POLYAMINOPROPYL BIGUANIDE

A hydrochloride salt of Polyaminopropyl Biguanide.
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is a broad spectrum and fast acting bactericide which is used for the formulation of disinfectants and sanitisers.
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide proved toxic to keratocytes and was shown to have acute toxic effects in human cells where it caused severe inflammation, atherogenesis, and aging.

Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is a polymer containing biguanide group connected with a three methylene (propyl) linker.
The polymer is a propyl analogue of Polyaminopropyl Biguanide.
The polymer display some antibacterial activity however much lower than PHMB.
As of May 2024, Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is not approved as a biocidal active substance under EU regulations.
In some sources, particularly in lists of cosmetic ingredients (INCI), the name Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is wrongly associated with polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB)
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is an aqueous-based cationic preservative, active against spoilage bacteria and is compatible with a wide range of aqueous based cosmetics and personal care formulations.

Its gentle nature makes Polyaminopropyl Biguanide ideal for both rinse-off and leave-on applications like shampoo (with cationic, nonionic or amphoteric surfactants), hair care products, skin creams, skin lotions, baby products, and wet wipes.
When mildness is an important feature for your product, Polyaminopropyl Biguanide's gentle and protective nature could make it your solution.
Polyaminopropyl biguamide or PHMB is a preservative used in liquid cosmetics.
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide's gentle nature makes it ideal for non-rinsing products such as hair care products, skin creams, skin lotions, baby products and wet wipes.
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide, also known as PAPB or PHMB (Polyhexamethyl biguanide) is a synthetic polymer.
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is made up of propyl biguanide units.
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide comes as a solid powder/ liquid (20% aqueous solution).
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide, a propyl analogue of polyhexamethylene biguanide, is a broad spectrum, fast acting bactericide with antibacterial activity.
Polyaminopropyl biguanide can be used as a preservative in cosmetic products.

Uses
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is an antiseptic with antiviral and antibacterial properties used in several ways including wound care dressings, contact lens cleaning solutions, perioperative cleansing products, and swimming pool cleaners.
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is a disinfectant that belongs to the group of polymyxins.
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including microorganisms resistant to other antibiotics.
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide has been shown to be effective against amoebae, such as Entamoeba histolytica, by penetrating the cytoplasmic membrane and disrupting protein synthesis.
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is also active against chitinase-producing organisms and can be used in disinfecting solutions.

Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is a biguanide antimicrobial agent that may cross-react with chlorhexidine and has been known to cause IgE-mediated reactions from toilet paper and wet wipes.
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is also used as an ingredient in eye drops for treatment purposes.
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is used as a preservative in cosmetics, personal care products, fabric softeners, contact lens solutions, hand washes, and more.
In cosmetics, the preservation of fruit and vegetables.
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is also used to preserve wet wipes; to control odor in textiles; to prevent microbial contamination in wound irrigation and sterile dressings; to disinfect medical/dental utensil and trays, farm equipment, animal drinking water, and hard surfaces for food handling institutions and hospitals; and to deodorize vacuums and toilets.

Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is used as a preservative in both rinse-off and leave-on cosmetic products.
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is beneficial in two ways: first, it cleans and sterilizes the skin, by rendering the harmful microorganisms of the skin ineffective.
Secondly, Polyaminopropyl Biguanide helps preserve a product throughout the shelf life and usage.
The presence of water and other organic substances like natural extracts in a cosmetic product, increased humidity in the environment may make a product prone to microbial growth.
Plus, once Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is opened and is in use there are higher chances of contamination by a microorganism.
When such a contaminated product is used on the skin/ hair and if the skin is not intact, the product may become dangerous to use as Polyaminopropyl Biguanide can lead to infection to the skin where it is used.
Polyaminopropyl biguanide protects the product from deterioration caused by microbial growth by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms.
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide is used in formulations of hair care products, bath and cleansing products, skin, and makeup products.
