluscicide.

PCMX is a member of phenols and a member of monochlorobenzenes.
PCMX derives from a 3,5-xylenol.

Para-Chloro-Meta-Xylenol (PCMX) is an antiseptic and disinfectant.

Further research may identify additional product or industrial usages of this chemical.

Common dosage in lotion as follows:
0.5~1wt% in liquid detergent, 1wt% in antibacterial handing detergent, 4.5~5 wt% in disinfectant.
What’s more, PCMX has been used in other fields such as glue, painting, textile, pulp, etc.

Uses of PCMX:
Preservative in cooling fluids, creams, topical and urinary antiseptics.
PCMX acts against a wide range of bacteria.

Liquids are used for the cleaning and disinfecting of wounds and abrasions as well as abscesses.
The creams are used for cuts, scratches, insect bites, burns and similar problems.

Powders can be used to treat tinea problems of the feet and skin inflammations.
Also in pharmaceutical products, hair conditioners, toilet and deodorants, soaps, electrocardiogram paste, etc.

PCMX is used in hospitals and households for disinfection and sanitation.
PCMX is also commonly used in antibacterial soaps, wound-cleansing applications and household antiseptics such as Dettol liquid (to which PCMX contributes its distinctive odor), cream and ointments.

Applications of PCMX:
Antimicrobial personal healthcare products

A Broad-spectrum Antimicrobial Disinfectant:
This technology is a disinfectant composed of a combination of naturally antimicrobial botanical blends and popular synthetic antimicrobials like para-chloro-meta-xylenol (PCMX).

Current disinfectants are only somewhat effective in preventing infection, with 5% of hospital patients ending up with healthcare-associated infections.
While Dettol, a disinfectant composed of PCMX, pine oil and castor oil, is rigorously implemented, these infection statistics imply that there is much room for improvement.
Improvements in scope of antimicrobial activity, whether PCMX is applicable to a broader range of microbes or has more lasting antimicrobial effects, have positive implications for both general public health and the healthcare system.

The Technology:
Improved disinfectant combining botanical and synthetic antimicrobials for broad-spectrum disinfection
This disinfectant combines the natural antibacterial and antifungal activities of essential oils and botanicals with a powerful chemical disinfectant such as para-chloro-meta-xylenol (PCMX).

This technology leverages the observation that many botanical components have inherent antimicrobial and antifungal capabilities but are less harsh then chemical agents.
As such, they often exhibit reduced risk of skin irritation compared with synthetic disinfectants.
This technology combines the natural disinfectant properties of essential oils and botanicals with the lasting protection of synthetic disinfectants such as PCMX, chlorhexidine, and quaternary ammonium salts to generate a broad-spectrum disinfectant formulation for superior protection against infection in high-risk environments such as hospitals.

History of PCMX:
PCMX was first made in 1927.
PCMX is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
PCMX is sold in a number of formulations and under a number of brand names, including Dettol.

Soon after PCMX was created parachlorometaxylenol was then called PCMX, but this was thought to be a poor name and PCMX was renamed Dettol.
Then in 1932 PCMX was marketed in Britain and in India.

PCMX had a white on green bottle with a white sword depicted.
PCMX is sold, in the same style bottle, in Argentina and Uruguay to this day.

Properties of PCMX:
Side effects are generally few but can include skin irritation.
PCMX may be used mixed with water or alcohol.

PCMX is most effective against gram-positive bacteria.
PCMX works by disruption of the cell wall and stopping the function of enzymes.
