SYNTHESIS OF POLYETHOXYLATED TALLOW AMINE:
Animal fat is hydrolyzed to give a mixture of free fatty acids, typically oleic (37–43%), palmitic (24–32%), stearic (20–25%), myristic (3–6%), and linoleic (2–3%).
These are then converted to fatty amines via the nitrile process before being ethoxylated with ethylene oxide; this makes them water-soluble and amphiphilic.
The length of the fatty tail and degree of ethoxylation will determine the overall properties of the surfactant.

The method described for comprehensive quantitative analysis of 66 polyethoxylated tallow amine (POE-tallowamine) homologs in citrus involves ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPLC) with electrospray mass spectrometry detection.

Efficient separation, reduced band broadening, and high sensitivity were achieved by employing an acetonitrile-aqueous solution containing a 10 mM ammonium formate gradient on a hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) column with a modified QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) method.

The method was successfully applied to determine polyethoxylated tallow amine in citrus samples from typical Chinese regions in 2021.
