The names "pegFlakes", "Restoralax" or "Lax-A-Day" are sometimes used to refer to PEG 3350. PEG 3350 comes in powder form.

Before giving the medicine
Before giving this medicine to your child:
Tell your doctor if your child is allergic to polyethylene glycol.

Talk with the doctor or pharmacist if your child has any of the following conditions. It may be necessary to take precautions with this medicine if your child has any of the following conditions:
Slow movement in the intestines or blockage of the gastrointestinal tract
Kidney disease
How to give the medicine
How to give this medicine to your child
Use the following guidelines to administer PEG 3350 to your child:

Give PEG 3350 to your child for as long as your doctor or pharmacist tells you to.
Give your child PEG 3350 at the same time every day, just as your doctor or pharmacist has told you to do. Choose a time when it is easy for you to give this medicine to your child to avoid missing doses.
Measure the dose using the special spoon or measuring cup provided in the container. A dose of 17 grams corresponds to a tablespoon filled with powder. One tablespoon is equal to three teaspoons.
Mix the dose of PEG 3350 powder with 120 ml to 240 ml of the appropriate liquid (water, juice or soft drink). Mix well. The powder will dissolve. Your child should drink this whole mixture immediately.
What if you miss a dose
What to do if your child misses a dose?
Give it the missed dose as soon as you think about it.
If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Give her the next dose at the regular time.
Do not give your child 2 doses to make up for the missed dose.

Possible side effects
What are the possible side effects of this medicine?
Your child may experience side effects from PEG 3350. Talk to your child's doctor if your child has any of the following side effects and these do not go away or are bothersome for your child:

bloating
nausea
Call the doctor during office hours if your child:

has a lot of diarrhea (loose, watery stools)
displays signs of dehydration, such as: weakness, confusion, dry mouth, no tears when crying, urinating less often

Contact your doctor if your child is still constipated one week after starting PEG 3350.

Make sure your child's diet includes plenty of fluid and fiber. Foods high in fiber include fruits and vegetables, whole grain cereals, bran, and beans.

Do not share your child's medicine with other people. Never give your child another person's medicine.

Carefully follow the directions on your prescription label and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any parts that you do not understand. Take Polyethylene Glycol 3350 (PEG 3350) exactly as directed.

Polyethylene glycol 3350 (PEG 3350) can be habit-forming. Do not take a larger dose, take it more often, or take it for longer than your doctor has prescribed.

Polyethylene glycol 3350 (PEG 3350) can take 2 to 4 days to produce a stool.

To use the powder, follow these steps:
If you are using polyethylene glycol 3350 (PEG 3350) from a bottle, use the measurement line on the bottle cap to measure a single dose (approximately 1 full tablespoon). If you are using polyethylene glycol 3350 sachets, each sachet contains a single dose.
Pour the powder into a cup containing 8 ounces (240 milliliters) of water, juice, soda, coffee or tea.
Stir to dissolve the powder.
Drink immediately.

What special precautions should I take?
Before taking polyethylene glycol 3350 (Peg 3350),

How should this medication be used?
The recommended dose is 17 g (1 sachet or a full tablespoon) of PEG 3350 once a day. The powder should be added to 250 mL (1 cup) of water, juice, soft drink, coffee or tea and stir until the contents are dissolved. Drink the solution immediately after preparing it.

This medicine may take 2 to 4 days to work. Do not use this product for more than 7 days unless your doctor recommends it.

There are several factors that can be taken into account in determining the dose a person needs: their weight, their health and whether they are taking other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose other than those listed here, do not change the way you are taking the medicine without consulting your doctor.

It is important to use PEG 3350 exactly as your doctor has told you.

The PEG 3350 should not be used in the following circumstances:

is allergic to PEG 3350 or to any of the ingredients of the medication
intestinal obstruction.
What are the possible side effects of this medicine?

Many medications can cause side effects. A side effect is an unwanted response to a drug when taken in normal doses. It can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent. The side effects listed below are not experienced by everyone who takes this medicine. If you are concerned about side effects, discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor.

At least 1% of people taking this medicine reported the following side effects. Many of these side effects can be managed and a few may go away on their own over time.

Consult your doctor if you experience these side effects and if they are serious or bothersome. Your pharmacist may be able to give you advice on what to do if these side effects appear:

abdominal cramps or bloating;
diarrhea;
excessive frequency of bowel movements;
flatulence (gas);
nausea.
Stop taking the drug and seek immediate medical attention if there is a response such as:

symptoms of a serious allergic reaction (eg hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the mouth, tongue, face or throat).

Are there other precautions or warnings?

Cramping, Bloating, or Diarrhea: If you experience cramps, diarrhea, or unusual bloating, contact your doctor.

Fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or bloating: If you experience any of these symptoms, do not take this medicine until you have talked to your doctor.

Long-term use: This medicine should not be taken daily for more than a week unless a healthcare practitioner tells you to.

Overdose: Do not take more PEG 3350 than the recommended dose, as this can cause severe diarrhea and dehydration.

Pregnancy: This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. If pregnancy happens while you are using this medicine, contact your doctor immediately.

Breast-feeding: It is not known whether PEG 3350 passes into breast milk. If you take this medicine while you are breast-feeding your baby may feel the effects. Check with your doctor to see if you should continue breast-feeding.

Children: The safety and effectiveness of this medicine has not been established in children. Do not give this medicine to children under 18 years old.

Seniors: If you have diarrhea, stop taking this medication and contact your doctor.

Can other agents interact with this medication?
Do not take other medicines for 2 hours after or before taking PEG 3350. PEG 3350 may reduce the effectiveness of other medicines.

If you are taking any of these medicines, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. In your case, your doctor may ask you to:

stop taking any of the medicines,
replace one of the drugs with another,
change the way you take one or both of the medicines
don't change anything at all.
