PHOSPHONOBUTANETRICARBOXYLIC ACID

PHOSPHONOBUTANETRICARBOXYLIC ACID = PBTC

CAS Number: 37971-36-1
European Community (EC) Number: 253-733-5
Molecular Formula: C7H11O9P
IUPAC Name: 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid

DESCRIPTION:
PBTC is a low phosphorus chemical containing organophosphonate, which is known to be a highly effective threshold scale inhibitor.
In other words, at very low (ppm level) levels, sub-stoichiometric concentrations calculated on hardness of water, PBTC acts as excellent scale inhibitor for carbonates, sulfates and phosphates.

PBTC has good chelating ability for heavy metals.
PBTC is a weaker complexing agent for metals than EDTA. Hence, it eliminates the remobilization of heavy metals from sediments.
PBTC also has excellent tolerance towards chlorine and hypo-chlorites in the presence of bromine where most of the other phosphonates degrade extremely fast.
PBTC’s excellent thermal stability at various pH ranges, enables it to remain effective even at high pH levels and temperatures.
Additionally, PBTC has the dispersion property.
PBTC’s anions get adsorbed by inorganic particles in the water giving it the dispersion ability.
Lastly, PBTC is a good corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel.
Hence, PBTC is part of all organic water treatment programs.

Applications of PBTC:
•    Industrial cooling water treatment.
•    Industrial and institutional cleaners (I & I formulations)
•    Disinfectants
•    Liquid dishwashing and detergents
•    Metal surface treatment
•    Sequestering agent in textile auxiliaries
•    Hypochlorite stabilization

Phosphonates derived from phosphorous (phosphonic) acid are employed in the applications of scale Inhibition, sequestration, dispersion and corrosion inhibition in addition to the main applications of agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides, and soil conditioners.
Phosphonates offer a wide range of sequestrants to control metal ions in aqueous systems.
By forming stable water soluble complexes with multivalent metal ions, phosphonates prevent undesired interaction by blocking normal reactivity of metal ions.
This ability contributes to function as threshold industrial water treatment and metal treatment processes (antiscalants, corrosion inhibitors, chelants, sludge conditioners, pulp bleachings, deflocculants, dispersants, metal cleaners, electroplating and crystal growth modifiers). Phosphonates are also used in manufacturing detergents, cosmetics and personal care products for special functions such as low levels iron control, stain removal, bleach stabilization, peroxide stabilization and anti-encrustation.
Phosphonates existing in various compounds as acids or salts are marketed in the form of concentrated solutions.
PBTC has three carboxy groups in one molecule.
This multifunctional carboxylic acid provides covalently linked structure with hydroxy group. Carboxylic acids form amide derivatives.
PBTC is a raw material to produce aromatic polyimide resins having high resistance to thermal stresses.
PBTC is a metal chelator.
PBTC is used as a corrosion inhibitor and a metal-cleaning composition.
PBTC is used as a chemical intermediate.
Its derivatives, acyl halides, anhydrides, esters, amides and nitriles, are used in making target products such as flavoring agents, pesticides, cosmetic ingredients, dyes, textile treatment agents, fungicides, and pharmaceuticals through further reactions of substitution, catalytic reduction, metal hydride reduction, diborane reduction, keto formation with organometallic reagents, electrophile bonding at oxygen, and Claisen condensation on carboxylic group.
