POTASSIUM LAURETH-4 CARBOXYLATE

POTASSIUM LAURETH-4 CARBOXYLATE = AKYPO FOAM LM 25

Potassium laureth-4 carboxylate is an anionic surfactant that offers all the properties required for ultra-mild cleansing products.
Potassium Laureth-4 Carboxylate was developed with the aim of obtaining a special texture.

Chemical family: Polyoxyethylene alkylether carboxylates
Colourless to pale yellowish flowable paste
Potassium laureth-4 carboxylate is a crypto-anionic surfactant and was developed with the aim of obtaining a special texture.

Potassium laureth-4 carboxylate has been designed to achieve luxurious foam, with a very small bubble size and high foam consistency.
Despite being an anionic surfactant, Potassium laureth-4 carboxylate is mild to the skin and eyes.

When used as a secondary surfactant, Potassium laureth-4 carboxylate reduces irritation and improves the foam quality of the formulation.
Easy to thicken surfactant and specially designed for sulfate-free formulations.

Potassium laureth-4 carboxylate is a sulfate-free mild surfactant that produces a micro bubble size for soft and creamy foam textures.
Potassium laureth-4 carboxylate is one of the lowest irritant surfactants amongst anionic surfactants.

Potassium laureth-4 carboxylate is suitable for natural or sulfate free shampoos and is highly tolerant to hard water.
Potassium laureth-4 carboxylate is a form of lauryl alcohol (a non-sensitizing fatty alcohol derived from coconut oil) that can function as a cleansing agent, emulsifier/stabilizer, and formulary texture enhancer.

The number 4 correlates with the viscosity of Potassium laureth-4 carboxylate.
The higher the laureth’s numerical value, the greater the viscosity, eventually leading to white, waxy solids.

Potassium laureth-4 carboxylate is described as a clear, colorless liquid.
Potassium laureth-4 carboxylate can be plant-derived or made synthetically, with both forms producing equivalent results.

The Akypo products are Ether Carboxylic Acids (EC) or their salts.
The products included in the AKYPO range differ from each other in the degree of ethoxylation and in the alkyl chain length.
The Akypo products can be categorised according to the counterion (M+) into either acid form or neutralized sodium salt.

The ability of Akypo to enhance coacervate formation offers fine-control deposition of cationic polymers, hydrophobic materials and other active ingredients, improving some important properties such as soft feel, manageability, and conditioning, without forgoing other attributes.

The capacity of AKYPO to promote coacervate formation allows optimum polymer performance with the best cost/effectiveness ratio.
Akypo forms a water soluble ring complex with a cation which can be easily exchanged by other inorganic as well organic cations.

The carboxyl group enables Alkyl Ether Carboxylic acids to perform a double function as non-ionic  and anionic surfactant.
The Akypo products offer a wide range of secondary surfactants with excellent tolerance against hard water.
Depending on the carbon chain length and the ethoxylation degree the products show characteristic application properties.

The Akypo products are alkyl Ether Carboxylic Acids (ECAs) or their salts, with variable alkyl chain length (R) and various degrees of ethoxylation (n).
In terms of alkyl chain length, the Akypo products can be divided into two main categories, the Akypo LF and Akypo RLM ranges, each with its characteristic application properties.

The variable ethoxylation degree also affects these properties. Akypo LF types, whose alkyl chain length ranges from C4to C8, are low foaming surfactants with high dispersing and hydrotropic abilities.
Akypo range of products are ether carboxylic acids which are used as emulsifiers and stabilizers in metalworking fluids.

The alkyl chain length and degree of ethoxylation are varied, providing a range of materials to select from for specific applications and formulations.
These structures result in a variety of properties, offering many possibilities to the formulator.

There are two general types of ether carboxylates in the Akypo range: short and long alkyl chain length based.
The long chain type are based on C12 to C18 acids, while the short chain materials are based on C4 to C10 acids.

The long alkyl chain length Akypo materials are effective co-emulsifiers while offering immediate hard water stability improvement of emulsions.
The long alkyl chain length Akypo materials are used in much the same way as other co-emulsifiers, including fatty acids and nonionics, are used in metalworking fluids, but with additional benefits.
The long alkyl chain length Akypo materials are lime soap dispersing agents which allow calcium soaps to maintain their anti-foaming characteristics.

