History of Pine Oil Usage
The Pine tree is easily recognized as the “Christmas Tree,” but Pine oil is also commonly cultivated for its wood, which is rich in resin and is thus ideal for use as fuel, as well as for making a pitch, tar, and turpentine, substances that are traditionally used in construction and painting.

In folk tales, the height of the Pine tree has led to its symbolic reputation as a tree that loves the sunlight and is always growing taller in order to catch the beams. 
This is a belief that is shared throughout many cultures, which also refer to Pine oil as “The Master of Light” and “The Torch Tree.” Accordingly, in the region of Corsica, Pine oil is burned as a spiritual offering so that Pine oil can emit a source of light.

Commercial production
Commercial production of pine oil involves extracting essential oil from pine trees, typically from needles, stumps, or sap, using steam distillation, the most common and environmentally friendly method. 
In this process, raw pine material is placed in a still where high-temperature steam vaporises volatile compounds, which are then condensed and separated from water to yield pine oil. 
Alternative methods like solvent extraction and microwave-assisted extraction are also used for specialised applications.

Reactivity Profile
PINE OIL has a high content of various alcohols. 
Flammable and/or toxic gases are generated by the combination of alcohols with alkali metals, nitrides, and strong reducing agents. 
They react with oxoacids and carboxylic acids to form esters plus water. 
Oxidizing agents convert them to aldehydes or ketones. Alcohols exhibit both weak acid and weak base behavior. 
They may initiate the polymerization of isocyanates and epoxides.

Chemical Properties
Pine-needle oil is produced primarily in Eastern (Hungary) and Southeastern (Bulgaria) Europe by steam distillation of the needles of the Norwegian or Scotch pine, Pinus sylvestris L. var. sylvestris or Pinus nigra Arnold ssp. nigra. 
Pine oil is a colorless or yellowish liquid with an aromatic, turpentine-like odor. 
In China, pine-needle oil is also obtained from Pinus massoniana Lamb.

Chemical Properties
Scotch pine tree grows to 20 to 25 m (66 to 82 ft) in height. 
Pine oil has a reddish-brown bark (rough or cracked) that detaches readily; long, blue-green needles (twined) forming a terminal cluster; and flowers from April to May. 
The staminiferous flowers are clustered at the branch tips, while the pistiliferous flowers are singular and reddish-purple in color, and they later yield scaly cones. 
The tree is widespread throughout Europe, Asia and North America. 
The parts used are the needles and twigs. 
Scotch Pine has a strong pine–turpentine odor.

Essential oil composition
Main constituents include α- and β-pinene, d- and l-limonene, aldehydes, dl-borneol, alcohols, terpene alcohols, bornyl acetate, phenols and fatty acids.

Composition
The barks were analyzed to biomonitor the pollution by estimating the following inorganic and organic substances: Al, As, B, Ca, Cd, Ce, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mo, NH4 +, Ni, NO3 -, PO4(3)-, Pb, Sr, SO4(2)-, Ti, V, W, Zr, Zn, benzo[a]pyrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, α-hexachlorocyclohexane (α-HCH) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT).* The German oil contains dextro-pinene, d-sylvestrene, cadinene, and probably bornyl- or terpinyl-acetate (about 3.5%).

Toxicity evaluation
Both the acute oral LD50 value in rats and the acute dermal LD50 value in rabbits exceeded 5 g/kg (Levenstein, 1975). 
The acute oral LD50 for rats was determined by von Skramlik (1959) as 6.88 g/kg body weight, calculated to correspond to approximately 482g/70kg body weight in man.

Packaging & Storage: 
Packed in 44/53/58 gallons new galvanized or coated steel drums, 150/180/195kgs net per drum. 
Goods can also be packed in 1000L IBCs, ISOTanks or other containers according to customers' requirements. 
Containers should be stored in a cool, ventilated warehouse, away from fire, heat and incompatible chemicals.

Safety
With respect to the quality of indoor air, attention is directed to the effects of ambient ozone on pine oil components.
Large doses may cause central nervous system depression.

Safety & Precautions
Do not swallow: Ingesting pine oil is toxic and can cause severe lung inflammation if Pine oil enters the airways.
Skin irritation: Pine oil can trigger allergic reactions, redness, or dryness in people with sensitive skin. 
Always dilute Pine oil with a carrier oil before applying it to the skin.
Keep away from pets: Pine oil can be highly toxic to cats and dogs.
