Synonyms: tetrachlorethylene, PCE, 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethene, PERC.

Release form and appearance: colorless liquid with a pungent odor.

Production
Obtained by chlorination of 1,2-dichloroethane or oxidative chlorination of ethylene. The process is catalyzed by copper chloride, calcium chloride. Trichlorethylene is a by-product of the process. The products are separated by distillation.

Main Areas and Applications
The main application of PCE is a dry cleaning solvent. It is also used as a metal degreaser, a component of paint removal products, and a solvent in flexo printing processes. High purity PCE is used for catalyst regeneration in the oil refining industry.