-Akypo are a good choice in the preparation of sulfate-free products, because Akypo offer an excellent balance between foam and mildness properties.
In shampoos, Akypo protects the color of dyed hair, reducing color fading that occurs during the washing process.

-Akypo , despite of being anionic surfactants, are very mild products and permit to improve the mildness of Personal Care cleansers.
-Akypo are able to reduce the irritation level of more aggressive surfactants, such as Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES).
-Akypo can be used as the main surfactant combined with amphoteric and non-ionic surfactants to replace Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) without forgoing other important properties such as foam.

-Hair color protection:
Colored hair needs special care to prevent the effects of solar exposure and other external factors in color fading.
Akypo range offers an excellent performance in preventing color loss in dyed hair, when compared to other anionic surfactants.
Due to their chemical structure, Akypo products enhance coacervates formation, thus allowing higher deposition of polymers and other hydrophobic components such as silicones or oils.

-Hair:
Formulations with Akypo offer truly noticeable benefits for consumers.
In a basic shampoo formula (SLES/CAPB), the addition of AKYPO has a boosting effect on the performance of the polymers, included as conditioning agents.

-Combability:
When using Akypo, the polymer percentage can be reduced, while maintaining the performance and smoothing effect.
Thus, additionally allows an optimization of the final cost of the formulation.

-Polymer deposition:
Formulations with Akypo, deposit significantly more polymer onto the hair surface, than if only SLES is used as anionic surfactant.

This effect is more relevant when silicone is included.
However, despite higher polymer deposition, no build-up occurs after several applications and there is no negative effect on hair volume.

-Body:
Akypo products show a very good compatibility with oils.
In body cleansers with high oil content, the Akypo range provides creamy foam and a soft skin feel.

Akypo products also improve rinse out.
Obtained results are comparable or better than benchmark products.

-Surfactants from the Akypo range have been used in Personal Care products for many years because of their mildness to skin and eyes, good ecotoxicity properties, and excellent compatibility with all kinds of surfactants – including cationic- type surfactants and specific additives such as cationic polymers in shampoos and bath gels.

STABILITY of  AKYPO PRODUCTS:
-Hard Water:
Tap water contains calcium and magnesiumions.
The stability of a cleaning formulation and its performance are highly dependent on water hardness.

According to DIN 53905 (Hard Water Stability Test), all Akypo products achieve the maximum score (75 points).
They are much more stable than other anionic surfactants like Sodium or Monoethanolamine Lauryl Sulfates(SLS or MEA LS), and therefore give more stable formulations with optimal cleaning results.

-Acid Media:
Akypo products are very stable in the presence of acids. Among them, the Akypo LF types show the highest stability, being compatible even with hydrofluoricacid and oxidizing acids such as nitric acid.

-Alkaline Media:
Akypo products are more stable under high alkaline conditions than other surfactantslike Sodium Laureth Sulfate or amine oxides.
Low alkyl chain types, Akypo LF, show the highest alkaline compatibility, accepting even 20% of sodium hydroxide.

-Electroltes:
Builders and electrolytes are commonly used in hard surface cleaners to increase cleaning performance.
Akypo products allow stable formulations to be prepared containing high amounts of them.
Fine tuning is needed to choose the best Akypo option depending on the electrolyte.

COMPATIBILITY of  AKYPO PRODUCTS:
-Oxidizing Agents:
The chemical structure of Akypo products is not sensitive to oxidizing agents such as sodium hypochlorite or peroxides.
The stability of sodium hypochlorite in the presence of Akypo surfactants is comparable to that of Cocamine Oxide, a well known surfactant used as a perfume solubilizer in chlorine-based bleaches.

-Disinfectants
Anionic surfactants can form complexes with ammonium-quats, used as biocides, inhibiting their disinfecting properties.
The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Benzalkonium Chloride (BzCl) required to prevent the growth of Staphyloccocus

Aureusin the presence of a fixed quantity (500 ppm) of different added surfactants.
Typical anionic surfactants such as soap, SLS or SLES, clearly inhibit the disinfecting effect of BzCl, and it is necessary to increase the concentration of biocide to over 100 ppm.

The Akypo RLM type exhibits lower inhibition and only a concentration of between 50 and 100 ppm of BzCl is needed.
In the case of Akypo LF, there is even synergy, and less biocide is needed to prevent microorganism growth.

Akypo LF products are liquid at room temperature, highly concentrated and commercially available in acid form.
They are used singly or in combination for application in Industrial & Institutional formulations.
