Potassium formate is a product series of environmental friendly drilling fluid with high anti-pollution, high anti-temperature, high anti-pressure, these products are mainly used in in oilfield development (applied as oil field drilling fluid, well repairing fluid and well completion fluid), carbon black surface modification agent, snow-dissolved agent, mining, leather, printing and dyeing, electroplating and other industries.

Potassium formate is the potassium salt of formic acid, and is highly soluble in water. Potassium formate has various industrial applications, including de-icing, a heat transfer fluid, fertilizers, and others.
Electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) has been extensively and intensively investigated in the last decades, to generate chemicals, including formate.
Army considers the electrochemical approaches can enable systems that utilize inexpensive and readily available materials and would economically produce potassium formate in a form readily usable for roadway and runway deicing.
In this project, we propose a gas-diffusion layer (GDL)-based dual flow CO2 electrolyzer for potassium formate production using non-precious, highly formate-selective CO2RR catalysts based on HER-inert catalyst to hydrogenate CO2 but suppress hydrogen and CO production.

Recently potassium formate is engaged in its liquid form in reconstruction and drilling of boreholes.
Studies conducted by a number of Western companies and leading universities in the field of extractive industries show that solutions based on organic salts of alkali metals (such as potassium formate) are ideal for the most difficult tasks of reconstruction and drilling  of wells, their use helps to increase productivity and boost the recovery.

The characteristics of drilling solutions based on potassium formate:

High thermal stability — the muds based on formates preserve thermal stability at temperatures up to 200 °C.
Wide density control range, both with and without filling.
Wider range of viscosity control without the use of the solid phase.
The low level of corrosion — alkaline characteristics of the potassium formate solution provides good protection against corrosion.
Low solution crystallization temperature.
Prevention of shale swelling.
Rock stabilization due to the ion exchange effect.
Rock throughput capacity preservation.
The absence of toxic characteristics and environmental safety.
The advantages of potassium formate based solution usage:

No requirement toughening  from the environmental organizations.
Environmentally hazardous waste is not produced, which is extremely important in areas with high levels of environmental protection.
Possibility of multiple application and usage of drilling mud due to the high enzymatic stability of potassium formate and resistance to thermo-oxidative degradation.
Preparation and purification of the mud during the drilling process does not require additional equipment.

Refrigerants based on organic salts are a relatively new class of industrial antifreezes.

The most promising representative of such organic salts is potassium formate.

Aqueous solutions of potassium formate have a large number of advantages:

low viscosity;
high thermal conductivity;
non-toxic;
biodegradability.

As a result of this set of characteristics, potassium formate-based coolants have become an excellent solution for systems with operating temperatures below -30°C, where glycol-based coolants can no longer circulate or are still pumped, but with great difficulty.

Properties and uses of potassium formate
Freezium is a secondary circuit coolant developed by one of Europe's leading chemical companies specifically for use in modern indirect cooling systems.

Freezium based on potassium formate solution has all the properties of an ideal secondary refrigerant: low viscosity, good thermal conductivity and high specific heat.

When working with Freezium fluid, certain restrictions must be observed regarding temperature conditions and materials used.
A more detailed description can be found on the Freezium page.

Freezium's price corresponds to its high thermophysical properties.
However, this pays off in full in reducing plant energy costs due to the efficiency of the Freezium fluid in the circuit.

Non-toxic, non-flammable, and about 10 times more biodegradable than glycols,

Freezium does not require any special environmental precautions.

Freezium and potassium formate solutions are classified as non-hazardous cargo for transport.

Potassium Formate is an intermediate in the formate potash process for the production of potassium. It has also been studied as a potential environmentally-friendly deicing salt for use on roads.

(1) high potassium content
(2) The solubility is large;
(3) It is easy to absorb and safe.
Potassium formate has great solubility and is the best choice for producing high-potassium high-concentration drip irrigation liquid fertilizer,which can completely absorb no residue and increase the absorption efficiency of other fertilizers (mainly nitrogen fertilizer).

1. Potassium formate foliar fertilizer, with very high solubility (ten times or even dozens of times other potassium fertilizers), very low content of harmful substances chloride ion, can be widely used in Cotton, tobacco, flax, rice, wheat, corn, sugar cane and other crops and fruits and vegetables such as oranges and grapes.
2. Potassium formate foliar fertilizer is dissolved into a liquid by solids, and when diluted with liquid, try to use deionized water or distilled water.
3. When it is necessary to spray nitrogen fertilizer together, an appropriate proportion of urea can be added.
