Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is an amorphous polymer and is widely used among acrylic plastics. The use of the final product determines the type of polymerisation to obtain PMMA.
Bulk polymerization for the production of PMMA molded products such as sheets and rods.
Solution polymerization is more suitable for adhesives.
Emulsion polymerization for the production of polymer powders - by pressing and injection molding.
Slurry polymerisation, a high molecular weight PMMA polymer is used to make molded products by extrusion.

Properties The

defining properties of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) are: transparency in visible light is 92%, the ability to withstand environmental influences with minimal moisture absorption (<0.3%). Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) has good surface hardness (significantly higher than polycarbonate), scratch resistant, chemically resistant, but less resistant to a number of solvents.
To improve the mechanical properties of products made of polymethyl methacrylate, the latter are thermostated (annealed) to relieve internal stresses.

Application

The main application of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is lighting technology in the automotive industry, LED technology, lenses, optics, advertising, sanitary ware, monolithic sheets.
